Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"Spain, Europe's worst-hit country after Italy, says coronavirus tests it bought from China are failing to detect positive cases"
Whether deliberately ineffective or not, this shows once again we shouldn't rely on China for anything. It will also strengthen the belief that the virus was deliberately released by the Chinese government/army in order to cause a worldwide crisis and kill as many people as possible. And now China is sending military detachments and medical products around the world under the guise of "giving medical assistance". Wouldn't want to be hooked up to a Chinese ventilator by a Chinese army nurse and given Chinese drugs... If the tests don't work, how do they know the tests don't work?
When you get a new batch of reagents, you first run the tests against neutral saline to ensure you're not getting any false positives. You then run against known positive cultures (by means of other test methods) to ensure you're not getting false negatives. It looks like lots of test kits have failed both tests.
Economy: A Lot of the world is in the same boat, having to rely on the same patchy, unreliable data. Sure, I'm aghast at shutting down the economy, especially if there is no ground gained against the virus, such as expanded immunity. If there had been time, it might have been better to quarantine our elders in Vegas or other resorts, way cheaper too, than tanking the economy. Yes, I'm being tongue in cheek. The thing is we don't know the counterfactual, we dont know the losses and costs that might have accurred if the virus had been allowed to rip; possibly social upheaval also
Maybe this policy is the equivalent of a controlled shut down or deliberately crashing a plane on a foamed runway with first responders standing by. At least, the passengers had a better chance and the plane might even be intact enough to fly again. The governments around the world are and were making very difficult decisions without a net. I dont think I coulda. re Trump Press Conferences a massive ratings hit, now you know why liberals want network broadcasts stopped
More on this at The Federalist: As Trump’s Poll Numbers Rise, Media Begin Censoring Press Conferences Noah Shactman tweets, QUOTE: "NBC and CNN producers say they're through airing Trump's virus pressers. "We might take it from the top and then cut away after the first lie, and return when the lies stop." https://thefederalist.com/2020/03/26/as-trumps-poll-numbers-rise-media-begin-censoring-press-conferences/ It's worth a look if for no other reason to read the tweets. And Andrea Mitchell Fears ‘Skyrocketing’ Approval for Trump Amid Pandemic https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/kyle-drennen/2020/03/25/andrea-mitchell-fears-skyrocketing-approval-trump-amid-pandemic If ever there was an illustrative proof of the congenital anti-Trump bias in the media, here it is, shining at full-wattage virulence.
The Trump administration Pandemic Briefings are bringing strong beneficial ratings to all of the networks, which viewership translates directly to increased corporate revenue via advertising - and yet the same corporate heads want to sacrifice their revenue, damage their public-service standing, and cripple their shareholder's return - all because they can't stand to see Trump being successful and doing well. Is this the kind of point where people start speculating on the value of government nationalizing the media? This is how dictatorships gain traction in third world countries. Here? Yep!
First the left said the virus was no big deal and claimed that Trump was overreacting when he halted travel from China. Weeks later, they claimed he didn't act fast enough or take it more seriously. Next, the left claimed that Trump wasn't using his medical advisors and keeping the public informed. So, Trump started having daily public press conferences and the left - seeing that people were impressed with Trump's response - said it was no longer necessary to broadcast the conferences. People on the left not only have bad ideas, they are also bad people. Okay, not all of them, but a YUGE majority - the rest are just ignorant. "We might take it from the top and then cut away after the first lie, and return when the lies stop."
They want to hide Trump's lies? I find that hard to believe. "If China is telling the truth . . . ."
I saw a cartoon yesterday poking fun at China for claiming no new cases, though there clearly are new cases in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Are these not part of China these days, CCP? Before the virus, we cared about crazy stuff like that
At the risk of opening myself up to trillions of dollars worth of liability, I've been saying for a long time that we need a good plague to remind people of what's actually important. Be glad that you can complain of "First World Problems", it means your biggest problem isn't trying not to die today like so many other people have as their biggest problem every single day. Sort of the "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet." One sad part of this is that we're finding out just how many of the petty rules and regulations of government can be waived as unnecessary nuisances - and yet they're only going to be waived temporarily and once the emergency passes they'll go right back into effect as if we didn't just all witness first-hand how petty they really are. it's not that the rules and regs are petty.
it's to drum up revenue. and likely they will go into retro-effect as the revenue has trickled to a slow drip.. unless they DO want collapse. This is a war': NYC doctors describe fight against coronavirus
AOL as a news source? Puhleeeze! Why didn't they just hire Bahgdad Bob for this report? A lady doctor afraid to hug her kids? Does that mean that at other times, after her rounds through a hospital full of diseases other than CoVid-19, she goes home and hugs those kids despite carrying God knows what disease? (Like so many other medical "professionals" who wander around in scrubs after leaving the hospital---we've all seen them!!!!) All this NYC UBER-angst (NYC is the capital of ANGST in the best of times!) is set against the upstate NY experience where NONE of these conditions are "plaguing" medical services available to a a population generally not comprised of illegal aliens! If she thinks the normal risk of interacting with her children is acceptable - and I have not seen numbers that suggest that doctors' and nurses' children are significantly sicker than others over the last century- then it is likely highly significant that she considers this different, eh Old Codger?
