We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I agree with him. We need to get business back in business, with reasonable precautions of course. Since this virus will be circulating for years, the political challenge is when. The first patient who dies after opening up will be Trump's fault. Meanwhile, lives are being destroyed.
Really just anything to get the ball rolling again. We are screwing ourselves so badly right now and I'm over it. Let's get those 5 minute virus tests hyper-mass-produced and ubiquitously distributed so we can effectively identify and isolate those who are infected and contagious on a regular basis. That way, the rest of us can salvage what's left of the economy while a vaccine is developed.
Back when this was still in the beginning stages, my Mom who is 84 declared that she didn't want the country shut down because she valued her grandchildren's ability to live their lives and make a living as more important than everyone stopping their lives to protect her fragile health. In other words, she wanted things to just play out normally.
How many grandmas are we willing to end to get back to work? Well, I AM a grandma, over 73 but in reasonably good health, and I don't believe this shutdown is doing any good at this point. The time to shut down was months ago, when all those people in nursing homes could have been saved. Now, it's just posing and power-play theater by petty politicians, too many of whom actively wanted a recession to beat the Bad Orange Man. I have children and grandchildren who need to be able to support their families in a working economy. Open up and let us old folks take our chances like free Americans, instead of passive victims, cowering under the bed.
