Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

$16 billion in Baltimore? That's the material cost for a quarter mile of new road, two dozen repaired potholes and a half-mile of new sidewalk.
Plus labor. Yeah, there was a LOT of labor involved in 'distributing' that much money. Giving up "custody" of an adult? Nearly all college students are over 18... That's not exactly a scam... it's just weird. How did they get custody in the first place? Psychiatric commitment?
Legal maneuver so that the parent's income is not considered in the kid's financial aid application.
And why should it be? I genuinely do not understand what a parent's income or resources have to do with an adult's continuing education. If you or I go to school this fall, will our parents be required to submit an application?
Again, how can they give up custody of someone they don't have custody of in the first place? any system with known rules can be gamed. Now what would be interesting is if we cross-referenced the parents who putatively gave up custody of these children with their tax returns which then should not have allowed them to claim them as dependents.
This seems to me to be nothing more than the younger sister of the dodge I remember from my childhood, where 42 teachers and 29 cops in a nearby city were all apparently sharing the same one-bedroom apartment due to residency requirements. Actually, this requirement can go on for quite a few years (I'm in Canada), as it is presumed that parents with a higher net or taxable income (they're not always the same) are presumed to be able to provide support for the offsprings. The problem with this is - as a family member pointed out - that this looks at the prior year tax return only. A family who has struggled for many years and finally had a couple of really good years (financially speaking) would be disqualified; a family who had slightly lower income but steady over many years - and probably in a much better position financially to help the offsprings - would qualify for grants.
Still remember one offspring who, on high school graduation, said quite frankly that could not have made it through without spouse and I being together as a family. However, should we instantly split, said offspring would be able to tap into a lot more free financial aid. We declined to so do; offspring did extremely well on own. Ref: civil war Yada yada
There is a certain irony in that MoveOn. Org started as a movement to go past the Clinton impeachment and get back to business, Now THEY are the ones who just won't let go Pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale has been a family favourite around here ever since we first spent a summer holiday in Tuscany.
Wild boars are not a species, boars are male pigs only. They are many times more sows than boars so the problem is wild hogs, not boars. The meat is very rare and lean, more like beef than pork and very good eating.
I understand that it is a very stinky process to dress them out and harvest the meat? Much worse than game such as deer and elk.
Boars stink and the meat is rank. Nobody kills boars for the meat, they are not tasty and the cooking smell will drive you outside in a hurry. We trap the boars as young as possible, then castrate them. At that point, they become "Bar hogs" and will grow up faster and with no smell. The sows don't smell at all. Plenty of people will shoot boars and just let them rot. They are a terrible nuisance wherever they are. They also are not "man killers," but will always run away if you let them.
We usually would keep wild hogs if they were less than about 50 lb. The meat is lean and delectable, especially when smoked. In my experience, both boars and sows can become rank and inedible when they get large. And yes, they are a terrible destructive nuisance to any biosphere the inhabit.
As far as running away: Well.....I disagree. And anyone who has come up on a wild hog and heard them click their tusks for a last-minute honing knows they better start looking around for a climbable tree, quick. Their eyesight is poor and this makes them both paranoid and short-tempered. We trap them, keep all the sows and some of the boars up to 150 pounds. Castrating boars even that size is a real fight but we do it. The smell is usually gone in a month or so. As far as sows stinking I've never experienced it. We just butchered the last of 7 and she was pushing 200 pounds. Smelled fine.
I've come up on dozens of big wild hogs, day and night, I've slapped them on the nose, kicked them in the belly and caught them by the ears. They all run. The only one that ever cut me me weighed about 15 pounds.

The author of the piece is obviously an idiot, or is trying to work in the obligatory sop to the leftist agenda.
He says,"the wild boar does well in just about any environment, from semi-arid plains to alpine forests and marshy grasslands. . . . we are bumping up against the limits of urbanisation. This is a crisis we have largely inflicted on ourselves. City sprawl is driving the species out of its dwindling natural habitats and forcing it to live alongside us." Got that? While they can thrive over large sections of the globe, we have somehow overly encroached on their range. Of course urban sprawl has long been frowned upon by lefties as well as the notion that people and the environment are incompatible. Therefore the author takes the opportunity to scold us. I am surprised this article missed a reference to global warming, but then again perhaps I missed it? I am sooo tired of left wing politics being injected into virtually every story. However, the larger points of the story are true. Wild hogs, are smart, they are voracious eaters (they are virtually 4 legged roto tillers), and prolific. Nobody has yet figured out how to bring their population under control. I did not know that they were moving into cities, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Raccoons, coyotes and opossums have done the same. The Left would rather slander Trump than fix Baltimore: It's easier and doesn't cost money.
Erdogan: ‘Whoever Is On the Side of Israel…We Are Against Them’ Of course they are! Erdogan: ‘Whoever Is On the Side of Israel…We Are Against Them’ The Palis will never miss a chance to miss a chance. Will they ever learn? No; learning is forbidden. OK, so the Bachelorette is finally over. Three weeks ago she threw out bachelor #4 because he said he wouldn't have sex with here before marriage AND if she had sex with the other contestants in the fantasy suite he would walk away. She was outraged of course and the entire female audience agreed that who she had sex with was here business. So after humiliating him on TV for an hour or so and all the females in the audience nodding and applauding in approval his purgatory was done and he was persona non grata and left. Fast forward to Monday and she choose Bachelor #1 and the happy couple were seen blissfully engaged. But then tragedy strikes and People magazine prints that her engaged had a girlfriend before the show began and he had told her he loved her. Hmmmm! So he was thrown to the dogs for not prostrating himself and apologizing quite enough and also spent an hour or so in live TV purgatory before being summarily dispatched to the nodding approval of about 100 women in the audience. Bring in the back up bachelor #2.
But I'm wondering if she can have sex with half a dozen or so of the contestants and be righteously angry at one of the runners up for his insistence that she should not have sex if she still wished to consider him for marriage. THEN she gets righteously angry at the winner of her affections because he had sex before they even met... Well, I'm confused. Towards the end when the come one come all fantasy suite begins she is dating half a dozen guys is SHE cheating on them??? I realize that is the format of the show but if she is cheating publicly on all of them and throws out the winner because of something that happened before they even met what am I missing??? And why was bachelor #4 wrong (I know he did a lot of stupid stuff in the previous weeks but that was all scripted for the sake of ratings) when he objected to her bed hopping? I'm guessing you have to be a millennial feminist to understand it all. Rich Midwesterners have figured out how to scam "the system"? The college system?! Hahahaha! Y'mean like Massholes have figured out how to distribute millions of dollars worth of real estate to heirs in order to cry poormouth and receive subsidized housing in their golden years? Like megabuck agribiz exists on farm subsidies? Like Elon Musk and Warren Buffet? Please tell me why this is shocking news.
California just passed a law to force Trump to release his tax returns or else he cannot get on the state ballot. Obviously this is intended to get his tax returns in Democrat hands so they can search for something to nail him on. But why just Trump? Why not every politician at federal, state and local level? Why not?
As a counterpoint Obama had the congress pass a law sealing his records. That was really really odd. Never happened before in history. What did Obama need to hide? Who got him into the prestigious schools? Was he even in those schools? Who was his rich mentor? Where was he months at a time when he disappeared from public view? The list is long and I haven't even touched his fake birth certificate. |
