We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
As a Dutch person myself: beautifully spoken and to the point. Brexit is not about earning a little bit more or less money, it is about autonomy. And let's not forget that the Dutch referendum on the EU constitution in 2005 was a solid rejection of that constitution, which was of course immediately ignored by our political elites. (After two more referenda in which the hoi polloi voted the wrong way the Dutch politicians cancelled the law that enabled referenda.)
Additionally, any Dutch person living in London/the UK for six years should have learned that being outspoken doesn't mean you have to be impolite.
The Dutch are blessed with an extremely high disinterest in hierarchy or authority, which does further increase our tendency to be undiplomatic at all the proper times.
"The Dutch politicians cancelled the law that enabled referenda."
It's the same situation in America. The government has completely stopped holding referendums. The people of California voted against Gay marriage in a referendum, but the results of the referendum were overturned by a Judge. We didn't even know that they could do that.
If we had a comprehensive phone directory of our government, then people could call specific bureaucrats directly; to voice their concerns. And if those bureaucrats were unresponsive, then they could be petitioned for removal from office.
So really, Brexit is not just about autonomy, or identity. It's about the fact that government in general has run amok. We have millions of invisible freeloaders in London, and in Washington, that we can't seem to get rid of.