So many people are not understanding why we "shut down the economy". They see cases rising while the economy has gone into a depression. And after all it's only gonna kill grandma and grandpa, right! So open it up and treat it like the flu.
They are missing the point totally. The reason for the quarantine and social distancing is to flatten the curve. The reason we must flatten the curve is NOT to save grandma and grandpa it is to keep from collapsing our hospitals. Imagine you get something simply like appendicitis and you show up at the hospital in great pain and they don't even let you in the door. Sorry, can't help you, come back in six months. Imagine your child has a 104 temp and you show up at your local clinic or the hospital and get the same answer. THAT is the risk we are facing not just that grandma and grandpa might die. This isn't the flu. Stop saying it is like the flu. This is an existential threat to our health care system and our healthcare providers. You maybe can't tell yet but the world will never be the same after covid19. Yes we will get down the road 18 months or so and most people will have had it and maybe only 3 or 4 million died worldwide. But then there will be covid20 followed by covid21 and covid22... Unless we find a cure or a prophylactic this is the big one. Imagine you get something simply like appendicitis and you show up at the hospital in great pain and they don't even let you in the door"
Quite an imagination there, Bunky. Where in the US is that happening? (Imaginations don't count) "Where in the US is that happening?"
Thank you! I hate to accuse people of being ignorant and you have proved my point so I don't have to feel so bad. In NYCity they are today, right now while you remain blissfully ignorant of it letting people die. Not in a evil way but out of necessity. Two weeks ago if you were in a hospital in NYCity and you stopped breathing or had a heart attack they would resuscitate you and likely you would live. Not today, not even yesterday, perhaps not for the next three months. They will let you die. AND we aren't even at the peak yet AND the hospitals are still viable. In a week maybe a little more it will peak in NYCity and the hospitals will be in trouble and they will be turning away accident victims and sick people BECAUSE at that point the hospitals will be more dangerous than sending you home AND there won't be a surgeon or an OR available to treat you. I know, I know... You can't see that yet. You probably are still laughing at the people in the grocery store keeping six feet between themselves and others. You probably chuckle when you see someone sanitize their grocery cart. But hold on to that sense of humor, Our Italy moment is coming. Someone you know and care about will be admitted to the hospital one day soon and you won't even be able to see them or talk to them and two days later they will be gone and their body will not even be released to the family. Just gone! You talked to them three days ago and today they are gone!! But you can't see it yet... As Trump’s Poll Numbers Rise, Media Begin Censoring Press Conferences: Is anyone surprised? Not I; I know they lie to us.
In Campus Sex Cases, Cross-Examination Is Now on the Table
It's about time. Lindsey Graham Begins Probe Into Origins Of FBI’s Russia Operation It's about time. FORECAST OF BRITISH CORONAVIRUS DEATHS REVISED, UM, DOWNWARD It's about time. Trump tells governors he is setting new coronavirus guidelines It's about time. Trump campaign threatens to sue networks airing ad claiming he called coronavirus a 'hoax' It's about time. My small coastal Texas county just issued a stay-at-home order through April 14. It has lots of exceptions--all construction and even landscaping is to continue, for instance--but there are still a lot of jobs being lost. Oddly, I also get infuriated calls from people who think they SHOULD have been ordered to stay home, especially if they have a vulnerable family member there. I don't have the heart to tell them if the order had covered them, it would not have had the effect of shielding them from being laid off. For now they should be happy they at least have the option to continue working and drawing a paycheck. But easy for me to say, I'm retired and holing up.
Yeah, brother. Gotta keep all those illegals employed mowing the grass. What would the well off do without their illegal laborers?
US Corporate/Government Greed--China:
Italy for leather goods Iran--Silk Road investments NOW--Say the really DIRTY WORD. Go ahead SAY IT-- SEATTLE Direct shipping links, Boeing, Amazon, Costco, and those beautiful wonderful docks right there in downtown SEATTLE. You know the docks whose primary shipping business is directly to/from CHINA! OH my don't tell me those wonderful liberated socialists in SEATTLE would do anything to offend their best trading buddies! Your dirty word of these times should be SEATTLE! We live in a small town and our nearest large town is 80,000. A nice hospital there and clinics too. A good friend is a nurse who just called to say she just came off here three day 12 hour work shift and the entire time was spent preparing for the impact of the Corona virus. She said she is emotionally and physically drained by the experience. They are setting up tents to house patients who they do not want to allow into the hospital. We still are getting snow and sub-freezing weather. They are preparing for the worst. You can no longer go to the hospital. If you are a visitor you must visit by phone. If you are sick you must call a special number and they will tell you where and when to show up. If you have potential Corona virus symptoms you will be scheduled to go to the tent at the end of the parking lot where they will asses you. If and when it gets worse they will be forced to go to the next level where some people simply will not be taken care of. She told me she is dreading going back to work in two days.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/hear-bob-dylans-new-song-973993/ All this talk about Coronavirus. In America, almost three million more people become infected with HIV every year. No one is talking about getting that epidemic under control. It would be racist!
Grew up in the lower east side, JHS 104 and Stuy. Many friends still in NYC, none describing what you say...
