Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

From an engineering perspective, it seems to me that a mail-in only election is capable of measuring a difference in preference around 3%. In hard Blue or Hard Red states, this may not matter. However in purple states, where the difference can be far less than this, it is not suitable.
Does the "engineering perspective" include dishonesty in counting the ballots? Or Post Office incompetence?
As past examples have shown, mail-in balloting is too badly subject to fraud to be used in any election where it amounts to more than a tiny fraction of all ballots voted. That is, mail-in ballots need to be few enough that they are down in the noise for the election as a whole. What I'm saying is that even if you assume that none of that is happening, the methodological issues are enough that the measurement can't be resolved
You can't measure the width of a human hair with a tape measure; you can't measure a 0.5% preference spread with a mail-in election. re Evidence Mounts That Mail-In Voting Will Bring Only Fraud And Chaos
My dart board guess is that 35% of the electorate will be seething with rage after the votes are counted in November. Both sides are going to accuse the other of cheating. The $64 question is, what happens after that? Here is what Trump should do: Set up a commission to review all mail in ballots. Every letter sent through the mail is photographed front and back and some specific data is captured along with that (such as where mailed and when). The mail in ballots have the signature of the voter on the back. Using computers run a series of programs that would identify potential fraud and then track it down and prosecute.
"Re: Champaign Losing its Fizz"
France can sell as much Champaign as it wants. The only issue is price. Did you notice that there was no mention of that in the article? France wants to sell Champaign for twenty dollars a bottle (or more) but the market will only pay ten dollars a bottle. So French farmers are now appealing to the French government for price supports. That's what farmers do when they aren't making as much money as they want. They try to steal money from the taxpayer. French farmers can make plenty of money selling Champaign, even at ten dollars a bottle. So they don't need to be "rescued" by French taxpayers. They simply need to adjust to the new prices. And just so you know, American farmers used to make millions of bottles of Champaign from apples. But they called it "Fizzy Apple Wine". It's indistinguishable from French Champaign. NAPA farmers could sell millions of bottles of American Festival Wine. But Washington D.C. doesn't want American farmers to do that, because French Champaign is part of a trade deal. We buy French Champaign, and in return, France enforces American Intellectual Property laws. If Biden gets to chose, that just may happen. As long as Joe gets to sniff someone's hair, he won't care.
Joe sniff hair, and he don't care Joe sniff hair, and he don't care Joe sniff hair, and he don't care Dementia gets its waaaay. A couple years ago I had a bumper crop of apples and pears. Not being able to eat all of them, I made a batch of apple-pear wine. It came out surprisingly tasty and, yes, it was "fuzzy". I'm glad I saved the recipe.
Yes, a price reduction would be attractive to me too.
However, it's the process that makes champagne more expensive than other wines. And therein lies the rub for producers. Beyond the outrageously overpriced cachet brands the rap artists and Hollywood types love, the vast amount of bubbly, though not cheap, can't be sold at too reduced a price without quickly becoming too unprofitable to continue producing. Maybe the French should drop the price of champagne to meet demand. I'll buy it for the right price.
Regarding election fraud, we already have early voting, at least in Texas. People normally have at least a week, and in Texas this year there will be 2 weeks +, Oct 13th - 30th.
Purple dye, paper ballots. This is what countries use when they want to minimize fraud. This coupled with copious early voting windows is the answer to any argument that it's too dangerous to go out in public and vote. Tweaks could include real-time apps to show how busy the polls are at a given hour. Absentee ballots should be limited to the house-bound or health challenged, or not present - just like it has always been. Check you county and have this conversation with those around you - get people informed! Mail-in voting on a large scale will guarantee chaos and fraud to a degree that we will be locked in turmoil trying to figure out who one. One side wants this. Now is the time for action. When I lived in Cali for decades, I regularly applied and used an absentee ballot, because it allowed me time to study the candidates and referenda. It' was a matter of convenience. Then i started receiving two or three ballots. I complained but none cared.
Re: "Columbia hosts 'deconstructing whiteness' workshop for 'white-identified students'"
Who's responsible for identifying them as "white"? Do they have to wear special badges once they've been identified? Are you identified as white if you are 100% white, or if you have any percentage of white blood in you? |
