Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"The Nuclear deal was a charade"
Obama's entire presidency was a charade. He did very little that could be honestly construed as pro-American but was relentless in his pursuit of anti-American policies. I thought then and still think that Obama was a Manchurian candidate. He was not an American he was controlled by foreign powers and foreign money and still he forms and backs groups who are anti-American in their intent and actions. He is the person behind Russia-gate. He appointed communists to his cabinet and to run critical departments. His actions are as inexplicable as they are uninvestigated. Anyone who doubted that his private motto was to "Make American a Disaster Again" should have had his eyes opened when the politically left Nobel awards committee gave him the peace prize before he did anything meaningful in office. IMHO winning a political Nobel award should disqualify anyone from public office. What they are essentially declaring is that they believe the recipient is as far left as they are. Diversity Uber Alles!!
Finally. The Feds — including ICE — appear to be investigating Rep. Ilhan Omar: GOOD. Overdue, too. Kevin Williamson Moves the Goalposts in Judging Trump’s Presidency: What would anyone expect from the NeverTrumper National Review? Sharyl Attkisson Refiles Spying Suit, Exposes Big Deep State Players: Mr. Trump should step in to help her case. Double Standard Much? Biden's Threat to Withhold $1B from Ukraine Violated the Law: Of COURSE he did. Iran’s Unpardonable and Unpardoned Incompetence Exposes Same in America’s Ruling Class: Democrats. The thing that saved us was how exceptionally lazy Obama was. I used to regularly check the official White House calendar to see what his agenda was. His normal day was he would come into the Oval Office around 10:30-11:00, then he would have lunch with Biden around noon, and then after lunch he would go jump on Air Force 1 to go fundraising and partying around the country. He would usually get back late in the night, and would repeat the pattern the next day. The fact is Obama could make speeches, but was pretty clueless and incompetent about everything else. Most of the stuff he claimed he did was invalid, like signing fake treaties with Iran where he had no legal authority to do so. It had his signature on it but was not legally binding--Iran disavowed that it was binding on Iran right off the bat (but then took the position it was binding on the other signatories).
Contrast this with Trump who is pretty much working 24-7. I remember in the old days when the press would criticize Reagan for coming into work at 7:30 in the morning and leave around 5 or so, that he was treating the presidency lke a 9-5 job. But Reagan was a workaholic compared to Obama. Re: How One Librarian Tried to Squash Goodnight Moon.
Again we see how the tyranny of a minority ruins things for every else. In the same way that the NYT drivrs much of the news cycle, the NYPL drove sales of children's books. My wife and I read Goodnight Moon hundreds of times to our daughter as it was one of her favorites (my daughter had and still has very good taste!). It is a charming, beautiful, ans soothing book to fead before bedtime and deserves to be in the top ten most checked out books. Unfortunately, I was not able to interest my daughter in my favorite when she was a little older, Paddle to the Sea which is a wonderful and educational book for young grade schoolers! Except Moore was right.
The book is wearisome sentimentality w/ few positives. Moore was the gatekeeper for the library. It had limited resources. She tried to use them well. That was her job. She didn't ban it. The book took off through commercial avenues. All is well. Except people are dumber for having read that book. Wearisome sentimentality to an adult, perhaps. But a delightful and soothing bedtime story to the wee bairn. They'll tackle Dostoyevsky soon enough, let them enjoy something sweet and simple while they can.
I do wonder what people who deride this book read to their young kids instead, if they have them (which Moore unsurprisingly did not.) In 1978 I read an article about "The Anarchist Cookbook". It made me want to read the book but it was not available anywhere. So I went to my local bookstore and ordered it. When it came in I got the notice and went in to pick it up. The lady at the counter was outraged that they could even print such a disgusting book. I reminded her of the 1st amendment and pointed out the irony of someone working in a bookstore who believed in banning/burning books. But it all fell on deaf ears.
Many years later I was downsizing my junk and sold off a hundred or two hundred books to used bookstores. I had some good books and all in excellent shape but sadly the typical price for a hard cover was $2 and a soft cover was $1 and many were simply rejected as they thought no one would buy them. But "The Anarchist Cookbook" brought me $8. Go figure. Don't wonder, simply ask politely.
We read a lot of Dr. Seuss, and I remember spending many night re-reading Lowly Worm stories by Richard Scarry. In addition to the Children's Bible. This shows how ridiculous fans are to assume it's either "Goodnight Moon" or "The Brothers Karamazov". My point was proved. My kids loved Goodnight Moon, we read it to them hundreds of times. Other favorites were "We're Going on a Bear Hunt," "Runaway Bunny," "The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night" and "I'll Love you Forever." (I really liked "Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night" too, because the wonderful illustrations brought back fond memories of where I went to college in New England.)
And we would always say to our kids when we put them to bed: "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as you're living, my [child's name] you'll be." We would add at the end, "good night, don't let the bedbugs bite," and then in Japanese "Oyasuminasai" (goodnight) and they would answer "Oyasuminasai." And when I was a kid, I loved Paddle to the Sea. QUOTE: Here’s All The Liberals Who Were COMPLETELY WRONG About Trump’s Trade War with China — It’s a Long, Long List… On top of the liberals, you can add the supposedly conservative crew at Reason. They persist in characterizing Trump's dealings with China as "protectionist" in spite of the fact that it's been obvious for months years now, that Trump is aiming for a more free-market relationship with China than the woefully-lopsided arrangements we'd been saddled with before. |
