Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Silent Majority: Over 10% Of Trump Voters Won't Admit Preferences To Pollsters
More and more, folks are realizing the only way to win at a rigged game is to not play. My general reply to pollsters is "no thanks." If they're insistent, it's "go impregnate yourself." re the mask picture
They forgot to add the final graphic. Covid-19 carrier/BLM protestor without mask and BLM protestor without mask. Contagion Probability 0%. It is a shared fiction. It provides an excuse or way out of the lockdown. It provides release from liability if you have a public venue and you require masks and social distancing then you did all that you legally could, right? It does not matter that it is not scientific. It does not matter that the manufacturers of these masks state that they do not protect you from infection. Never mind that scientists and doctors have said that they do not protect you. This now has a life of it's own, it is no longer about safety it is about "do what you are told or else". OR "look how good I am I'm wearing a mask and if you don't wear one I will throw my hot coffee on you".
re: mask poster at First Republic Bank.
They only show Covid Carriers who are currently infectious, they don't show recovered covid survivors, who have tested negative (aready healthy again) and positive for antibodies (can't get sick again). They only show a prospective victim who we assume hasn't been sick, and therefore wouldn't be immune. If both parties in the bank's poster above were previously sick, recovered (negative for virus, positive for antibodies), then there is no reason for either of them to wear a mask. Unless they're robbing that bank. Where is the 30% false positive chart.
Where is the 50% of the people don't even know they might have it. Where is the warning on the mask box that says masks don't stop/prevent COVID or other viruses? Where is the chart with people who wear masks getting sick from breathing their own air for extended periods? I just want to see the chart that says - wash your hands. Re: New York Times panic button
I don't like to brag but I beat you to it. I love listening to America's many regional accents, but those "scholars" who are arguing that "white English" (??) is racist and should be overturned in favor of black ghetto speech are so full of bovine excrement, I don't even know where to start. I know a woman with Japanese heritage who was born and raised in Mississippi, and her accent is pure Southern. Is she supposed to change that to satisfy some demand for racial division?
I believe to intent of black and brown shirt tactics has zero to do with "win(ning) friends and influenc(ing) people. It's about "hand over your lunch money, or else."
The police Chief of Kenosha remarked on TV that Kyle Rittenhouse used his weapon improperly and ineffectively. He said much more too in an attempt to bias the jury pool. But I would argue that Kyle was not only very accurate and effective killing two of his attackers and injuring on and harming no one else. FAR more effective than the Kenosha police were in protecting their own citizens. The police chief should just shut up and hang his head in shame. Where was he and his police these last four days as his citizens went through hell?
Contrary to the early reports each of the men who attacked Kyle had a weapon and each of them physically attacked him before Kyle defended himself. When this all occurred Kyle was trying to get away from his attackers who chased him down and attacked him on the ground. Also, not surprisingly, each of his attackers were criminals who were in Kenosha to commit more crimes, they weren't there to further social justice. No doubt Kyle will be offered up as a martyr to die in prison, probably at the hands of a black prison gang. Kyle will not get justice he will get the Michael Flynn treatment. Kyle's life is over, his life doesn't matter. Syracuse professor put on leave, under investigation for using term ‘Wuhan Flu’: IDJITS!!!1111!!!!!!
Now, as protests and riots continue to grip cities, she argues that looting is a powerful tool to bring about real, lasting change in society. The rioters who smash windows and take items from stores, she says, are engaging in a powerful tactic that questions the justice of "law and order," and the distribution of property and wealth in an unequal society. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. Looters, THIS is your next target! National Media Ignores Two Black Lives Matter Inspired Hate Crime Stabbings Against White Men… in ONE DAY: The "Media" hates us for not being Democrats. ‘Black linguistic justice’: Professors demand end to standard English as the norm: I didn't understand what you said. Would you please speak more clearly? Trump goes scorched earth in RNC 2020 acceptance speech: Goodwin: As well he should! The NY Times Hits the Panic Button: As well it should. Panic leads to doing stupid things. The NYT is primed and ready to do them. Today on Althouse, there is a thread written by the host of a party. He noticed one of his guests was photographing a flag he had in his living room. When he inquired as to what was going on, it turns out that the guest was planning to denounce him for displaying a Confederate flag. Except, oops, it wasn't the Stars and Bars, it was a Union Jack, not that this should matter. I found this story depressing, because up til now I hoped America was smarter than that. But, don't get cocky, there are a bunch of very stupid people in our population. In the mean time, I'm hoping and praying this ignorant woman is not a teacher. I've noticed that teachers and social workers are well represented among the "protestors".
