You will be regarded as the problem if you do that. Many Scandinavians, especially those in positions of authority, are determined to take the stance that there is no real problem, everything is under control, all the negative reports are exaggerated. If you act otherwise you are a dangerous fanatic who should be watched more closely.

When we visited our son in Norway, some people would very quickly announce how much better Norway handles things than Americans do - but others would come up to us quietly and tell us complaints they did not think were wise to bring up in front of other Norwegians.

Does anyone remember Cowslip's Warren from Watership Down? That's what this is. No one dared state the obvious, or risk being shunned.

I just started Watership Down. I've never read it and figured it was about time. We are almost as bad - no one is reporting on this or the stabbings and acid attacks in London or the church fires/ looting in France. It will be a sad day when Tivoli is destroyed but not a surprising day. The cultural momentum seems like a perfect storm.

As with many fables of animals which are really meant to be instructive about people, you will find yourself referring to it for years after it, as the examples are simple and clear. I read it aloud twice to my sons, and one has gone on to read it multiple times since.

Plus, it's just a good story. Enjoy.

I absolutely refuse to pay for choosing seats. The last few times on cheap airlines they tried to get me to pay and I refused. If they want to seat my family apart, that's fine, I'm not pay hundreds more for that kind of extortion.

Many, many years ago, we were scheduled to visit Disneyland. As one did in those days, I phoned the airline to confirm we were still going a week before the flight. Got to the airport, and American Airlines said no reservation, despite out tickets. Got to the nearest payphone and was able to get confirmation we were indeed booked. Back to the check-in counter and, yes, we did have reservations, but couldn't seat all together. Two seats together, and three separate ones. I said fine, my husband and I will sit together and the three children can go in the other seats; and by the way, one gets airsick very easily so stick that child in the smoking section. It was surprising how quickly we were found a row to sit across.

Airline seats: The issue is that they charge to allow you to sit near your family. They didn't do this in the past. You could simply ask for seats next to each other without the extra charge. They also now charge for carry-on luggage. They charge for a soda or juice or snacks. Coming soon; pay toilets.

It is similar to how hotels now charge resort fees. Ironically I have had to pay these and never saw a resort (whatever that is). I think the common factor is that by hiding costs/fees they seduce you with a lower price and then hit you with the costs when you have no choice.

I'm generally in favor of a la carte pricing and transparency in general, but in practice this too often turns out to be a bait-and-switch.

The thing is, dishonesty in pricing, like opacity, never solves the long-term problem. It just degrades the seller's reputation and therefore his brand.

Caveat emptor folks. Customers have been getting hoodwinked since time, or at least people began. Especially by price quotes that are to good to be true.

Well for what it's worth I just got back from a round trip one two different airlines. In both cases my wife wanted to pre-reserve seats and I said lets see what we get. First trip we both got aisle seats across from each other and the person sitting beside me was willing and eager to trade for her aisle seat. In the second instance they put us together on both legs. So my estimate is that saved me about $100 by not reserving ahead of time.

The first airline didn't charge for a carry-on but the second one wanted $50 so we checked it instead for about the same price. Since it was the return home leg it wouldn't have mattered much if they lost it so by checking it I didn't have to schlep it around.

Smart Republicans would tee up a well-crafted bill to regulate airline charging schemes and to humanize what has become a painful farce for consumers - and then point out, on a daily basis through the holiday season, through multiple Representatives and Senators, that it isn't moving anywhere because Democrats are too busy chasing impeachment crack. Unfortunately, 'Smart Republicans' is a phrase with an interior fallacy.

So I'm watching Survivor and enjoying it less every season. It seems to have morphed into a high school girl bitch session. It really has nothing to do with "surviving" but it is now all about social interaction between bitches and normal people with fewer and fewer "normal" people. It is so scripted and Jeff spends his time "leading" the witness to get them to say something; anything to create drama.

TV producers do like their conflict drama, don't they? We always rather enjoy the Iron Chef cooking competitions for the spectacle of seeing talented chefs produce spectacular food under pressure in a very short time. As the show progressed, though, producers always let the camera increasingly dwell on boring behind-the-scenes interviews emphasizing the personal drama, the victory strategy some challenger chef was trying to employ in her life, silly gimmicks to crank up the atmosphere of unpredictable problems, the boo-hoo of "I coulda been a contender." There's not so much time left for the food techniques.

Ditto for car restoration shows. I'd like to see guys cleverly machining a part they're missing, or diagnosing a mysterious engine problem, or just generally demonstrating their superb craftsmanship in the upholstery or the paint job. Instead, over time they always start to focus on the inevitable drama of an arbitrary deadline and "Oh, no, will we get it done on time?" or some dreary personal spat.

Maybe that's why the impeachment hearings look like the Jerry Springer show.

Focusing only on the Obama/Biden aspect of this corruption, it's hard to imagine anything that is more damaging to the nation's reputation, its foreign policy, and its collective soul than this.

Our president and vice president (and his son at least) participated in stealing from the citizens of a struggling country for the personal gain of at least the vice president's son. This was happening at the same time they were under attack from a much stronger nation and in spite of a promise to assist in its defense because it gave up its nuclear weapons, the same president and vice president sent only blankets and MREs rather than leathal aid.

In other words, Ukraine was a piggy bank to them and their way of showing their appreciation was to screw them.

I agree. Apparently Pelosi, Kerry and Hillary were also stealing money or getting kickbacks from the Ukraine. Politics is a dirty business and the news/reporters are supposed to be rooting out that dirt. Where were they? They had to know the Biden, Kerry and Pelosi were doing this (Hillary too but in a different way). Why did they keep it secret? They eagerly printed lies about Nick Sandmann but they hid corruption at our highest level of government. Supposedly the 1st amendment gives the press (and all citizens too) freedom of speech exactly so that they can speak truth to power.
