We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I am happy for their presumed success and concerned that they celebrate too soon. Eventually this virus will get to every part of the country and the world. It will take it's 0.1% toll in deaths (maybe 0.5%, maybe 0.05%, no matter what number we want it to be it will choose). Florida and Georgia will see more deaths and LA and Dallas and every pother big, medium and small city too. Wait 12-18 months to celebrate and to evaluate this disease.
The trick for Georgia and Florida (and the rest of the country) is to have the guts to hold the course when the second wave hits. There really is no going back but the political and social price may be quite high.
I know and I sympathize but science and math is tough. We don't set the number (percentage) of deaths from this virus it does. Sure we can mitigate around the edges or even do stupid stuff like the NY governor did to make it worse. But in the end whatever that number is will be determined by nature and the virus itself.
Those who have an agenda to push will try to manipulate that number; more tests mean that number becomes smaller as we discover more people have the virus, whoop, whoop! But none of that changes the fact that people died which is what the fairy tale writers of this story would like you to ignore. Today the death toll in the U.S. is flirting with 89,000 and even the MSM has had to admit that by May 1st we will top 100,000. All of those people who previously claimed this was no worse than the common flu are now being treated for depression. But no worries the new anti-factual meme is "well a lot of those deaths were not from covid-19". blithefully ignoring the fact that many deaths from covid-19 were not attributed to it. Right now there is a lot of confusion. Which is why I keep saying we need to wait 12-18 months to better understand how bad this virus will be.
In a odd irony you are in favor of opening up the country and resent my repeated warnings about a rising death toll. But I too am in favor of opening up the country and my message is because there will be a second wave and a rising death toll we need to anticipate it not deny it so that when it happens we don't revert to our shutdown mode. You seem to be unaware of that risk OR simply see that everyone who does not agree with you must be attacked. So be it. Attack away. But it won't change the facts.
