We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Food fads have come and gone ever since humans had food choices (which has been a tiny fraction of human history). I saw this: Why we fell for clean eating.
I don't know who "we" refers to, but it didn't include me.
It was not long ago when the experts thought that cereal was the right breakfast food. That was mostly marketing, but Mr. Kellogg and others thought it might helpfully reduce sexual desire and promote clean thinking compared to "overstimulating" eggs, sausages, and pie for breakfast. Now "we" know cereal is garbage nutrition.
FYI, my usual breakfast is two coffees before my workout, and a protein shake afterwards. I am not claiming that that is "right" but it keeps me trim and strong. If I did manual labor all day on the farm, I'd go for eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, kippers, home fries, grits, and pie. We fed our young growing kids on breakfasts like that. Pancakes or waffles and bacon on Sunday. They grew, and got smart enough.
That sounds way over the top. Grains aren't the perfect food but there is certainly nothing wrong with them. Perhaps you object to the cooked product rolled into flakes or shaped like O's. But, then, what is bread? Do you believe that bread is garbage nutrition too?
Don't get me wrong, I love bacon eggs and hash browns or pancakes and when we travel that's what I go for even if I eat it for Breakfast or lunch. But at home cereal is convenient and it is actually good for you. I will admit that part of the reason it is good for you is because the government mandates that it contain 25% of a child's MDR for key vitamins and minerals. BUT you have to include that fact in your appraisal and because of that breakfast cereal with milk is a good meal. You would be hard pressed to provide a better meal for children or adults.
My favourite food is a very rare steak and I love a good fry-up. However, I've been eating Weetabix, a British-made cereal dish, for breakfast for decades and I have a quite physically-challenging career. I find it filling and a good source of energy at a time in the day when my appetite hasn't yet got going-I make up for it later.
I've been taking charcoal tablets every day for about three months. Two or three capsules, with each meal. I think I feel better. They're supposed to absorb all the toxins. And that's a good thing, because I'm off my gluten free Keto weight watchers diet.
When I had gestational diabetes the one thing that I was absolutely prohibited from eating was cereal. This was ANY cereal. No oatmeal, no breakfast cereal, sugared or not because of the rise in blood sugar and carbs.
Of course that was the only time that I ever craved cereal. Rice Krispies.
