We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Why is it people who use iphones drive cars and where clothes complain about Cultural appropriation? Shouldn't they be squatting in the dust with a spear looking for carrion or something. Also, when you watch the various TV shows that have "native Americans" hunting seals or whales etc. but use motor boats and hi-power rifles doesn't that qualify as Cultural appropriation and perhaps more importantly evading the law?

It feels good to hate Trump author. Nothing new about self anointed boors feeling entitled to foist their ideology on others, regardless of the appropriateness of the setting. Chevy Chase's church lady schtick emerged in the 80s, and Mencken mocked them before that, paraphrasing; a puritans greatest fear is that someone, somewhere might be having a good time.

As for the booing of DJT at the WS game, the Washington Post, itself, undermined the story but pointing out that it is not unusual for presidents to be booed at ball games and that Michelle Obama was booed at NASCAR.

"Hate speech" will only be used against the right and in particular white men. You remember when we created laws that added extra punishment if you committed a crime against someone because of their race or religion. Well literally tens of thousands of these crimes are committed against white people because they are white and NONE of them are ever treated as hate crimes. Why? Because the whole hate crime schtick was always itself a hate crime against whites.

Possibly because slavery seems to be the normal state of humankind, only gradually eliminated after 1500, starting in Northern Europe and the Anglosphere.

did you read the article? It makes the point that the USA was not founded upon racism partly because the key founding fathers wrote against slavery at one point or another.

GW might have written against it but he utilized a significant amount of slave labor until the time of his death.

Isn't that a bit like saying the current Democratic party was founded on tax evasion because I can come up with an early Democrat who was caught cheating on taxes? Or that Islam was founded on torture or misogyny? Or that the Civil Rights movement was founded on adultery? Movements aren't "founded" on every error that any member ever fell into. We should be more careful how we throw ideas around.

Which is worse, in your opinion: slavery or abortion? Many slaves in America were treated better than they would have been in their own culture had they never been sold into slavery. But every stinking baby who was aborted was killed and it never got better. So 50, 100 years from now will we be able to denigrate people who agreed with abortion? Will there ever be reparations paid for abortion? Will we be able to hate descendants of those who agreed with abortion?

My thought is "what the @#&! is she blind or stupid. The white's didn't run because nice black families moved in, they ran because the black families don't take care of their children or even their adults who commit robberies and rapes and commit race crimes against whites.

She also complained that after the whites left the schools and homes became a shambles. Well duh!

Talk about tone deaf. Does she have a clue as to why the quality of the schools and the homes in the community went downhill after they became majority black. Ask Walgreens in Baltimore and Ferguson why the quality of the infrastructure declines in majority black neighborhoods.

I always thought feeling hate towards someone was very corrosive for the hater. Hate eats a person up on the inside.

What is the psychological profile of a person that enjoys hating??
