Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re With murders up nearly 80% in Chicago last month, Lori Lightfoot blames guns
This has been her standard excuse for the gun violence for some time. According to her, the Chicago gun control laws don't work because the gun control laws in surrounding jurisdictions are more lax. One wonders what her excuse is for the illegal drug trade in Chicago? Is it because the laws in surrounding jurisdictions are more lax? It's obviously an excuse made by a politician that wants to shift blame as she has no clue or desire to address the problem at hand, Well, EVERYONE KNOWS that pistols and rifles have psychic powers that DEMAND and FORCE people to pull their triggers.

A thought occurred to me yesterday when looking for testing sites locally (waco). Our local sites test only by Dr's referral and by appointment only.
That suggests that the testing is for suspected infections in a person or a close contact. That means the testing is not random sampling. That referral would tend to increase positives as the population being tested are suspected of infection. That skews the application of the positive numbers to the general population. Another reason to dis-trust the "Cases of infection" numbers. The dark forces of marxist politics, must have enough new infections so as to support their desire for another shutdown. A bad economy, is the best hope for defeating Trump. The race wars don’t seem to be pulling enough people to their side. Mail in ballots are the third prong of the attack. These people will stop at nothing to gain power. Nothing.

I'd like to see some statistically rigorous random sampling, too. In my Texas county, the state did a two-day drive-up test, but there were protocols to meet before anyone was admitted, so it wasn't random. Since then, they've cancelled a scheduled test and apparently are concentrating on providing test supplies to hot spots like nursing homes, or first responders who need frequent re-testing. Not that these are bad ideas, but it means we don't have information about the population at large. I read some weeks back that it was possible to get a recent read on a population by examining municipal sewage.
I'm assuming you didn't mean that last sentence as a joke, but the innuendo is strong in that one! My imagination runs wild at the possibilities.

Charlie Daniels has passed away. Stroke at 83.
Here is his song, What the Country Needs is a Few More Rednecks. The reference to Gorbachev dates the song but the rest of the lyrics are very relevant for today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c63DSPuH2Zs Of course the covid-19 numbers are up. This is what infectious diseases do. They will stop going up once we achieve herd immunity. This will happen with or without lockdowns and mask mandates. There is no other possibility. All of those countries or states and cities basking in the glow of low numbers simply haven't been hit hard yet, they will be. Everything else said about covid-19 is politics and foolishness.
Every person I see on TV or the internet demanding that we all wear masks all the time do so while not wearing a mask. The irony lost on them.
Something that's getting overlooked is that the incentives around getting tested have changed. Initially, during the lockdown period, a positive test meant two weeks isolation, while there was no real downside to not being tested for an asymptomatic case. Now in several industries in order to return to work you need to document negative tests. So the incentive for especially young people shifted from avoid getting tested if you're not sure to get tested if you're not sure.
For those of you interested in higher education, please consider the relationship between Nevada (Arizona) money and the school loan business. Is it possible that much of today's higher education has been built by funds from the gaming industry?
What other segment of the economy has enough free flowing cash to fund the school loan industry? For every student and every university. A secondary footnote to remember is this: it was the older Nevada syndicate that build up Arizona and thus ASU. Re: Student Calls Police
What people need to understand about “cancel culture” is that moral indignation in response to a “heinous assertion” is only to be expected. After all, how can anyone stand still in the face of evil? This argument relieves the left of having to deal in specifics. “Indignation” is an impossible to define emotion, which can only be felt by morally superior people, therefore the act of being indignant, in itself, is proof of moral superiority. The mite indignant a person becomes, the stronger his claim to moral superiority. And he doesn’t have to engage in rational debate, because he’s too scandalized to converse. Anyone who disagrees with hm is beyond the pale. You gotta admit the police did a pretty good job of explaing the Facts of Life with Wokey McWokeface. It would have been better if they had been a little less laid-back and a little more stern about wasting their time, though.

True. BTW: it is "barque" not "bark". I sailed one (as a cadet) transatlantic, twice.
Got this story from my Granny. She, as a young woman, was busy in the house when her mother came in and said "Doll, we must kneel down and pray". Great-grandmother had sensed something was wrong with one of her sons abroad and this was her response. Granny did as she was bid, and recorded the incident in her diary.
Many months later, a brother returned from an overseas voyage. Granny and brother greeted each other, and then one of them asked if anything odd had happened. Think it was the bro as in my memory of the story my Granny recounted their mother's insistence on praying instantly. Bro responded that, as his ship was rounding the tip of South America, he was swept overboard. He called out to his mother, and the next wave swept him back onboard. The diary was consulted; it was determined the call and the prayer were at the same time. Many years later, Granny was busy reading tea leaves for my mother and my aunt. She'd apparently gained a bit of a reputation for the same during the war but this was much further on. She looked at my mother's cup and said "You will hear of a death." At that point, the phone rang and Mother answered it. The call was to advise her of the death of a pupil (she was a teacher in a rural area further north) who had died rather quickly from blood poisoning. Granny never read tea leaves again. We have lost so much in the panicdemic. The biggest loss has been the blind acceptance of the idea of chosen essential services. Not to go all Austrian School; but what makes our country work is all the individual actors choosing how each wants to earn money and spend the same money. What makes Cuba, USSR etc miserable is the lack of above. This line has never been fought for.
