Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Chicago Teachers' Union: Expecting Us to Teach Kids is Sexist and Racist
In that case, let us accept the Teachers' Union's wisdom: abolish ther jobs and send them home. Social Justce demands no less a sacrifice. ""The push to reopen schools is rooted in sexism, racism, and misogyny," the Chicago Teachers' Union tweeted."
Well, now; we can't have that. Taxpayers must forswear their imperialist / colonialist sexist /racist /misogynist tendencies and release these poor souls from their bondage of servitude. "Go Forth! You are Free! !!!" Don't know why anybody hasn't done this yet. I don't think the unions would have a leg to stand on, in court. I don't know about that.
Our courts (and Leftist politicians) seem to be as radical as the most radical radicals are. To wit: The article on transgenderism. You're assuming people still think a paycheck is tied to job performance.
Re: Did Joe Biden and the Democrats steal this year’s presidential election? Polls suggest that a great many Americans, including many Democrats, believe that they did.
Polls? What about common sense?! Common sense?? What about data?

Of course Lennon should not have been killed but I don’t morn the loss of his influence on our culture. In fact I regret a lot of the impact he had. Chuck Yeager gone, time to rewatch the Right Stuff and remember what America could do when it wanted to.
Normalizing Gender Reassignment: That ain't NORMAL.
Chicago Teachers' Union: Expecting Us to Teach Kids is Sexist and Racist: Likely misogynist, too. Well, then, you should all be fired. WaPo Discovers That School Closures Pose Significant Problems—After Relentlessly Advocating for Them: That's the WaPoo for ya! Stupid IS as stupid DOES. It’s amazing that SNL thinks Americans losing their businesses and jobs is a subject for mockery. No it isn't; it's what they do. I gave up on them in the late '70s. Victor Davis Hanson: Today's progressives have bid farewell to free expression and become Victorians. Ohhhh, they're WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse than Victorians. They're autocrats. "Did Joe Biden and the Democrats steal this year’s presidential election? Polls suggest that a great many Americans, including many Democrats, believe that they did. .." It seems...obvious. Did Biden and the Democrats steal the election. Yes and they will get away with it. Evidence now shows that they stole most of their congressional seats too. The Republican vote was so big that they were going to lose the presidential election so they had to pull out all the stops and cheat massively and openly. We all saw it and we all know it but our leaders are gutless and prefer to keep their little bit of power rather than do the right thing. Ironically even with the cheating a number of Democrat representative seats had sufficient Republican votes to beat the steal and THAT can never be allowed again. Because they got away with it this crime it will be the new normal. We have become Venezuela.
I for one am disappointed that Dylan sold his song catalog. How many advertisements will have a Dylan son as the jingle? I know it’s the way of things and it isn’t like his songs haven’t been already sold and used. We used to stomp our feet about selling out to the man.
I for one, absolutely without any conditions, do not think that these rich stuffy shirts, that meet at Davos every year, are my betters. I thought that was part of the great American exceptionalism: No one is my better. We have no royalty. What would happen if we all ganged up on them, and gave them an old fashioned tar and feathering? Make them learn their place for once. They can feel how it is like to be treated like chattel. To much like the French Revolution you say? I’m not advocating killing them, just cutting them down a peg or two. I don't care what he does with his songs any more than I care whether a stranger sells his house. It's his property. What I cannot understand is why he would bother. He has to already be wealthy beyond imagination. If he's hurting for money after all these years he must be a fool. In the article I read about Dylan's sale, David Crosby was quoted as saying he'll probaby do the same thing soon because he has a family to provide for and a mortgage to pay. What?
"...- Bob Dylan, perhaps the most influential American musician of his generation..."
Let's be TRUTHFUL here. That should read "American song-writer." Wouldn't walk across the street to listen to Bob talentlessly and badly play any of his musical instruments, even if the show was free! Hap Arlen and Yip Harburg were also terrific song-writers of their Generation, (among much stronger competition than Dylan has) but nobody would call them "MUSICIANS" by any stretch! KEEP IT REAL, here. Not long ago I was listening to a Youtube recollection by Al Stewart on his start in the music business.
