We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A family-run seed company called Botanical Interests has various mixes that are tailored to help butterflies, hummingbirds, songbirds, and other beneficial species. On the plus side, the mixes do very well in germination and are a nice profusion of flowering non-hybrid wild varieties. I've had good luck with them, and they do seem to attract all the advertised creatures - and they look great in the beds, many of them re-seeding for the next year.
Were it not for a great single malt beverage I would be upset over the startling void of pollinators and yes even the Monarchs this year . I have huge wild pear trees that drop thousands of pears every year resulting in swarms that cause the ground to tremble in years past . This year I could count the buzzing insects on two hands . Monarchs on one ! Monsanto may have won in the Buckeye .
