We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The Forest Fire story is interesting. Often man's folly takes the lead on these conflagrations when it comes to stupid mistakes and pyromaniacs . What wasn't mentioned is that the high-intensity fires due to fuel loading have an insidious long-term effect.
The ultra-high temperatures not only kill mature trees that will often survive a low-intensity (natural) fire, they also serve to sterilize the soil, killing off microbes, insects, and viable seeds that are invigorated by natural fires and quickly re-emerge.
The result is a barren landscape that subsequently becomes further impaired by erosion once precipitation returns. With the mature soils stripped away, re-growth becomes limited even more; a downward spiral toward a new equilibrium.
It's another case of man's Unintended Consequences whose detrimental effects far outweigh and far outlast any short-term benefit. We'll be reaping the rewards for decades for a decades-old failed policy, and it will cost us pristine old-growth wilderness. But heaven forbid we change the policy.
And yet they're blaming the fires on global warming, global warming that they intend to undo because managing the global climate is child's play to these super-smart, super-capable geniuses. Think about that - these geniuses can't even control a simple forest and their half-witted attempt to do so has been a disaster, yet this deters them not the least from their faith that they can control the global climate. What sort of hubris and lack of self-reflection, what sort of massive ego must you have to believe such a thing?
By the way, nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize are essentially meaningless, and not only because the prize itself has been greatly devalued by political considerations.
Basically, we could get together and form the Maggie's Farm Center for World Peace, Understanding, and a good Cup of Coffee and then start submitting nominations to the Nobel committee.

Let's face it! Joy Behar needs to get her sorry tail out of the public spotlight. Her officious mouth borders on sedition, which would bother me normally as I don't watch such drama, but my liberal neighbors scream her quotes over fences at every opportunity. Ruins gardening on a lovely day.
Atlantic can't control itself...Billionaire media is there to promote billionaire "needs". Doesn't matter if it's Jobs/Atlantic, Zuckerberg/Facebook, Washington Post, or NYTimes. It's their personal space to hire like minds to promote their personal message. It's a puppeteer shop.
With regard to timber management. To date we have a stand off--the environmentalists "let it all burn naturally", and the Timber Companies "we have to clean cut in order to make a profit". Both positions are selfish, narrow, reflect poor design abilities and a refusal to try to see a better way forward. NOW, and of course, we have the firefighter's union. Yep, we really needed that to add to the fire!
RE: "Woke Oscars" - The Oscars stopped meaning anything somewhere in the mid-1990s. The moral posturing, symbolic ribbons, political lectures by the winners, crass emcees and so on ended it for me. We went from tuxes and long gowns to an emcee on stage in his underwear.
