Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Trump To Address Nation Monday Over Mass Shootings, Says More Gun Control May Be Needed
The article is pretty vague about what Trump has in mind in re gun control. I think Trump loses more voters than he gains with such a stance. "Why not ban gasoline? "
Amsterdam beat them to that one. They've decided to ban fossil fuel powered vehicles from 2025, gradually banning more and more until by 2030 none will be allowed to enter the city. I wonder if anyone on the Amsterdam city council realises this will mean the port of Amsterdam will need to close and it will become impossible to supply all the miriad stores, including the ones selling food, all around the city. Famine incoming... I wonder what happens to emergency vehicles. When you call for an ambulance or other emergency vehicle, are you going to be told "sorry our ambulance just returned from a call and must be plugged in for the next two hours. Hope you can wait."
Old Lady I agree with Scott Adams who said on his podcast yesterday that it’s not accurate to pick one thing to blame these mass shootings on. (Funny how those same people always go straight to politics for their one reason - probably says more about them than anybody else.)
Although the leading factor, the one that tips the scales to action from fantasy, looks like mental illness to me. But still - several factors. One thing I've seen over the years is that SSRI usage (either being on it them or coming off them) is a very common factor in these incidents.
But I don't have solid data on that. And as you say, there's a multitude of factors. I don't have the exact stats either, but as I recall from my reading all but ONE of these shooters were on, or coming off of SSRIs.
What they never tell you about SSRIs is how they have been shown to increase aggression in the individuals taking them; a fact well-known to trial lawyers suing the Big Pharma producers and winning big settlements! No drug company wants to take these cases to trial! They would lose badly and very loudly in public! Virtually all are settled quietly with tough non-disclosure requirements. And what's with every one of these damned near-illiterate clowns developing a sudden literary skill for writing "manifestos" or in earlier cases "diaries"??? Who keeps diaries other than teen-aged girls?? I'm sure the teachers of these perps would swear it was tough to get them to write a coherent sentence in HS English class, let alone a manifesto! Something is truly "ROTTEN" in all this. It smells like "Deep State" to me. Agree with both JLawson and TG especially on the SSRIs — I’ve heard all the same things.
Almost nobody - in the media, in politics, in society - is all that interested in correctly defining the true problems here. They’d rather come up with a solution in search of a problem. My late neighbor who was part of some "special services" during WWII and, then later, the FBI told me about a series of programs run by the CIA starting in the 1950s to study the effects of biochemicals and mental manipulation on one's ability to think logically. Most of the time, the subjects weren't aware they were under such programs. The ones he knew about were Project MKNAOMI and ARTICHOKE, part of MKULTRA, but who knows how many others there were and where such efforts have gone since then.
Given the weaponization of the CIA, DOJ and FBI that we are now hearing about from whistleblowers, nothing would surprise me. So much for the Land of the Free; you just have to be very Brave. The problem with this theory is that it is backwards. It is like looking at the ice on the pond and noticing how cold it is and deciding that the ice causes the cold instead of the other way around. Think about it! They are on SSIR for a reason. They have a mental illness, they are likely to do strange things. Some of them did strange things with guns (some use cars, hammers, fists, bombs, knives, etc.). The drugs didn't cause their problems their problems caused the drugs (to be prescribed).

Some minority of those taking SSRIs show suicidal tendencies (this one folks know more about) and/or violent tendencies (this one few people know about).
That’s the point here. SSRIs make some people violent who weren’t violent before. Yes I hear what you are saying, but that does not make it true. Some people began taking these medicines when they were 12 or 13 but quit when they were 18 and could make their own choices. In other words at puberty the problem tends to become obvious and they get medication. Then they sleepwalk through their teens with little problem but when they are old enough to choose not to take the drugs and are coincidently mature enough to act out their crazy thoughts the lack of the drug allows them to do exactly that. Had they never been put on drugs they would have followed a more typical track of getting into worse and worse social difficulties until they finally were brought into the justice system on a serious issue but not mass murder.
It is not the drugs that cause the problem. The people are sick/broken and cannot be fixed. The drug merely masks the problem until that day when the drugs are no longer taken or skiped occasionally.

"In place of gendered pronouns, E. uses the plural 'they.' It must have taken some effort to sound this stupid.
[…] As for the idiocy surrounding the use of 'they' as singular, you will note that E is forced to use plural verb forms, as in 'they are,' as opposed to 'they is.'" Sorry, but Schneiderman doesn't actually know what he's talking about. There's nothing particularly wrong with singular they per se; it's been in English for quite a few centuries now. Where this "E." person he mentions has clearly gone astray is in attempting to push singular they as a specific "gender-neutral" singular pronoun. That's a bound well beyond its normal usage, which is limited to standing in for sex-irrelevant terms like anybody, everyone, a doctor or a person (e.g., Has everybody finished their lunch? and A good doctor will always give their patients the best medical advice). A small group of ideologues is pushing this use (shamefully, they include persons claiming to be "linguists"). However, in the English-speaking population as a whole, I am just not hearing its use at all. It is not "catching on" - except with a particular group of "usual suspects". Natural Gas?? Use UNnatural gas! It's much better for zombies.
