RE: Locusts in Africa. Many years ago there was a TV special about locusts in Africa showing the natives smiling and gathering up 10's of thousands of locusts. They roasted them and ate them. It was like Mardi Gras. They preferred the locusts to the crops. I suspect that the locusts today play well and bring in lots of donations and that is really what this story is all about.

In most of Africa farmers could outgrow the U.S. The land is good, the season is long and water is available. The problem is the government and the will.

Re Africa -

Environmentalists want to keep it unspoiled.

But they don't mind a high death count, as long as it's something they can get an ego boost when they're needed to 'help' fix what they caused.

Maybe what they're doing should be called 'Pathological Environmentalism' - it doesn't matter how much damage they do as long as they get good feelz for how they're doing it...

What remains mostly un-commented in the modern internet age is the role that the internet information superhighway has played in making the average individual a better, more informed citizen. Twitter can be a toxic swamp a lot of the time, but it can also be instant, karmic justice. We now have an entire volunteer army of citizen journalist cum fact-checkers cum commenters on all sides of the issues who keep the public discussion spirited and often quite focused. And they are engaged and interested in their society's future.

Is there anyone who doubts that the gradual decline of the printed media and now electronic media is in a large part due to the instant input and feedback provided this cultural group? It makes me wonder how it will change over time. For now, it has made the country more polarized, but one can see that even that is changing as the sector matures and people get better at assimilating information and forming their own views independently. Look at how the Trump phenomenon has changed over the past 4 years. I think it's a great thing for society, even through the growing pains of the toxic Twitter swamps.

Twitter is interesting to watch for the packaged attacks that come out there. About 2 days ago they started politicizing the corona virus, of course blaming Trump for everything that has happened or they say will happen.

Makes me somewhat angry, because what party basically stopped anything from happening on anything the past 6 months because of the whole Shampeachment fiasco?

I was hoping the author's analysis would settle me but it pretty much centered on the fact that we are not likely to have a Black Death situation.

The author did say that supply chains are getting more decentralized and dependent on China but that is something that will take years. Try buying an N95 mask. Most of them are made in China and they are probably using all of them. Antibiotics? China produces 80% of ours. A large percentage of what we buy are either made in China or made of parts of which many are made in China. They are not making nearly as much of all that stuff as they did and until China gets a handle on it, there will be shortages of that stuff.

There are three notable sound bites about the corona virus:
1. It causes death in about 2% of those who get it. This may be high because so far most patients are not in countries with the best health care.
2. The CDC is now admitting that it is unlikely that anything we could do will prevent it from getting to our country and the virus will undoubtedly go pandemic worldwide.
3. The CDC estimates that over time (18 months maybe) about 70% of Americans will get the corona virus.

Now if you take these things together you could conclude that since the U.S. population is about 330 million that about 230 million will get the virus. Of those 230 million about 4.6 million will die. If these numbers even come close to being accurate this is a big f**ing deal (as Joe Biden would say). One talking head said it could well be that before this is over every extended family will lose someone to this virus.

I would like to think that modern medicine will mitigate this estimate but honestly I'm losing some confidence. The CDC has been a little slow to react and their prognostications on TV are a little light on fact or confidence. They are kinda whistling past the graveyard and I get the feeling we are being treated like children who they don't want to scare.

It all reminds me of a cartoon I saw in a magazine many years ago. It was in the aisle of a passenger plane and the pilot and co-pilot were walking done the aisle towards the back door wearing parachutes. They had their hands in their pockets, a kind of "what me worry!" look on their faces and whistling so as not to appear afraid.

This is not dissimilar to how the officials on TV appear...

Anyone who has been there for an aging parent, and seen the long, slow decline in cognitive abilities as they progress into dementia, knows what they are looking at when they see Joe Biden. It's very sad that he's still being propped up as the last great hope of the Democratic machine politic. He has no business being there, and one can see from his half-hearted showings that he really would rather not be doing it. I wouldn't either, in his shoes.

It's a shame in a way that Hunter S Thompson isn't around any more to follow the race like he did in the main part of his career. His incisive, caustic, sarcastic wit in this field of candidates would make for hysterically funny reading, not to mention his probable apoplexy with Trump World. It's too bad that our spectrum of coverage on US politics these days seems to be confined to Right, Left, and Euro viewpoints, with less than a handful of decent exceptions.

It would really all be about who he picks as a running mate. Stacy Abrams is in the wings. She would be worse than Bernie.

Biden is still possible. The Democrats do not want Bernie. They want Bloomberg's money but don't think he could win the election. As bad as Biden's dementia is he is actually electable for the Dems (not sure what that says about them). So if he makes it down to the convention watch to see how he picks (or the puppet masters pick) for the VP. THAT will be the next president.
