We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Experts predict 70-90,000 sucides in the US due to economic disasters, crushed dreams. Hope that is not true, but I no longer believe anything, especially from experts. Wrong about everything thus far.
The speed of an economic recovery is the $10 trillion question.
The politicians and the naive think the economy can be brought back to full speed with the flick of a switch. However, the economic machine is complex and a lot of the cogs in that machine are now broken.
We could be looking at years before we reach the level our economy was at 4 months ago. If that happens we could be dealing with a high percentage of unemployment for a long time. That surely means higher deficits and more printed money.
How many more trillions can we print without disastrous consequences?
If you figure 326.2 million people in the U.S. and expected lifetime of 80 years:
In the 2 months we have been in lockdown the U.S. has lost about 670,000 lifetimes to being locked away in our houses. Every day that lockdown continues we lose about 11,000 lifetimes
Fortunately the NY City police are dealing effectively with all this constitutional rights bullshit:
I did not know you were required to wear a mask in NY City. I did not know that there is a "right" way to wear it and all other ways of wearing it will get you thrown to the ground and handcuffed.
When I see something like this I truly do not understand the police who are involved. Are they proud? Do they embrace this anti-constitutional action? Could they not have figured out some other way to deal with this?
The governor should read the Texas Supreme Court opinion in
RE SALON A LA MODE, ET AL.
"The Constitution is not suspended when the government
declares a state of disaster.” In re Abbott, No. 20-0291, 2020
WL 1943226, at *1 (Tex. Apr. 23, 2020). All government
power in this country, no matter how well-intentioned, derives
only from the state and federal constitutions. Government
power cannot be exercised in conflict with these constitutions,
even in a pandemic."
