Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

An article in Rolling Stone about plastic waste that:
- Quotes a series of dubious or disproven assertions by green organizations - Does not quote any real scientists or opposting views - Ends by tying this to Trump Really? That's link worthy here? Here's the short form: 1. Lefties ruin all they touch. Greenies are lefties. Greenies created the plastics crisis by taking scary grainy photos of smokestacks and banning the incineration of waste - which returnees all the carbon in plastic to the ecosystem. 2. Lefties never admit they are wrong; instead they capitalize on their messes for political gain. Greenies are lefties. Greenies will now use this manufactured crisis to expand gubmint and entrench themselves. Wow. You read the whole article? I couldn’t make it through the third paragraph.
The idea that I ingest a credit card worth of plastic every week is laughable. Notice also, that it is perfectly acceptable for a super green, World Wildlife Fund, to pay for research, the results being irrefutable, but any supported research from say, Big Oil, is dismissed with prejudice. I do believe we all play a part in the care of our Lord’s creation, and there is room for improvement. This is just another hit piece against Big Oil and Big Soda. Becoming Biden's vp is a real plum. I don't think anyone seriously considers that Biden serves his full term.
So take a hard look at what failed Dem candidate coat tails into the Oval by agreeing to wait a couple of months for the dementia to turn the rest of Biden's brain to oatmeal. I would not be surprised if the VP slot was given to Hillary.
That ticket could actually be the one that would beat the current trend.
Which would be the irony of Obama Biden. Nobody was vile enough to remove Obama. But Hillary would be to remove Biden In yesterday's Texas primary, Donald Trump got more votes - as the incumbent Republican candidate - than Joe, Bernie, Bloomberg and Pocahontas, combined. Of course it was an Open Primary, so one gets either a Republican or Democrat ballot to cast the votes for one's candidates, and we have a number of local and state seats up for grabs (this is probably why most Republicans turned out to vote) but.....still I find it an interesting tidbit.
As motivated as Democrats might be to pick a Presidential Candidate, Republicans are also engaged. There were seven other Republican Candidates on the ballot (including "Uncommitted") and they collectively garnered about 6% of the vote. Coronavirus fallout:
China’s Non-Manufacturing & Manufacturing PMIs Show to What Unfathomable Extent the Economy Has Collapsed QUOTE: Purchasing Managers’ Indices (PMIs) are a tally of how executives see their own company – whether business activity at their company rose or fell compared to the prior month, whether new orders rose or fell, whether they added or shed staff, etc. Executives and their companies remain unnamed. A value above 50 means expansion; a value below 50 means contraction. PMIs are an early indication of business conditions – and by extension, of the economy. And in China, both, the PMI for the non-manufacturing sector and the PMI for the manufacturing sector, released on March 1, have collapsed to unfathomable lows, showing to what extent the measures to impede the spread of the coronavirus have shut down the economy. The official Non-Manufacturing PMI, released by the National Bureau of Statistics, collapsed from 54.1 in January (still well into expansion mode) to a previously unthinkable low of 29.6 in February. Since 2007, China’s non-manufacturing sector has grown every single month. Until February: https://wolfstreet.com/2020/03/01/chinas-non-manufacturing-manufacturing-pmis-show-to-what-unfathomable-extent-the-economy-has-collapsed/ After He Found California's Indefinite Detention of Sex Offenders Wasn't Working, the State Shut Him Down and Destroyed His Research: Is anyone surprised at that? Can you say "cover up"?
Re: San Francisco's No Arrest Policy
I've seen this happen a couple of times in the East Bay. So we are left with a choice: Allow store employees to intervene; or give up on having a safe public space. The Police don't want store employees to stop or detain shoplifters, because the Cops want exclusive authority to detain or arrest people. There is no longer a "citizen's arrest". I hate to say it, but the police are the real villains in this story. They have applied a great deal of political pressure in Washington to disarm men, to make self-defense a crime, and to make it illegal to stop people who are in the act of breaking the law. These responsible actions are all related: they are part of an informed, active citizenry. The Police however, want a nation of sheep. America should be a place where nobody can take any action except an authorized state agent, in a uniform. "Marine plastics picked up by the currents collect in massive ocean “gyres” — the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas. "
I can track boats in real time all over the earth but not a floating patch of plastic twice the size of Texas. It is a paper-thin surface layer. That's not a good thing, but not the image they want to conjure. You are supposed to think of old toys, plastic bags, and two-liter bottles, plus dying wildlife.
I am told the Pacific Plastic Patch is not really distinguishable when one is sailing through it, as the plastic doesn't really appear to be any worse there - it just is noticeable as a statistical finding. Not sure how true that might be, but I do find the discovery of wholesale ingestion of micro-pellets into the food chain to be disturbing and disappointing.
In my work in the Caribbean, we would often organize company beach cleanups on some of the smaller islands, uninhabited ones. There you'd encounter plastic on the beaches at the storm tide line that was sometimes 3 ft deep. A lot of it was fishing waste: nets, buoys, lines, that sort of thing, and every plastic jug imaginable. You can fill up a good sized boat pretty quickly. They say nearly all the plastic waste comes from three major rivers located in China and Africa. I don't doubt it. My Caribbean island had a typical land fill, next to a typical swamp, that flooded with every tropical rain storm and carried off a stream of un-compacted waste to, you guessed it - the surrounding ocean. It's easy to see how the Third World contributes. I'm surprised that with all the advances in plastic technology that have transpired over the years, we have still not figured out how to innovate cost-effective incineration of plastic for powergen or better chemical formulations that would facilitate cost-effective recycling. As consumers we need to keep insisting that the petrochemical giants keep focused on improving this. There is effective incineration - including pressurized combustion and water-jet scrubbing of the exhaust. It was banned in the 70s in one of the environmental lobby's first big "successes"
Why would the police waste their time arresting a shoplifter who isn't going to be prosecuted? The DA ran on a platform of not going after criminals. SF sinks even deeper into the mire.
It's clear that the DA and mayor (and probably most of the legislature) have no interest the local business environment much less the social environment. One wonders why a group of small business owners (and representatives of large businesses too, for that matter) hasn't already walked into the DA's and mayor's offices and tell them that they will pull up stakes and leave - and then do it. Let the leftist idiots cheer how their government doesn't kowtow to business interests over the "disadvantaged."
When there are no places to buy toothpaste, clothes, or groceries because they've all be run out of town, they might understand how wrong they are but I wouldn't bet on it. "affordable housing problem"
Solution: Actively deport all people here illegally. Move the homeless into where ever they were living. Make them take the job that the illegal aliens were working at. Win/win. Dr Freeman Dyson, the mathematical wizard who used to have fun during his lunch time with his colleagues, these productive meetings often led to highly creative and conclusive brainstorming sessions. It is good to read that the corona virus covid 19 cases have reduced in China. They have very advanced medical care systems that can seek, find and provide assistance at a highly rapid pace.