They've also gone after the flag of Norway, if that makes you feel any better.
RE: "In Defense of Looting“:
Do any of these people ever think about the implications of their ideas? I mean, at all? Suppose, for the sake of argument, that Ms. Osterweil is correct that things like jobs, property, business, police, the legal system, etc., were all tools of state oppression; and that rejecting all of that by forceful mob action means that both a) you get stuff for free now, and b) the end of state oppression. (I know. Ridiculous. But let's entertain her fantasy for a minute here.) If all that is true, and the broader society accepts it as such, how well do you suppose a minority population will fare under such circumstances? Should our society as a whole become convinced that the laws and "property" are illegitimate concepts, and that we are entitled to whatever we can take, her concept of "oppression" would suddenly seem very quaint. (Something she would already know if she hadn't slept through her high school civics class on the day they discussed Hobbes.) There is a reason the civilized world declared that acts of piracy made one an "enemy of all mankind." I'm having a little problem with the probability calculation in that pro-mask graphic. If one protective strategy produces an infection chance of 70% and the other an infection chance of 5%, that means the combined chance is .70 x .05, or 3.5%, not 1.5%.
But as long as we're just making the numbers up anyway, who cares? Small print at the bottom: "* Contagion probabilities are estimated percentages to promote protection." In other words, we made them up to inspire a behavior we want. If a healthcare worker with a mask had a 70% chance of catching COVID from a patient without a mask, we'd have a much bigger problem in hospitals than we do. On the flip side, if putting a mask on the patient (but not the healthcare worker) really produces only a 5% chance of infection, then I really want to know how big the realistic risk was without a mask--100%? 50%? 7%? Is the mask really doing anything, or just serving largely as a symbol? The more we act like we can make the numbers up, the more people will assume it's just a symbol. My own propaganda poster, if freed from the constraints of evidence, would estimate 25% contagion if the healthy person wears the mask and 10% if the sick person wears the mask, which would make the two-mask option a nice round 2.5% risk. If it's important to reach 1.5% for some reason, then make it 30% and 5%. I would still studiously avoid addressing the baseline risk of the no-mask-on-either-person option, because that just encourages people to start thinking about costs, efficacy, and trade-offs, and that leads to no end of trouble. No one has ever tested the probability of getting Covid-19 while wearing a mask. What they are actually talking about is estimates of how much sputum or other contaminated body fluid will be trapped by a mask. I question their numbers, I believe that they are only correct for large droplets and totally inaccurate for small droplets. BUT understand that it is NOT about the probability of transmission of the disease it is ONLY about how much body fluid passes in either direction.
That calculation means diddly squat. What you want to know is will I catch Covid-19 while wearing a mask if even 0.001% of infected body fluid passes through or around the mask? The answer is YES. This means that even if the mask where as effective as they claim in reducing intake of infected particles you are still at 100% risk of getting the disease. How so, you ask? Because about a million Covid-19 virus can sit on the point of a pin. AND you need on average 7-15 virus to catch Covid-19. So unless the mask is certified to stop 100% of all viruses it does not work! If the mask is tremendously and wonderfully successful and could stop 99.9% of all viruses you would still catch Covid-19 while wearing the mask. The masks do not work!!! And the experts know this. "Virginia's Senate Votes In Favor Of Reduced Penalties For Assaulting Police"--and in other news, Virginia ex-policemen flood rural Texas communities looking for jobs.
Which reminds me of a joke I saw yesterday: Virginia is the mother of Texas. We're not sure who the father was, but we think it might have been Tennessee. "Image: Not sure there is any solid data behind it, but whatever"
That sounds exactly like my governor and his Disease Commissar. "We're reducing restaurant capacity from 50% to 25%" "What's the scientific data supporting your new edict?" "We just thought it would be better" Black linguistic justice has a grain of truth, an academic point, namely that the rules of black English are just as strict as the rules of standard English. A native speaker of one trying the other will be found out in a few seconds.
Nevertheless, if you speak black English you'll be immediately viewed as uneducated and stupid until proven otherwise, which is not a great start. Also, there being so much written in standard English, you might like to be able to understand it. The profs can end the use of standard English in school, but people will still judge you for being incompetent if you are not coherent. Ads with mistakes make your company a laughing stock. Sure, go ahead, try to stop the memes.