JJM, E is the person who wrote to Ms. Hax. Blame "her". The El Paso shooter was a left wing Democrat who hated Trump and sounded like the 20 Democrat presidential candidates. It is the worst kind of politics to blame any of this on Trump or honest gun owners.
Understand that there is a faction in American politics that really wants to disarm honest Americans. History tells us there is only one reason to do this and that is to make it easier for an oppressive government to rule over their citizens/serfs. Beware those who would tell you that banning guns will stop these crimes. The people who commit these mass murders have already broken numerous laws to do it and a additional gun law won't stop them. You are being played by the far left. I may be late to the party with this observation, but over the years it has become increasingly obvious to me that Progressive leftists want to rebuild cities to accommodate the comparatively prosperous, urbane, cosmopolitan, and educated class they believe themselves to be a part of, and not the people who actually live in them.
That implies some good intent on the part of the left. I don't think that is the case. I suspect that if you listed the top 100 cities run by Democrats and with a significant minority population that you would find that the politicians that run it are dishonest and stealing from the treasury. THAT is why they want to run the city and the state and the country. Not to make it better as they see "better" but to use corruption to enrich themselves. This works best in an environment where most/all of the politicians are corrupt AND where there is so much mayhem going on that there is a constant diversion of attention away from what the politicians are getting away with.
Most of the Democrats in congress and many of the Republicans too are doing exactly this. That is why they ran for office and why they retire as millionaires. Sadly I think that 100% of the black caucus is corrupt. AOC staff under FBI investigation...don't be surprised if Pelosi is behind that just to help shut up AOC.
Mentally ill shooters...the legal establishment managed to empty the asylums back in the 70's, hard to say if the lawyers or the asylum dwellers need "institutionalization" the most. Nothing can save the large cities...too much corruption, dwindling tax base, and too many parasitic dwellers. Gun control...forget it, there is no longer any discipline among the people. Drugs, abortion, divorce, envy and coveting reign. It's people, not guns. Re: Bad Grammar Makes You Sound Stupid
Interesting to note that, from the actual title of the piece, it's not that bad grammar makes you sound stupid but that bad grammar does in fact make you stupid. Which point is not very well developed in the piece but I would agree that "bad" grammar as opposed to "poor" grammar* does make you stupid. Given that grammar is simply the rules of language that we agree to in order to facilitate clarity in communication, deliberately using grammar that hinders clarity and communication is stupid. I might even suggest that using what amounts to a foreign language is simply virtue signaling, a way of separating the in-the-know sophisticates from the ignorant unwashed. To that end, this silly bad grammar is deliberately designed to keep the ignorant ignorant. *Bad grammar is deliberately using poor grammar, poor grammar might be a typo or a slip of the tongue or just because you don't know any better. Bad grammar is stupid, poor grammar is ignorance. And ignorance is not knowing something (and we are all ignorant on an infinity of subjects), stupidity is the inability to remedy one's ignorance. How often is it that when a professional athlete is interviewed on TV that it is painful and embarrassing to listen to them. They can only repeat certain talking points and even that is done poorly. The do in fact sound stupid. They studied English in the hood and even after attending college they sound like sub 80 IQ grade school dropouts.
Bad Grammar Makes you Sound Stupid. Lack of proofreading and misuse of the apostrophe make you look stupid. Both are rampant, even among professional writers.
Mifsud doesn't exist. It's a persona of a professional con artist. The "Mifsud" personality was used to set up fake schools, which then tricked gullible Eastern European students to send him money only to find out the school was a sham.
Malta academic in Trump probe has history of vanishing acts 7 killed, 53 injured in a mass shooting the MSM won't cover.
https://www.weaselzippers.us/428217-seven-killed-53-injured-in-chicago-shootings-over-the-weekend/ Why won't they cover it? Because it was black supremacist who did it. Because it happened in a Democrat controlled city with tight gun control. Because an assault rifle wasn't used. Because it can't be used to vilify the Republicans. Because Chicago is a major ratline for drugs and guns, and it has been for decades. The shoot-'em-up over the last weekend was as most -- the rival gangs retaliating for some member infringing on another's territory (18th and Kildare is an intersection dividing two rivals and both tend to party down there late at night) or interrupting a deal going down. Retaliation is a YUGE problem, which gets worse when the black, Latin, Chinese and other ethnic groups live too close together. Open borders have consequences.
What amazes me is 1) the young mothers who will bring their toddlers out to these midnight functions, 2) the older males who have not organized to stop this idiocy. The Jesse Jacksons, Father Phlegers and "Slim" Colemans must make a ton of money off of these continuing battles. They simply demand their media coverage to air their grievances against "the cops" who try to intervene, so the LEOs no longer care to risk their lives. |
