Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"Yom Kippur is the only holiday I know that, because of its very nature, recognizes human weakness."
Well then, let me introduce you to pretty much every event in the Christian liturgical calendar. Just a wee dig. I really enjoy your daily links, BD. Keep up the good work.
Trump-IRS: Setting aside the authenticity and interpretation of the alleged tax returns, not to mention if they were obtained legally, could there be another explanation?
I'm not an accountant or savy about taxes. When I heard the story, my first thought was, well, what do you expect when the enterprise is invested in a longer, multi year or multi decade business cycle. Some projects, especially major commercial real estate developments or public works projects are years or decades in the making, from inception until they turn a profit and, from the get go, require enormous upfront funding. In other words the investors advance millions at the outset, for studies, permits, fees, legal services, obtaining land, obtaining financing, negotiating contracts, etc..........years before they even break ground. And even then it maybe years before they have a product to sell and then many more years before they turn a profit. Just a thought. Anyone? Sorry, left the following out.
So, of course, enterprises, of this nature, appear to be losing money and report losses for years. Property development is speculative, i.e. educated gambling. Some projects pay off big, and the myopic media accuse the developer of gouging. Other projects flop, and they accuse the developer of being a con. As you say, property devlopment is a long term proposition. Some decades, most of your projects prosper and you're on easy street. Other decades, most turn sour and you have to scramble to avoid personal bankruptcy. As a side note, Trump controlled hotel and casino businesses have declared bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009 because they couldn't pay bank debt, yet he stayed afloat through it all.
My friends are telling me that I forgot to include all the Pay to Play schemes, local, county, and state pols, city and county departments, Architecture Preservation Boards, Beautify the City Boards, environmental organizations, race hustlers, the unions,..... the mafia, but I repeat myself. Some have speculated that this is why Trump knew how sleezy government is.
Everyone is excited about the nothing-burger story on Trump's IRS tax return information.
Nobody is interested in examining the timing of out how the Opposition Media got hold of this information just before the election, and a short time after the Opposition Southern District of New York got a judge to agree with granting them access to Trump's info, and Nobody is even doing the basic work that would connect the information from the NYT's 'Anonymous' source to the information provided to the SDNY by the IRS. That in itself - disinterest in a serious, politically-targeted felony offense - tells you all you need to know about the sad quality of journalism, even Conservative journalism, that exists in the marketplace, or the extent of its congenital bias. As an aside: The Gateway Pundit is becoming the National Enquirer of conservative journalism. Since when has a piece of US mail ever taken nine days to reach its destination? The 1930s?
I sent a check to pay a bill last Nov. They called when it was overdue, I told them I sent it but would send it again. They were OK with that and agreed to shred my other check if it arrived. It did arrive; in April. My guess is that my letter dropped into an outside collection box froze to the side of the post box and didn't get picked up until the thaw. I now post them inside the post office.
Maybe by airmail or cross country but I think back then you could get a letter in the morning mail and send a response in the afternoon mail. (this was in the city). For 2 cents
As late as 1964, my grandfather could walk down to the station in New London, Conn. (as we abbreviated it in those days), post a letter on the working RPO car in the morning mail train, and I would get it the next day, in suburbab St. Louis, Mo., in the afternoon Forst Class delivery. After that, they went to air mail, Zip Codes, two letter state codes, &c., and we quickly went from two-day to four-day delivery. It was the last time I saw the Post Office do anyting quickly. The results were worse the further you got from a major airport.
Just got my 2020-2021 college calendar. I had asked where it was and they said all the calendars had been mailed out the beginning of August.
re Chaotic Scene Unfolds As Car Plows Through Trump Supporters In California, Multiple Injuries Reported; Driver Arrested
Dopes No. Villains. Trump taxes? My taxes? Your taxes?
Tell them to read the 4th Amendment. Could the Sahara ever be green again? I recall reading a few years ago that letting cattle, goats, camels, etc gradually encroach on a desert has good results ONLY if you graze large numbers of such animals in small spaces and allow them to crap all over a smallish area, then by their sheer numbers, mix that natural micro-enviroment-enhancing manure into the soil, to have its effects! The "Brown Revolution" process runs counter to almost every "range management" hypothesis propounded by the so-called experts, EXCEPT IT SEEMS TO WORK! A few decades ago, the United Nations hit upon the brilliant idea of developing the Sub-Saharan desert areas by providing the populations there with goats.
