We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

British Academic Wants To Ban The Insults "Nerd" And "Geek" As Hate Crimes" When our son now in his mid forties was in high school he was on the competitive intelligence team, the name of which escapes me now. The kids called the team "Nerd Bowl" when they went to competitions. No hate involved.

I was going to say that the MSM will characterize Hannity's accuracy something other than having to do with any skill or hard work on the part of his team, but that's actually fanciful because they will surely ignore Hannity, Solomon, Carter, et al. Just like they will ignore their obvious bias and thirst for peddling anything negative about Trump that was told to them as actual news. And just as they have continued to forget about all the lies Schiff has told for three years. And just as they have already forgotten that the Nunez memo was right and the Schiff memo was wrong (even though Nunez and Schiff had access to the same information).

There are no excuse for the MSM just like there are no Pulitzers for Solomon.

I honestly believe that the biggest impediment for "LIM" students is people like Al Sharpton, the NAACP and politicians and activists who keep the entire race baiting scheme alive and well. Imagine yourself a young "LIM" student with all the adults around you telling you that you can't succeed and it's not your fault and you need to hate this other racial group. You would grow up in that hate and reject any opportunities offered to you. It is a common phrase in the "LIM" community that you don't want to "act white". That is you don't want to study, do what society and the teachers expect of you and plan to succeed in life. After all, why would you because Al Sharpton and his ilk have convinced you that everyone hates you and he is working hard to get you more free stuff anyway so why work hard to succeed?

So the federal government just passed a bill that includes family leave for 2 million or so federal workers. My question is why? I do not understand the logic in this. Yes I understand the arguments for the free stuff but I don't understand family leave. The civil service work force gets ample vacation and sick leave why not use that instead of creating another freebie? And what about the unfairness of it; that is the family leave inequality! If only those who have children (or adopt or have some other qualifying family emergency) get the leave what about all of those who do not get it? Is that fair? Let's make it fair and every time anyone gets three months paid family leave that everyone of the federal workforce gets three months paid time off. An incredibly stupid idea you say? Yes I think so too and that is why I do not understand giving anyone paid family leave.

Well, it's at least something that the Intensive Partnerships for Effective Teaching initiative set measurable goals to evaluate success or failure by rather than the usual vague and subjective goals that allow them to say they've achieved some limited success but more time and more money are needed to really get things going. Nevertheless, there is that alarming bit at the end wherein they suggest that possible reasons the initiative failed was that it was flawed to begin with, or maybe it wasn't given enough time or enough support, they're not really sure why things didn't work out as they hoped. Which isn't much different than the usual excuse-making for why school taxes keep going up and your child gets good grades but is still illiterate.

And then they warn that maybe there's more resistance than you think to promoting "good" teachers by the "bad" teachers and that institutional goals may conflict with teaching goals (duh, you think?) and maybe the focus on teacher evaluation fails to focus on other factors than student outcome (it should, that's your whole raison d'etre) which suggests these people are the usual over-educated idiots with lots of theoretical knowledge and zero practical knowledge in the area of their "expertise".

So, let me get this straight--What Hannity and his guests been saying for three years is that a US presidential candidate laundered money through a law firm to pay the Russians for disinformation about her opponent. And that partisan elements in the FBI, knowing that the disinformation was paid for by a candidate and that it came from the Russians through a man the FBI no longer worked with because he was unreliable, and that the information was utterly baseless nonsense, still used it to help falsify an application for a FISA warrant which was then used as a back door way to spy on the campaign of the candidate who was the subject of the Russian disinformation. And that the victim of all these nefarious shenanigans was the one who ended up being investigated for working with the Russians and eventually impeached.

It sounds like a bad episode of Get Smart, like Mel Brooks and Buck Henry just decided to call it in that week.

No wonder the media won't do a mea culpa--they're covered by the fact that a great many people find it too hard to believe something this ridiculous could actually happen!

The only problem here is that Trump/GOP would undo most of the dysfunctional Democrat policies on the homeless. I doubt Gavin and the Democrats would agree with that. Gavin and the Democrats define "help" as "agree with whatever Democrats want to do and send us more money." We all know how "reaching across the aisle" works with Democrats: do it our (Democrat) way.

Nobody's educational plans work.

At the margin, teachers can help, and are even essential to get kids started knowing how to read. But past that, if the kids aren't smart enough to be educable, or interested in being educated, there seems to be little to be done about it. At least in our current state of knowledge.

One thing that is sure is that more money spent on it doesn't change outcomes over time.

Sometimes the truth is sad, but that doesn't make it untrue.
