We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. I am saddened that the Boy Scouts have collapsed under the relentless assault from the left. The girl scouts will survive because they became 'woke' early on and now is just another arm of the left quietly spreading leftist propaganda. But the Boy Scouts are in trouble. They were too male and too white to survive the onslaught.

Twelve days shutting down the railways, and he asks for patience? Like you say, Trudeau has effectively removed himself from governance.

I know that an examination of who-was-where-when shows that Fidel couldn't have been Justin Trudeau's father. Nonetheless, for those who thought there still might have been such a possibility, Trudeau's lack of decisiveness here indicates that he has none of the Fidel decision-making genes in him. Could you imagine Fidel calling for patience if there was such action against Cuban railways? No, Fidel would have gotten rid of the protestors by day one.

It boggles my feeble mind that the needs of an entire nation are being compromised to appease a handful of zealots.

I still don't understand why some private entity doesn't $ue the $hit out of the protestors for the damage they have done. Someone, some where, has been harmed by the delay in freight movement.

Or is it legal in Canada to intentionally trespass and and damage another party?

I never thought I would hear of cases of institutionalized pedophilia that were worse or more widespread than the Catholic Church. It will be interesting to see how this story eventually made the light of day, including whatever connections there may be to the advent of open acceptance of homosexuality in troop leaders.

When the idea of mixing the sexes in Scouts organizations first came up, my first concern was overnight camping and the inevitable scandals. Then it occurred to me that you can't eliminate the possibility of sexual dalliances by requiring Scouts to be an all-male organization, you can only eliminate the heterosexual variety. But back then, I wasn't yet hearing about gay scoutmasters.

The way I see it, if your organization can't figure out how to eliminate pedophiles, you're going to have trouble. You've got to find a way to get adults in there who understand that the kids are to be guided, not exploited. Same for teachers, priests, coaches, you name it. The adults have to know the difference between their duty and their personal indulgence--between other human beings and toys.

You make the mistake of thinking that this is the fault of the organization or because of lack of appropriate controls. This is no more true for the Boy Scouts than it is for any organization in the world. Many of the Libertarian regulations and laws forced on us prevent adequate investigation into employees and volunteers AND prevent adequate monitoring for infractions. In my state it is illegal to even ask a potential employee if they have a criminal record. It is literally impossible to know what is in a persons heart and mind ahead of any actions they might take to harm you or someone else. IMHO the real problem here is trial lawyers and class action lawsuits that allows ambulance chasers to go after deep pockets or targeted groups.

Well, I would say the math refutes that conclusion. The pedophilia charges are going back a whole lot further than 20 years. In my opinion I could probably tolerate a homosexual that I knew well and had passed a thorough background check on, long before I could tolerate any kind of pedophile around kids. Also my opinion: There is only one cure for pedophilia. The UK is a sad example of what happens when you lose sight of your cultural and personal responsibilities to keep your kids safe. It becomes a cancer across generations.

Pedophilia pays big these days, it is better than gambling. All you need is to remember the name of your scoutmaster or priest from 40 years ago and accuse him of unwanted touching. Bingo, all of a sudden the money pours in and as the 'victim" you have to be belived. Wasn't Cardinal Pell brought down by one accuser in a "he said" lawsuit?

Good point. And there is no penalty for completely fabricating allegations. Women make false rape claims all the time. If they get caught or retract their story, they don't get in any trouble. Many domestic violence claims are fabricated; they appear out of thin air, during the divorce proceedings. And they can't be disputed, either. The husband automatically gets hit with a restraining order to stay away from the wife, and the kids. And if the wife goes to the husband's workplace to see him, he is in violation of the restraining order. Not her. The court system is a joke.

I say this as a practising and devout Roman Catholic: where the Church failed was in attempting to cover up the issue and effectively hide the offending priests.

What the Church needed were bishops who flatly told offending clergy: "I forgive you. But you are removed from your pastoral duties forthwith and I direct that you turn yourself in to the authorities immediately. If you do not, I shall inform them myself."

And because the hierarchy did not do this, we are now paying for it.

I used to work with offenders, and every place that allows adults access to children will have them trying to get in. The Catholic Church is big, the Boy Scouts are big, that's why there are lawsuits and we put a lot of stories into one bin. But other churches, youth sports, music and the arts, schools - everything - has the same problem.

Looks like they're basically saying that solving NP hard problems is NP hard. That is, you can prove that a proof exists, but it consists of an infinite number of steps.

The question remains whether that constitutes saying that the statement under test is unprovably true.

Once while chatting online with someone in New York, we talked about the Catholic Church and pedophile clergy.

My interlocutor (who was himself in the education field) noted that the number of incidents and rate of offenders within the New York State Education Department would shock the hell out of me.
