We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

When I saw the White Women sitting on their hands while Trump announced great news, I knew he had won again. What better message can he send: I want to help you. They don't.

I could see Pelosi bristle every time he mentioned murderous Islamic terrorists. But when he introduced the wife of a soldier killed by Baghdadi even Pelosi had to applaud. That must have stuck in her craw.

When she ripped up the speech it probably felt good to her. It was JUST what he wanted, though. Trump couldn't have scripted a better visual to convince Americans who are on the fence.

Pelosi pique. Pique is the weapon of small, weak-minded people. Pique and walking out, which Pelosi did during a White House meeting, are the only weapons the weak-minded have. Whatever acuity Pelosi may have once possessed has been ravaged by old age. Sad.

I think Trump showed great restraint in not making them look as bad as they really are. Imagine if, after saying that blacks have the lowest unemployment ever and the Democrats and even the Congressional Black Caucus members sit on their hands, Trump were to say something like, "Now, most of the Democrats including the black Democrats in this room were apparently uninterested in the low unemployment rate for blacks that they didn't stand up or even clap for that great news. I think that speaks volumes about how they really feel about blacks."

Re: freelancers. Democrats probably prefer a unionized workforce with mandatory dues flowing into a left leaning political machine. Likewise it is easier to hide high taxation in payroll and other business taxes; a self-employed friend of mine likes to relate a story how he cured his wife from her leftism by showing the tax papers.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but when Al Gore was born (and I was 17), people weren't obsessed with counting polar bears, and even if they had had been, they didn't have access to the plethora of money and aircraft available today to do it with. There were probably a whole lot more uncounted polar bears in '48 than there are today.

Notwithstanding all our hubris about technology, vast swathes of Arctic Canada and Russia are entirely unobserved and unobservable for any kind of serious census.

I love the vegan survey. It reminds me of a survey I saw in New Hampshire a few years ago in which a UNH student conducted a survey in which 90% of those surveyed were very much in favor of a bottle recycling bill. (Thank God, we are one of the few states still without one.). It turned out in her sampling, she never left the UNH campus. I suspect the vegan survey has very similar sampling statistics.

I have to congratulate Nasty Nancy on finding a new way to prove she has the maturity and character of a spoiled, petulant 6 year old. Behavior like that would get the average (non-progressive household) child a butt swat or a long time out.

The scary part is that the witch is 3rd in succession to the presidency.

No, no, it's much worse. Case in point is a former colleague of my wife, who is a strict vegan, and raised her kids on a vegan diet. The kids are underweight, undersized, and only developed normally because they regularly sneaked burgers and hot dogs when out of the house. Mom went to the doctor for foot pains, and was diagnosed with a broken foot (from stepping on a stone!), and the beginnings of osteoporosis.

Another colleague tried feeding his dog a vegan diet. When the pup became sickly and listless, his veterinarian chewed out the owner and prescribed meat, meat, MEAT.

Fortunately, my wife is distressingly sane, and demands we dine on medium-rare steak at least once a week.

That's pretty bad when you consider that dogs are considered omnivores (like bears). Now cats on the other hand need Meat. They are carnivores.

I get the feeling he's poking fun at the situation, based on his observation that there's no proof of it.

I do not find him interesting or funny, but I would take anything he writes with a grain of salt....much like I handle any late night talk show host.

The conservative media is crowing about Trump's speech, but to be honest I didn't think it was that great. He had a good few obvious flubs, not that it's terribly important. But I thought that all the game-show Hallmark moments were not appropriate to the occasion's tradition - so I guess that means that we're now stuck with the feature, going forward, making a spectacle of political opportunism. I thought there were many deliberate provocations and exaggerations for the Democrats, which will be interesting to see resolved in public debate. Unemployment numbers is one, yes we are in a modern renaissance but - not at historic lows, according to the record books. My feeling is that he could easily have alienated more potential voters than he won over.

Trump has every right to be highly pissed off right now, and he appears to be pretty good at channeling anger into effective counterattack. He'll most likely win re-election. His antagonists are kind of left now, to stew in the juices of their own making. It's starting to become apparent that there are more Independents and Democrats attending his rallies than those of the Democratic Candidates. That's gotta sting a little.

Ahem. It would appear that the minister "misspoke"! The next day he issued a hasty climb-down.

2 February: "We would ask that [media outlets] have a licence. Yes."

3 February: "Let me be clear. Our government has no intention to impose licensing requirements on news organizations nor will we try to regulate news content."

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall when he was briefed on reality between these two statements!

We need the Liberals up here in Canada to commit many, many more of these gaffes.

While I admit, necessity would cause other products to be derived if cows weren't around or allowed to roam free (which would kill them, because their ability to survive without us is gone), but just like the argument for not using "fossil fuels", there are thousands of products derived from refining oil, as well as using coal ash and products from coal and natural gas.

I like to bring this up when some watermelon thinks we're 'killing the planet".

If you want to live without the first world comforts than go live in a third world.

Let me guess. Vegan propaganda started popping up everywhere and everyone in the media began talking about it. Every celebrity got on the bandwagon and every second talk show guest was a vegan, kids were taught about it in school, vegans even got their own parade. Eventually the government decided the science was settled, people’s diet was too important to leave up to the commoners. Close enough?

Recycling trash and garbage is necessarily a scam - if it's worth recycling it's not trash and garbage. Nobody's "recycling" houses or '65 Mustangs or diamond earrings or antique furniture or Monets - they're just selling valuable used goods. Once you've gotten all the good out of a good, if the raw materials themselves are valuable, you sell them for scrap prices. Aluminum, copper, iron, those have value. Paper and plastic, not so much.
