Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Notre Dame
So do they propose to fix that problem by turning it into a mosque? Or a synagogue??? To be literal, I think the PTB in France are trying to backdoor their way into their preferred re-envisioning of Notre Dame by claiming that a rebuild of the original architecture will be unsafe.
Ice raids benefited American workers. Um, yeah. This is exactly why Americans should be for Trump's immigration policies (which were also Bill Clinton's policies, by the way). Making sure that people come here legally benefits us all. I have talked to several immigrants who came here legally and are now American citizens. They all agree that people who jump the line are criminals who need to be deported.
Get in line. Do it right. Live like Americans when you get here and we have no problem with you. It's more than that. If anyone comes here as an immigrant they should be able to support themselves. And if they cannot support themselves then their sponsors and family should support them. The groups who bring in immigrants and refugees are actually paid by our government for their efforts. Reverse this and require them to pay. The U.S. didn't "need" more immigrants back in the 60's when the Democrats hatched this plan to flood our country with replacement voters, They don't "need" them now. The ONLY reason we have an active immigration policy is because some people and some special interest groups benefit from immigration. But most Americans do not. Our taxes go up, our jobs disappear and our children are pushed aside by colleges who want the legal and illegal immigrants because of the public money that goes with them. End it, don't mend it.
Ask the AT&T workers what they think about government immigration/H1B policies. Professional historians were reluctant to admit Michael Bellesiles had lied about his sources in Arming America until they were embarrassed into being not reluctant.
Sincerest apologies for being off topic, but I wondered if anyone saw the article on the lack of progress in Alzheimer's treatment. It was on the Instapundit website, and promotes the idea of a herd mentality in the Alzheimer Research field. I have watched for an answer since the seventies, and, after all this time, I too am in the camp, that the researchers have missed something key. Anyone? Maybe Dr Bliss would revisit this and bring us up to speed on the alternative theories.

Better yet, shut down the UN. "We have an implicit [but wrong] assumption that intelligence and rationality go together—or else why would we be so surprised when smart people do foolish things?"
"Smart doesn't mean wise" People in high IQ societies will be the first to tell you this. They've been around plenty of intelligent people in their lives and know what skills are not included under IQ. In basketball it's nice to be tall, but the tallest players are not always the best. I knew a psychologist who once told me her theory on the phenomenon of smart people inexplicably doing irrational and stupid things.
Everybody knows about Cupid: The little cherub who fires arrows at people who immediately become smitten with strong romantic feelings of desire. Well, her theory is that Cupid has a twin brother. And his name is Stupid. Fragile Notre Dame - I thought at first you were linking to another college snowflake piece.
History Without Truth - The 1619 Project has been thoroughly discredited, but many professional historians remain reluctant to criticize it.: Why I don't trust the NYT, no way, no how.
2019 Was Another One Of Those Tough Years For The "Experts": "Expert"; "Ex" and "spert" -- Ex, meaning "was" or "used to be"; spert, or spurt, "a drip under pressure". BREAKING: House Ethics Complaint Filed Against Rep. Omar: Oh, boy! LOOOOOOOOOOONG overdue! And a democrat put on his "big boy" pants to do it! I am amazed. Get Ready for a Nasty 2020 Presidential Campaign: The DEMS are ON IT!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!!!! (They've had 4 years to get ready.) "Fat Studies" is really "Obesity Studies." The pic with the story shows a morbidly obese woman...not your general 'overweight' american that might carry 20 or 40 pounds extra. We're talking "My 600 lb Life" type of fat people here.
