Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Viking skeleton’s DNA test proves she was a woman warrior.
Yes, the skeleton was assumed to be male and found to be female but finding a sword doesn't make her a warrior. Roman writers attest that the barbarian Celtic armies, sometimes allied with Germanic tribes, sometimes confused with them, and just to the south of them at any rate, had women fighting alongside men. As Christopher B's link notes, however, evidence for this practice among Germanic tribes is less certain, even a thousand years earlier. It is considered likely because of other evidence of more equality between the sexes.
The argument that the swords and war-gear may have been more decorative and symbolic, even among men, is also possible but there are warning bells there. There was a tendency in the late 20th C to see most weapons in earlier eras as symbolic, as there was a preferred narrative that it violence was mostly a product of civilised nations fielding armies and oppressing others. There are examples of men affecting military garb for status - hell, we see it even today - but refusing to see the signs of violence in archaeology because that would destroy modern theories is also well-attested. Coronavirus: I don't think this is the big one, ala 1918, good thing too, since the response wasn't stellar.
This is not to say that it won't be tragic for the elderly, create havoc in our healthcare delivery, cause disruption, and cost a lot of money. Anecdotal, I know, but there appears to be no outreach by the CDC to students returning from Italy as they go through Ohare. Anyone know otherwise? My mother was a child during the Spanish Flu epidemic. She lived on the family farm in southeastern Manitoba (Canada). While the epidemic raged, the family self-isolated. Mum's father (my grandfather) would go into the nearest town upon occasion to pick up needed supplies. However, he would not go near the house, but slept in the barn. I never did hear all the details, but rather suspect the necessary farm chores were equally segregated until the threat passed.
Their techniques worked; the family survived. Bloomberg's $500 million. My calculation is that he could have given each American $1.52 each.
Math is hard.
That $1.52 would cover me for a tall Americano at Starbucks. I suppose a joke about short Americanos would be unfortunate.
I see one of these calculations several times a year: generally off by a factor of 1,000, as in this case, but other factors of ten are pretty common, too.
I'd like to think that our elected representatives are better at placing the decimal point, but I'm skeptical. Most amusing. All you need are significant digits. 500 million dollars; 320 million people; 50 divided by 32 =~1.56; measure is $ so $1.56 dollars per person.
Why is that so difficult? Democrats have a very hard time with figures. Can't tell the difference between tens, thousands, millions, billions or trillions...
On the other hand, if Bloomberg were willing to start sleeping on the sidewalk, he could write every American a check for about $200. My pricetag for voting for the man would be considerably higher than that.
A democrat talking head just said that women are the core of the Democrat party and it is the women who elect democrats. And in the next breath she claimed it was misogyny that kept Warren from being on the ballot. So I think what she is saying is that Democrat women are misogynists and all democrats are misogynists. Prove me wrong.
I was shocked to discover that Brian Williams is still alive.
Viking skeleton’s DNA test proves she was a woman warrior
Uh, burial accoutrements do NOT prove anything about whether the woman whose skeleton was found, was indeed and "warrior"! She could have been a combat team's lucky charm, the team mascot, the team "punch," the Clan oracle used for predicting strategy or tactics...... Show me a woman's skeleton in battle gear, with several notches in her helmet or broken or scarred bones, then I might consider whether she was truly a "warrior." Back then, there were no breaks given on the strength and endurance tests for reaching warrior status, as there are now for virtually every female engaged in police, fire rescue or military combat training. Recall that "world-class" female sports teams practice against and regularly LOSE to younger men's teams in their sport: gold medal US women's hockey team losing to HS boys' all-star teams, regularly! Testosterone DON'T LIE! What leader of a small Viking raiding party would be willing to risk his mission on a biologically-inferior team member, in hand-to-hand combat where strength and speed are a necessity for survival??? Well, maybe somebody had to mind the boats when others were doing the actual fighting. Much, much easier today, when those engaged in "combat" can push a button to launch weapons from a mile away or fire light-weight rifles from 400 yds. without even seeing the enemy. California’s lawmakers and citizens have been duped: Surprahz, Surprahz!
Ten year old kids should know better than to play by pointing toy guns at people in cars or otherwise.
Also the situation was handled stupidly. I just noticed last weekend that Hopalong Cassidy is still an early Saturday morning offering. Some things never change; some antics will always attract the young'uns. Some adults are simply stupid.
"Bloomberg's $500 million. My calculation is that he could have given each American $1.52 each."
Well, you obviously didn't graduate from a modern school and don't understand democrat math. If you use democrat math it is obvious that Bernie or Elizabeth could pay for all the free stuff with a little tax on stock market speculation. ...or maybe a bit of luck with the cattle futures.
