Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I also thought the charges regarding Floyd's death were off base. Full disclosure, I have been avoiding media coverage of the Floyd death and rioting, so I fully acknowledge that I may not have all the facts. To be clear, negligence is obvious, intent not so much. It was my understanding that the cause of death included compression asphyxiations due to the pressure on the back exerted by another officer, Alexander Keung. I got nothing against Officer Keung, who by all accounts seems to be an upstanding individual, who was still a rookie until recently. But, why the differential in charges between officers Chauvin and Keung?
I half-suspect Brother Ellison will overcharge them in order to fail to get a conviction and spark another round of riots.
Agree. Overcharge leading to acquittal = rioting. Conviction leads to victory riots (sports, q.v.); and assertion that the "toxic police" parrots were right, leading to more demands leading to unmet demand riots. One big target is the election.
Hadn't thought of victory riots. You may well have a point.
I can't wait to see how Foghorn Leghorn and Dog settle their differences in this brave new cartoon world.
...and I guess it's fair to bet that Foghorn Leghorn won't be singing "Camptown Ladies" anymore, either.
re Elmer Fudd will not have a gun in 'Looney Tunes' reboot
QUOTE: “But we can do cartoony violence — TNT, the Acme stuff. All that was kind of grandfathered in,” Browngardt told the outlet. Elmer Fudd is regularly foiled trying to hunt Bugs Bunny on the show. In the new series, the character will carry a scythe. WTF??? TNT is okay but guns are not? "Cartooney violence is kind of grandfathered in", as long as it is NOT guns? Their logic, or lack of it, is mind boggling. I don't know why anyone bothers to watch this stuff. The cartoons are not the same without Mel Blanc and directors like Chuck Jones. They've lost their charm. This would be the third or fourth attempt to reboot these characters in some form acceptable to the cultural elites. All the previous attempts were insipid, and this one seems bent on being all the more so.
I've often told people that everything I needed to know in life I learned from Looney Tunes. I credit them for instilling in me a healthy skepticism and a recognition of stealthy cynicism at a very early age. I look forward to the bootleg market for the originals. They certainly have helped me keep my perspective in this current madness. Re: Minneapolis City Council President: If You Call the Cops When Your Garage is Broken Into, You're a White Supremacist
This is a really good time for some enterprising black man to pick up some nice stuff from the Minneapolis City Council President's garage. Re: Minnesota AG Keith Ellison May Have Just Screwed Up Case Against George Floyd Cops
I suspect it is virtually impossible for Ellison to screw up his case against Floyd. Where are they going to find twelve people who don't believe that if Floyd isn't convicted, there won't be worse riots much less consider the "intricacies" of the law? And who on the jury would feel safe voting to acquit? The other three officers could possibly be let off because they couldn't have assisted in an accident, but I wouldn't put money on that either. They could have been on the moon at the time of George Floyd's death and they still would be convicted. All that remains is the executions.
It occurred to me that another way of saying what I said, and emphasizing what you said is that what all of the rioters and probably most of the actually peaceful protesters want is a lynching and have very little interest in justice.
It's a bit of hilarity that the AG that is prosecuting this case is the same one that beat the crap out of his girlfriend. Some lives matter...some are ignored...some are crap.
Hey Dad--Is your daughter a trained "Agent of Change"?
Maybe you should have developed some back bone when she was coming home spouting all the feminist explanations for how a better world would look. Or, maybe you should just have had the backbone to not let her get away with everything when she was growing up just because "she's daddy's little girl". Because today she is out there doing the bidding of her local "handlers"--the women who have MA degrees in community organizing. Do a Google search like this: "masters degree in community organizing". Gentlemen: I propose that you were a fool then and are a coward now if you do not confront her. You are the best person to try to have a conversation with her about her value system. The Question of Race in Campus Sexual-Assault Cases. Is the system biased against men of color? It's The ATLANTIC. I gave up on it some years ago.

My 80 year old, MS, wheel chair bound Marine father, told me yesterday he wants an M79, like what he used in Nam. He is pretty pissed off. I'm right there with him. People calling for the disbanding of police, have no idea what they are asking for.
Hundreds of millions in damages to government infrastructure and businesses, with dozens injured and a few dead. Have we seen an honest estimate of the damage totals? Have we seen a single Democrat politician denounce the violence, destruction, and looting and call out the miscreants?
Police, mayors, military peacekeepers on their knees, or washing the feet of militants, or prostrating themselves for the crowd - abasing themselves out of some inchoate form of shame or guilt they don’t understand and could not describe, imposed by others; all looking for absolution from the mob. The images are jarring in their wrongness. Who can imagine themselves turning to authority figures such as these, when the sworn power of their position is needed to assure the safety and well-being of their citizens? Would you call this police chief if your daughter was carjacked or worse, expecting resolution? Would you trust this mayor and city council with the civic planning for the next 25 years in your city’s future? Here we find ourselves, almost 70 years after the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement where ideas and peaceful demonstration won out and changed our modern society for the better. Here we find ourselves 100 years after the worst spate of mob-driven, race-based lynchings in our nation’s history, lynchings that took place in almost every region of the country. And what do we have? What difference is there between the mobs then and today - is it a piece of rope and a singled-out victim? Or is it the support, with even greater enthusiasm from the selfsame Democratic party. Someone is trying very, very hard to destabilize our country in the run-up to a national election. NO BAILOUTS!!!
Minneapolis defunding police. I'm fine with Minneapolis being a real time experiment. That said, apparently I'm a mercenary person, my first thought is that Minneapolis will experience middle class flight, empty commercial and residential properties, a decline in tourism, a decline in business revenues, a decline in tax revenues, and increasing costs. I'm curious to see what property insurers would do, mass cancellation of policies or jack up rates on suburbanites. Complete agreement on your 2nd paragraph. And not just empty commercial and residential properties, but lower valuations on the occupied ones, too. I would expect every homeowner willt see a hit on their equity just by living near Minneapolis if this idiocy moves forward. Some may go underwater.
Are there no brakes on this train?! To take anything from my garage you would have to enter through the house. I put a pad lock on the track and unplug the door opener. I even live in a safe neighborhood and do this anyway. Open Garages are too much opportunity for a thief.
Review of Woody Allen's new movie: stay home, get your favorite pizza and soft drink, watch the original Ghostbusters again. Just like every other Woody Allen movie.
Movies are supposed to be entertaining. Not about the secret to happiness, or obtaining inner peace, or finding a philosophy of living, or whatever. Those things may happen but that's not the point. It's entertainment; it holds my interest, it moves, the plot devices are not too outrageous, it holds together. Anything else is secondary. re: both epidemics
You can persuade people with logic, but it is much easier to manipulate them with passion and feelings. The fact that the number of black males killed by police is noise in the data of total homicides of black males when you can turn it around to even one is intolerable. To me it's just classic deflection/projection strategy: none of your problems are of your own making; none of your problems can be solved without us. ''none of your problems are of your own making; none of your problems can be solved without us.''
A quote to be remembered! Fifty year old white liberal here. Lifelong Democrat, etc. etc. I live in a liberal bubble.
In the last week, almost everyone I know has started to talk about getting a gun...including my husband. We're going to go to the gun range next week to try out some different models. Never thought I'd see the day. |
