Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re the mass shootings
Rush had some interesting comments yesterday. RUSH: I know how you feel, folks. Look, I felt the same way you do. You hear about these shootings, and you dread the next day. . . . The Drive-By Media and the Democrat Party spent the whole weekend fundraising, criticizing, blaming. You don’t even want to have to play the game, but you have to, because you’re under assault. You get up every day minding your own business. You’ve got to defend. The Democrats… I mean, it looks like they are happy when these things happen, and that grates on me. The media looks like they’re happy, ’cause they think this finally is gonna beat Trump. “Finally, something’s happened that’s gonna beat Trump!” So they get all revved up about it. They blame Trump. They blame white people. They overlook the results of their own words, their own behavior, their own policies. They overlook a very important fact that these shooters — these kids — have all been indoctrinated by public schools they run! These kids, these young men have been told what? That they’re scourging of the planet. They are white men! They’re white men. What are they? They are serial abusers. Many of them are rapists. They engage in white supremacy. They are availing themselves of white privilege. They are routinely shamed and criticized because they’re white and because they are males. They then are isolated by technology. They are presented the illusion of having social interactions, but they never meet anybody they’re talking to — and half the people they’re talking to (if not more) are lying to them about how fun-filled and exciting their own lives are, when it’s really a convention of the miserable. Their parents have been removed as influencers. They’ve been told their parents are reprobates. Their parents have destroyed the planet. Their parents are careless. Their parents are this or that. They’re scared to death over global warming, scared to death over climate change. There may not even be a reason to live, because there isn’t gonna be a planet in 20 to 30 years. And then we all act surprised they act like this? . . . These people have no idea the poison that they are inflicting in this society with their own hatred — and, man, if you ask me, they own it. https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2019/08/05/i-dread-these-days-because-the-lefts-attacks-are-always-the-same/ QUOTE: Donald Trump Is Right to Call for Red-Flag Laws No he isn't. If a person is a danger with a gun, they are a danger without a gun as well. So why are we only targeting guns? Why not just lock up people who are "red flagged"? Why don't we take away their social media accounts and TVs and newspaper subscriptions? Those items are more likely contributors to a "red flagged" person's instability than possessing a gun. The reason they won't talk about locking up a person who appears to be unstable is because it's not about mental illness; they want to be able to confiscate guns on demand. This is the camel's nose pushing under the tent. Ken, you are exactly right. The way Colorado’s Red-Flag is written, the way it has been explained to me, they come search your house, remove the guns, but not you. You’re free to go about your business. How many guns are they looking for? What if they are looking for three and only find two, or one? What if they don’t find any? What happens then? I don’t know. I don’t think they do either. What a day it will be for you though. You have no idea who called for you to be flagged. You don’t even no about the situation until the knock on your door, perhaps they kick it in at 3am.
In a couple weeks, maybe a month, you finally get a hearing in front of a judge. It may not even be the judge the flagged you. It’s not clear to me that you get a chance to face your accuser. To get your firearms back, you have to prove that you are mentally stable. Can someone tell me how you do that? If you do prove you are stable, you pay to get your firearms back. What the condition of them will be is anyone’s guess. What if the storage ruins a precious antique? Are you compensated? Yeah, sure you will be. This is a very dangerous road we are heading down. You have to pay and pay to prove you are innocent. The maxim, innocent until proven guilty, has been a part of western legal thought since the 14th century. Written into American law since 1894, Coffin vs US*. The UN wrote it into the Declaration of Human Rights, 1948. We should not allow this legal maxim to be thrown under the bus because of, what statistically is on the decline, and can be solved with other means. Means that don’t require all of us to give up are rights as free human beings. *Legal History Sources indeed. The left will just red-flag you for not being a union member, for having an American flag on your house, for wearing a MAGA hat, for being a registered conservative voter, for being heterosexual, for being white, for being male.
Call for Red Flag laws...No thanks, it is wide open to abuse just as "swatting" is used to harass people. It should be evident to all that most of the shooters are far less than stable before they commit shooter crimes. Address the mental problems that have accelerated ever since the lawyers got the institutionalized back on the streets in the 70's. Should these same people be able to drive, fly on a airplane, be allowed around children and a host of other restrictions? Why is it always handy to restrict guns? Why not restrict university professors?
re The Case for Ending Income Tax Itemization of Deductions
Of course that runs smack up against Congress's desire to play social engineer with the tax code and grant tax favors to moneyed interests. Ain't gonna happen. This year we used the new standard deduction and got a lot more than if we'd itemized.
Of course, due to some foolishness last year I still had to pay out the wazoo, but I was expecting that. This year, we'll be in much better shape. The Russia Hoax link goes to a page of Maggie’s stats.

But wait, here comes the Green New Deal Modernity was nice while it lasted. Unfortunately named given the efforts to overturn it. QUOTE: 27:21 Stephen Davies: Those are all features of capitalism. Now, that means that capitalism is a central feature of modernity, and I think the evidence of the last 100 years is that you can’t have a non-capitalist form of modernity. We’ve had several gos at doing that, and none of them have worked. The evidence means to me that capitalism or the capitalist way of organizing a market economy is, so far, at any rate, an essential feature of the modern world, and it’s the form that the dynamism and innovation it takes in the economic sphere. --Free Thoughts Podcast, "How Did the Western World Get Rich? (with Stephen Davies)"... 41:39 Stephen Davies: Yes, I do. The thing is that, as you say, we take all the benefits we have in this modern world for granted. We assume it is just natural that we should live in a world where to lose a child or to lose a parent or a sibling before you reach 21 is something shocking and exceptional, when in fact that’s the normal historical experience until well into the 19th century, and until recently for most of the world. And because we take it for granted, we tend to think that the wealth we have and the effects it has are just like the rain, we can just do things with it, and that’s a very dangerous attitude. Because if you’re not very, very careful, you can find that you’ve killed the goose that’s laid the golden eggs basically, and you’ve fallen off the elevator of modernity and you’re back into the world of our ancestors. And that’s why… As you say, one of my central messages is do not take this for granted, realize how incredibly fortunate you are to be alive now and not living the life that most of your ancestors did, and understand why you’re so fortunate because that will give you an idea of what you shouldn’t do. “Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