A friend of mine at Texas A&M was providing consultancy input to the UN at the time and told them to get rid of the damn goats - they were eating all the vegetation on desert fringes and the desert was expanding. 'National Geographic Studies of the Socially Downtrodden and Oppressed' covered this story too, thrilling and ominous reporting on the plight of the desert nomads - that was before the commercial development of the "runaway climate change" industry took over. I guess the story line has now shifted. Are these same imbeciles going to start claiming credit for saving mankind when they start to realize that the climate change they are seeing is normal and higher CO2 levels means greater extent of plant life and better growing conditions? The clue to the "real story" here is "Could the Sahara ever be green again?"
The world goes through cycles, this is proof. Of course it will be green again, and desert again, and green again... And just as certain North America will have an ice age again. With regard to Trump choosing Amy Coney Barrett as his appointee: Nice CONSERVATIVE C A T H O L I C FEMALE--THE PERFECT response to Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech papers! YEAH :-) !!
Question: How will Pelosi push the assault on this nominee and maintain her good standing with the Pope? EPIC! President Trump Dancing to Village People After Pennsylvania Rally is a HUGE HIT! (Video): He's having fun. Dems are having stomach acid.
I am a neanderthal in some ways. I use the internet, I like the internet but I am simply unaware, sometimes, about some things on the internet. Take Amazon Prime for example: I have looked at that information about it and the coming "prime day" and I just don't see the value to it. I have bought things on Amazon, perhaps a year or two ago. I do have a password to Amazon but couldn't tell you what it is since I haven't signed in a a year or two or three. I simply do not understand what value "prime" would be to me. One thing is free shipping; so I pay $120 a year to belong and every other year I 'might' buy something and they ship it for free. My memory on this is last time I bought something from them the shipping was free anyway. But, note to Amazon; I consider the price of shipping when I buy something and if the shipping and cost is to high I don't buy it. So don't try to tell me paying for prime will save me something because I won't buy it anyway if the combined price is higher than I like.
As for prime day my first thought is if I were going to buy something I would absolutely not buy on that day or within a week of that day. It is like shopping on black friday. Also I think some people shop as a hobby. For example there is a sale so they go shopping. I only shop when I want something. I don't really care what the price is, by that I mean if the price is good I will buy it and if it isn't I will do without. But if tomorrow Amazon or Walmart said anything I buy is half price I doubt between now and then I could think of anything I need. That's okay, Saul. If you don't see the value of something like Amazon Prime then I don't blame you for not subscribing. Others may differ and will subscribe. It's called capitalism.
I used to feel like you and didn't buy on Amazon very much as most delivery trucks couldn't get to our house without wrecking the trees along the driveway. About a year ago we moved to a more rural community with an easily derivable driveway. There are fewer stores out in the county so Amazon has helped a lot. Prime reduces or eliminates the cost of much shipping. It does make us mad to make Jeff Bezos richer but it saves us a 40 minute one way drive to get to more stores. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have prime.
I never buy clothes online because I have to try them on. I have looked at food online but it is very expensive. I do buy gasoline, but I don't think Amazon will ship it to me. I bought some tires last week but not sure Amazon would install them. Other than that I haven't bought anything for months to years.
I do know that there are some people who buy whatever the TV is selling but I kind of assumed that most adults are like myself and do not buy lots of 'stuff'. I did get a 'new' cell phone about 6 years ago but it was free. ATT made me turn in my old cell phone that I had owned for about 8 years because it would no longer work after the changes they planned for the network. I bought a TV about 10 years ago and it still works so I don't need one. What do people buy that makes Prime such a good deal??? Minnesota voter fraud. Import Somalians, get Somalia. The surprising thing is that anyone finds it surprising. Somalia isn't the open sewer of Africa for nothing.
JWM Back in the 60's Ted Kennedy got a bill passed that opened up immigration. The purpose was to flood the country with people who would be dependent and make them Democrats by giving them all welfare. This was all done by intent. It is working as planned. If you, (anyone objecting to this) ever voted Democrat since the 60's then you have no excuse.
Re: Stolen election in North Carolina
We were told that Biden already had hundreds of lawyers lined up to challenge the election, is it any surprise that the lawyers aren't waiting until the election to get started? The only sad part of this is that, once again, the GOP is caught flat-footed and only reacts to what the Democrats are doing, they never seem to anticipate and get out in front of this stuff. Barrett's bio is whatever the media say it is. If the NYT reported that she was 98 years old, I could point to people who would try to find out who does her makeup.