I suppose we are just going back to the idea that morbid obesity = success like back in the good old days of Henry the 8th? I am not a fan of vaping. I don't smoke and have never smoked. But I'm not a fan of stupid government regulations either. It would appear that someone/group has convinced the government that flavored vaping is the devil's tool and if they just eliminate that then children won't want to vape. However I am under the impression that many/most adult vapers prefer the flavored vaping products and this regulation will harm them. But the key is that you can buy "pods" that can be used in the vaping pens (I think that's what some call them) and you can put whatever you want in them. They even have add on pods that use commercially available legal pods and add on a flavor pod to get the desired flavor. In other words, as usual, the new regulations will NOT stop teens from vaping WILL put more people at risk as they add their own concoction to the vaping AND as expected will only harm the law abiding adults. Is this really what government intended or are they really as stupid as they appear to be?
The transgender endgame is the continuation of the perverted heaven on earth cult that spends its time creating chaos and standing downstream of the taxpayer trough to collect the benefits of chaos.
as well as people who are too focused on their genitals are too busy to kill those that are busy raping and pillaging their own country's resources under the guise of "leadership".
Re the 1619 Project. If you recall in the 1970s the NYT was defending and apologizing for Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge when they murdered millions of people in Cambodia. The genocide in Cambodia didn't bother the NYT, but now we are supposed to believe they are distraught about slavery in Virginia in 1619. You know the old joke about hypocrites? Hypocrites are people that lie to themselves.
Two tribes aren’t recognized federally. Yet members won $500 million in minority contracts.
Buried 22 paragraphs into the article: "In a statement, the SBA said the Ma-Chis continue to qualify for minority contracts under its regulations because of its (the tribal organization's) state recognition in Alabama." Federal recognition or acknowledgement of a tribe indicates that the tribe is recognized as a sovereign government of a people and place for government to government relations. It is also one of the several ways that various federal laws determine "who is an indian" for purposes where that matters in federal laws and programs – if the feds acknowledge the tribe, and the tribe says you are a member by whatever criteria they use, then for some purposes you are an Indian. For other purposes that's not enough and percent of blood from your genealogy is also a criteria. For yet other purposes, blood quanta alone is fine, and for others, being a member of a state-recognized tribal organization is enough. The people in question claim to be descendants of Creek who escaped from the forced relocation to Oklahoma and remained in Alabama or nearby states and subsisted by blending-in with existing white-settler and free-African-American communities. In much of the 19th century if they were to be identified as "Indian" that would have subjected them to expulsion and many restrictions on property-ownership, intermarriage, and employment that existed in the racist laws of the time, so would not be entirely surprising that their families might not be "out" as people of Indian heritage until such heritage became cool around the 1970's, or that official documentation in historic county, church, and school records would not record them as "Indian" in post-expulsion decades. As a contrast, the descendants of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians are well documented and unquestionably of a tribe recognized by historic federal-government treaty and the state government of Michigan, but the tribe is also not-federally-recognized since the early 20th century expropriation of their land and destruction of their village. The LA Times started looking into abuse of state and federal minority-contracting programs thinking that they had a "gotcha" against Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) whose brother-in-law ran a company that had benefited from such programs. They've been continuing with a series of articles, using research by organizations that want the spoils for their own members and would benefit from such programs being more restrictive. But regardless of the wisdom and benefit (or lack thereof) of such programs, what they've uncovered in this case looks like people who are by law entitled-to-participate, participating. What was that statement in "1984"? Some animals are more equal than others. Perhaps it is past time to recognize tribes. Let them do whatever they like but get the government and the taxpayer out of it. Also deed their land to them. Give each tribal member a fee simple deed to their share of tribal lands and let them begin living like normal people and not "kept" people.
"All animals are Equal. Some are more Equal than others." is from Animal Farm, not 1984, but still Orwell.
The better analogy is that of the Inner Party, the Outer Party and the proletariat. All of these people who are being assured by the Clintons, Obamas, and Soroses of the world that they will be part of The Party when The Party comes to power will learn that their party membership is really just one more means by which those in the Inner Party control them. I think that is an astute observation. The Inner Party needs the Outer Party, but not any individual in it. They are replaceable. But people can be strung along for a lifetime believing that they are going to be one of the chosen few, any day now.