He wanted to be the next Elvis and was in several rock n roll bands but he said they were really bad. He said he just he just didn't have the talent for it. But he wanted to be in music. So he looked around at the business, and noticed that "Bob Dylan was a big success though he couldn't play or sing." So he moved over to folk and made a career out of it. You can see it about the one minute mark in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL_MJlnpHRU Re: Lennon
Taken large, this was the death of the music in the death of a man in whom we’d invested much of our misplaced faith. Taken larger, it was the death of the 60s and all that we once “imagined” it might mean, might become. There was nothing wrong with Lennon's desire to see a better world. All of us want that. But Lennon and many of his contemporaries felt that "improvement" requires "destruction". They openly advocated every bad idea that they could think of. Polygamy, Drug use, Homelessness, mindless rebellion, etc. That happened because the hippies and their sympathizers never really tried to formulate a better philosophy for living. As famously expressed in the song "Revolution", a better plan isn't easy. But at least they have the manpower. https://worldstar.com/video.php?v=wshhR3y8c8WKU4el9IVh And that's the problem with the left in general. They're great at hurling abuse, but they claim that "secrecy" is a necessary component of reaching utopia. What they don't understand is just how voracious old people, and blacks, and feminists really are. Utopia will never arrive. Instead we'll get dystopia in the form of millions of freeloaders demanding money. I don't think that's what Lennon had in mind. He wanted to have perfectly clean hands; in his world everyone will be happy. Especially those sexy old people. https://www.thegrandreport.com/these-fashion-nova-ads-are-getting-out-of-control/?layout=rwd SNL has been around forever and I have never watched more 3 minutes of it at a time. Just a stilted shit stream with a laugh track.
"kwitcherbelyakin" read the sign my parents hung in the stairwell of my childhood home.
I had no idea the expertise of musical and cultural criticism that prevails here at MF. Speakin' of high culture, a sample from the bard in question: "Romeo, he said to Juliet, “You got a poor complexion It doesn’t give your appearance a very youthful touch!” Juliet said back to Romeo, “Why don’t you just shove off If it bothers you so much” Bloomberg reports China has bought 11 million tons of US corn. 1300% what they bought Pre "Trump is the bad man destroying our trade". Now we can see why Mr Biden isn't in a hurry to throw out Phase 1 deal?
A general story line is that China needs the feed because they are rebuilding their pig herds. But wait a minute. They depopulated their herds last year for Asian Swine Flu. Which should mean that they would have more of last years crop left. Doesn't add up. Read the Greenfield essay early this morning.
“The old disrupters had seen men and women on their own terms, struggling to reach their dreams, but that perspective, from the ground level of the world, had been lost to them.” Great insight. But read the whole thing. Big Tech is the demo party. I remember that dreadful evening when we heard the news of John Lennon's murder. It was snowing in KS, and the dorms emptied for a snowball fight. Couldn't seem to put my heart into it though.
I hope you will find this a bit more upbeat on the day after that anniversary, from one raised on The Beatles and British prog rock and a lot of other stuff. Not planning to quit me day job any time soon, but the pandemic has given me the incentive to record a lot of pieces written over the years, things old and new, and to finally roll some stuff onto streaming services. I'm probably the last one to the party on that front. Anyway, BD, I hope you like this piece from one of your regular readers. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mNbDC0rH7jOXUi4n3R2ijnbBnbG-T8qiQ P.S. I doubt anyone will be ready to offer me $300MM for my catalog yet, but I'd be open to starting the bidding at, say, 1/100 of that. Anyone? Re: Lennon. Still indifferent to Lennon, his story, and his music after all these years. Interesting how so many Boomers seem to have trouble saying goodbye to their adolescence (cf. also Ann Althouse and her unseemly Dylan-veneration). There's a lesson in there methinks, struggling to get out.
