We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Fantastic article! I've long argued that the Allies didn't win WWII, the Soviet Union won WWII and everybody else lost. Exchanging Hitler for Stalin was hardly any sort of "victory".

Yes, our totalitarian leaders just filtered off the major Nazis, brought them to the U.S. while scattering others to Russia (mostly scientists) and other sites around the world, and we are now reaping the "rewards" of such decisions as they have infiltrated every level of our government. Oh, and they got rid of a few million undesirables (population control) and glommed a bunch of natural resources while they were reorganizing the world scene.

The last privileges this group believes in are individual rights and the rule of law.

The American people don't like their wars to go more than 3 years, then they get antsy and just want it to be over. Leaders who want a war to continue after that have to spend a lot of political capital to keep things going. Consider Lincoln and the Copperheads; Johnson ramped up troops in 1965 and by 1968 there was a growing movement to leave; Bush had to go to the mat to get Congress to approve the Surge in 2006, and this was part of the Democrats winning big that year and not institutiong the regulations that Sununu and McCain were pushing for. We got out of Korea at about the 3-year mark. We didn't reach it and the issue didn't come up for WWI and 1812. WWII was an example of the same thing: We weren't really at war until well into 1942, and by 1945 there was little will to oppose the Soviets and keep going.

It may not just be Americans. It might be human nature but I only know the American examples.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. An alternative way of looking at it might be that Trump's backing off his tariff threat and not forcefully denouncing China's actions in Hong Kong makes him a paper tiger in the eyes of the Chinese. And I suspect that some of the same people who are praising Trump for his very stable genius tactics with regard to the tariff pause would also be praising Trump for his no-nonsense firmness had he stuck to the tariffs and issued a forceful threat against China's actions in Hong Kong.

(Lindsay Graham certainly would have - it only took Trump suggesting he'd support reasonable, common-sense gun laws to get Graham fully onboard with that. And if it turns out that Trump was merely suggesting he'd support new legislation while knowing full well he would find some excuse to continue to support new legislation in the abstract while opposing any particular proposal in the concrete, it's going to be funny watching Graham's flipping and flopping until it slowly and painfully dawns on him that his master doesn't actually support reasonable, common-sense gun control laws.)

I think Trump is smarter than that. There is no forceful threat against China's actions in Hong Kong, that's all a dream. It would make us look weaker to issue such a threat because it is meaningless and we have no intention to do anything about it. As for his backing off on Tariffs, that is a direct result of China's softening their bargaining position. That softening is the direct result of Trump's tariffs. In other words the art of the deal is working.

There are no "reasonable, common-sense gun control laws". They are all intended to harm and criminalize innocent and honest gun owners. They will do nothing to stop dishonest and evil people from getting guns. This is not about saving lives and never was it is about oppressive laws against citizens. The left are socialist/communists and like all socialist/communists through out history they MUST take the citizens guns before they can implement their socialist/communist agenda.

Some of the biggest political gains for the left, have always come when a Republican is in the White House.

Red Flag sounds so reasonable on the surface. Who could be against a lunatic possessing a gun! Who gets to decide who is mentally unstable? I would really like to know how many sessions with a psychologist would it take for the good doctor to put his career on the line, and declare me fit to own a gun. It would never happen.

I no longer care what the consequences are, I will vote third party if Trump goes along with 'reasonable' gun control legislation. I have contacted Trump about this, but really, I am one voice. Red Flag is the beginning of the end anyway, let's roll! (now mark it in my folder, that I have exhibited extreme bouts of paranoia)

Reading this article: (HT Ace of Spades HQ) Red Flag Laws in the Age of Political Psychiatry, got me to thinking, what if the approved therapist, for getting your firearms back, must be a State approved person?

I'm learning about the many gun laws, that the shooter in Philadelphia violated. Which new laws would have stopped him? Do you think the authorities are going to Red Flag the criminals in the hood, in any of the high crime areas?

Why? I am 100% in support of the 2nd amendment but voting third party is so self defeating I would choose something else, something that might actually benefit my goals. Trump is the only person on the ticket who supports the 2nd amendment so to throw away your vote and thus put in a rabid anti-2nd amendment president is ludicrous.

The problem with "Common Sense" gun laws is that the common sense leaves the process as soon as it's signed into law, and it becomes subject to the Selective Enforcement process. Then the same hate-shaming group that got your Twitter account frozen and got you banned from Facebook and dropped by your web host and maybe even compromised your job, brings your "Racist-Xenophobic-Homophobic-Mysogynistic-White Supremacist" ass to the attention of a sympathetic local prosecutor or sheriff - out of a deep abiding concern for your 'wellness'. Because you hold conservative views - and guns - and therefore you're not well.

I get more spooked when political groups exaggerate the nice-sounding language to sell something. It is often a signal that the reality is an opposite. Common Sense would be a good example. The "Peace and Justice Act of 2021" is something I know I am going to be against without having to know a word of what's inside it.

1. The indoctrination and Title IX madness on college campuses will continue until the money dries up and they are forced to change in order to survive. It's a little like the Global Warming Industry, the camel's nose has made it under the tent and into the salad bar - if you want the camel to go away, you'll have to take away the salad and not be nice about it. Leftist progressives have learned the value of organization and consistency of effort: These scams depend on the general public forgetting their mission follow-through after they write their Congressman. You have to organize a campaign to harass your elected/appointed officials and be ruthless until you're successful, and keep your own alumni checkbook firmly shut.

2. I can't wait until all those college graduates with no quality-of-writing-or-thinking engineering degrees start designing medical and aeronautical equipment. Working for, let's say, Boeing or something. Oh, wait.

The tragic outcome for Poland would have been the same no matter what course of action their leaders chose.

The article concludes that Poland should have ceded Danzig to Germany and allowed German transportation infrastructure to be built to connect Germany with Danzig.

That course of action would have bought some time, I think, but I suspect we would have seen a replay of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, with the Germans coming back and demanding larger chunks of Poland, likely partitioning it with the USSR in the end anyway.

Had they forged an alliance with Hitler, he would have staged his armies on Polish soil when he invaded the Soviet Union, and Poland would have been destroyed anyway as the Red Army advanced on Germany.

Had they allied with Russia, they would have been overrun by Germany when they went to war with the Soviet Union.

At the end of the day, Poland would have disappeared and been trampled under the German-USSR fight.

Poland's fate was sealed thanks to their geographical location.
