We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
That's what you call "Rode hard and put up wet." His voice was still fairly strong compared to how weak Leon Russell's voice was at the end of his career for example.
He was an American original, a classic musician who skirted the worlds of church, country, addiction, outlaw, etc. Some of the songs on the American recordings he did with Rick Rubin producing were classics:
His rendition of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" was amazing as well as "Desperado" , "Like a Soldier" off the first American recording is the best recovery song I've ever heard. The Vietnam song "Drive On " is classic. I think my favorite Cash song ever is a little song called "Country Trash" about hardscrabble living in Kentucky or Tennessee
Following him, the man, one noticed that after June died there was a steep decline, he went into a wheelchair almost immediately after her passing, and he died something like a year later (going from memory, if it was not a year, I stand corrected). After her death, it was over for him. Their relationship is a true love story in and of itself.
