We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Unable to chase Trump from office through Russia, Russia, Russia; impeachment; and incessant whining about the Electoral College, the media are now riding the coronavirus panic. If they could just convince the public the president is responsible for every COVID-19 death, that he acted too soon, and acted too slowly, that he’s wielded too much power, and not enough, that he hasn’t said enough, but now he’s said too much, they could get their man elected in November. It’s almost as if the press was working from a list of Get Trump bullet points.
and it's working. I've spoken to quite a few Americans, many of them previously moderate leftists, who're now rabid leftists who are religiously sure that Trump is personally responsible for the pandemic and that every death is his personal fault, while at the same time believing that nobody dies at all, nobody is in hospital, and it's just a plot by Trump to cancel the elections and declare himself dictator for life.
A moderate leftist is the same as a rabid leftist or Marxist. They often refer to themselves simply as moderates, believing that their own views are not extreme, but rather the mainstream of American thought. They view anything to their right as right wing extremism or fascism....or for political effect "racist".
The culture of fear around Covid-19 is seriously harming people’s health.
From the perspective of the UK.
This follows a report last week that around half of beds in some English hospitals are currently empty. Health officials fear, in the words of the Financial Times, that this is because ‘people may be failing to seek help for… life-threatening conditions during the coronavirus pandemic’. The figures are extraordinary. In Week 14 of 2019, there were close to 160,000 emergency admissions to English hospitals (which was a higher-than-average number). In Week 14 of this year there were around 60,000.
Furthermore, the Office for National Statistics reported a very large spike in weekly deaths last week, which was latched on to by the pro-lockdown media and anti-government left as proof of the failings of Boris Johnson’s government over Covid-19. Yet what far fewer commentators focused on was the fact that out of these extra 6,000 deaths, just over half of them were officially recorded as deaths from or with coronavirus. That leaves a question mark over more than 2,500 of the extra deaths. It is entirely possible, of course, that some or even many of these deaths were virus-related but for some reason were not recorded as such. But these unclear extra deaths also raise the distinct possibility that the lockdown is harming people’s health in a very significant way. As the BBC reports, it could be that ‘the lockdown [is] having an impact, such as people not seeking treatment for other conditions or mental-health deaths going up’.
I've had the opposite experience. I live in a big, blue city and I've heard die-hard Democrats grudgingly tell me that they are favorably impressed with Trump's performance during the crisis. I think it's probably because their leaders–Pelosi, Schumer, Biden, etc.–are all either obviously ankle biting or simply MIA.
Can that last? Probably. Trump is the master of spin and I think he'll probably spin the much lower than expected number of fatalities as his accomplishment. And he'll be right to do so.
This summer is going to be amazing, with celebrations lasting for months and people booking travel and flocking to newly reopened restaurants. (Book your flights soon.)
One has to wonder about the Deep State’s role here.
Let’s say you are a TDS-suffering Deep Stater who wanted to destroy the economy in an election year but hide behind plausible deniability. There are various ways you and your law-breaking Resistance friends could try to do that, and among the best would surely be opportunistic power grabs during a pandemic, at all levels of government.
Impossible to know or prove either way, right now, but note how in all cases it:
(a) helps the Deep State bureaucracy and government power in general at all levels — and has revealed even more starkly just how deep the rot is re: respect for individual liberty and the Constitution and Bill of Rights,
(b) how it “grooms” the population to accept increasing levels of government control in our lives as not just inevitable but a good thing because we need them to protect us, and
(c) how it obviously hurts Trump by derailing a roaring economy roght as primary season is starting up and immediately after impeachment failed, and his opponents and the media get to weaponize the pandemic response against him.
And it doesn’t have to start out as a plot to turn into what looks like one because government is obsessed with exercise of power at all levels and acts as a monolith to always trample our Constitutional rights 24x7. It is undeniable at this point that opportunists of all kinds have definitely grabbed on to ride it for all it’s worth and trample our liberties as a bonus — so the net result is the same either way.
Meanwhile they’ve got us arguing about statistics and models instead of draconian power grabs and making us subjects to be ruled rather than citizens with a voice. Huh.
There was a time when I too would have found the above theory borderline crazy, but after watching actual plots unfold across multiple government agencies in cooperation with Deep State types in friendly foreign governments and even including judges, I am ready to believe anything now. Every option is on the table.
I have completely lost any sense of trust in government to look out for my interests as an average citizen who just wants my freedoms to remain intact.
