Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sorry, VDH is way off base with the idea about "our bankrupt nomenklatura" ruining these fine institutions. Most of them were never respected at all and the rest merely needed the soapbox the internet provided to contrarian voices to expose the rot of the rest of them. Legacy media? The legacy media died at least back in the FDR era. It has provided nothing more than a composted "green" manure to grow the toxic PR wing of the progressive communist party.
VDH on maintaining the institutions...those institutions have been compromised by generations of "progressives" mandating tax credits and taxpayer contributions to the bottom line while the progressive termites hollowed out the purported goals and used them as weapons against everyone else. Every generation watched this crap happening and the uniparty approved the operation. How to deal with the above problems...MORE TRUMP RE: NYCity exporting homeless. A number of organizations do this and similar things surreptitiously. The various Hispanic groups move illegals to various cities and help them avoid detection. Black inner city churches move members to widespread smaller towns throughout the U.S. Various pro-immigrant groups move immigrants to random cities and settle them in and help them get welfare. I don't know that any of this is illegal it is just kept secret so that they can do it without someone looking over their shoulder. IMHO all cities should encourage the homeless to return to their home towns where they may get help from family members. If that takes giving them travel funds it would still be a win/win for everyone.
Unlike global warming, global cooling IS a serious problem if it is real. Its main two effects are expanding deserts (we're talking cold deserts, which are the worse kind) and reduced agricultural productive. By reduced I mean a decline of at least 40% and possibly half. This will have catastrophic consequences for much of the developing world's populations.
It's almost like we're reliving the entry into the Dark Ages, the late stage decline of the Roman empire and before the Christian religious empire became preeminent - when unnaturally cold weather caused famine at about the same time that society started acting out its own suicidal impulses. Makes you wonder what truly motivates these human impulses. I wonder what other parallels are there.
Hanson misses an important point and gets this wrong about the Boomers and respected institutions. It is better explained by O'Sullivan's Law: All organizations that are not actually right wing will over time become left wing.
also known as Conquest's Second Law of Politics: Any organization not explicitly and constitutionally right-wing will sooner or later become left-wing. They even use the same examples, though they add in the ACLU, the Girl Scouts, the Episcopal Church and others. Conquest's Third Law also may be in play here: The behavior of any bureaucratic organization can best be understood by assuming that it is controlled by a secret cabal of its enemies. It sounds merely cynically humorous at first, but a little contemplation reveals there is a lot of truth in it. Bureaucrats put their energy into preserving the bureaucracy, not preserving the original mission. And bureaucracy favors both oligarchy and leftism. I am thinking the Catholic Church fits your definition of a bureaucratic organization.
Given its age, it should be far worse. The Episcopal and Lutheran Churches got there in one-fourth the time.
Re: NY Times thinks it found the real enemy in al-Baghdadi raid: TRUMP
The Washington Post disagrees. Re: Impeachment pursuits began on the day Trump was inaugurated
Actually, talk of impeachment started before he was even nominated: https://dailycaller.com/2017/05/17/trump-impeachment-talk-started-before-he-was-even-nominated/ Excellence is forbidden: This is why we can't have nice things.
A Charter-School Leader Was Fired for Publicly Worrying about Academic Excellence: Because teaching all kids to be smart is clearly RAAAAAACISSSSSS.
Hunter Biden and his supporters: Methinks he (and they) doth protest too much. "They even use the same examples, though they add in the ACLU, the Girl Scouts, the Episcopal Church and others."
The ACLU was always leftwing. Remember, it was founded by a bunch of communists. If I recall correctly, the California legislature declared the ACLU a Communist front organization. You will notice that the ACLU doesn't want to defend all civil liberties only those that support their left wing agenda. I think that the ACLU is actually anti-America (i.e. is trying to bring about our downfall) and always has been. They are just like CAIR but without the religious zeal.
The problem with the homeless story is that it doesn't mention how they treat people who are already receiving Social Security. Millions of "homeless" people get anywhere from $800 to $1800 dollars a month; but they still claim to be homeless in order to qualify for free rent, food, and medical care.
There is no database which Social Workers can use to determine how much money a person is getting. Every homeless shelter in the country should have access to a website, where they can put in a person's Social Security Number, and get that information. We've got to stop all of the double-dipping. Black people are experts at this. So, you've been living successfully on $800/month, have you? Luxury, I'm sure. Those damn mentally ill people, always gouging the system eh?
When I patient is admitted I can usually find out how much he receives in SSI, SSD, FS, APTD, Medicare, Medicaid, and Section 8 Housing in about five minutes. It seldom changes what we do very much. I do not understand why they should get anything. I don't have a problem with their family or you or someone else giving them money or other assistance but I do think it is wrong morally and constitutionally to take it from me and others who earn it under the threat of violence and imprisonment and then just give it to them. And worse, perhaps, the system of rewards for their sloth only encourages more to choose that lifestyle making the problem much worse than it should be. Most people know that one of the greatest joys of life is work and the reward of being able to support your family and enjoy life. The welfare system denies people that opportunity. I know, I know; it is sold exactly the opposite, i.e. as though the welfare is intended to temporarily "help" them so they can get back on their feet. But in reality it makes them slaves. Our country is $2 trillion in debt, coincidently about the amount we have spent on welfare since the mid 60's. Our debt is going to bring this country to it's knees. It cannot be sustained, it cannot be paid off and when interests rates return to "normal" we won't even be able to make the payments on that debt. The economy will collapse and not recover for years. Why? Because welfare.
