We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. This president is often gratuitously uncouth in public, and almost unrecognizable to those who know him as a congenial, courteous, and charming man and a fine raconteur. These traits are less frequently in evidence than in earlier days.


Like all of us, the President gets better at his job the longer he holds it. But this would be an easy problem to correct, and that would leave the intense disparagement of Mr. Trump exclusively to the extremists and the decayed servitors he has served the country admirably by driving from office.

I have yet to see President Trump "gratuitously uncouth" , he speaks the truth effectively which these propagandists do not like. They must get their talking points from fake news without ever really witnessing President Trump actually speaking.

Trump is a little different than most politicians BUT he is far more polite when on the attack. Go back and look at the things Dems have said while pushing for their own in elections or at congressional hearings when a Republican was in the hot seat. By comparison Trump is an angel.

I think that TDS is more about policy, effectiveness and his willingness to defend himself. The left loved McCain until McCain ran for president then they said terrible things about him. McCain didn't respond to his critics on the left but did lash out against Trump. If Jesus were to appear today and ran for president as a Republican the left would call him a racist and every other vile name they could. What this is really about is winning at any cost.

It just boils down to the fact that D's can say anything they want, and will IMMEDIATELY scream about anything that they can possibly construe to be 'offensive'.

There isn't any R that could possibly satisfy their purity demands - which is the point. It's always about finding something to be offended by, as the McCain and Romney campaigns showed.

Both of you look up what Trump said about Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz's wife.

I think Trump is often misquoted, taken out of context, criticised unfairly, and is insulted more than he insults. But let's not get crazy and pretend that he's just "different," or is not really insulting.

A pro-Cruz PAC ran ad targeting Melania so Trump went after Heidi. Trump admitted he made a mistake.

Trump fights back. Usually when he does the media the pundits and even many Republicans want him to apologize. IMHO one of the things conservatives dislike most about Republican politicians is that they apologize. I think Trump is typical of a New Yorker in this and I understand why it doesn't play as well outside of NYCity. But It would be a huge mistake for Trump to change, or begin apologizing all the time or to not be himself. I still say that he is far more polite when on the attack than Democrats are.

Today the Baltimore Sun had an article on president Trump's tweets and they said they were not going to call him names and then proceeded to call him about a dozen names. You have to wonder if they are pathological liars or they have Alzheimer's.

If the Baltimore Sun, a local news organization, presumably staffed by local people, really cared about the city they inhabit they would address the facts that Trump stated. Instead they circle the wagons around their guy Cummings.

US healthcare system...keep government out of managing the health care business. Give stipends or tax credits to those who can buy what serves them best. The education system would be much improved if the same thing was done...keep government out and provide a stipend or tax credit to allow parents to send kids to their choice of schooling rather than the nanny governments idea of schooling. Socialists/totalitarians are not pro choice.

Hate to tell Mr Sanders, but there are a lot of Canadians who head south of the border because our "free" healthcare is seriously rationed. Have heard there are health facilities in Missoula, MT, which cater to Canadians who aren't willing to wait for "elective" procedures - mostly those involving orthopedic surgery where Canadian protocol seemingly requires one to be completely gibbled up and barely mobile before one is scheduled - several months down the road - for surgery.

The real reason you see so many Chick-fil-A restaurants: I DON'T see many. The nearest one that I know of is roughly an hour away, and it's the ONLY one I know of. (I'm out in the boonies.)

When tree planting actually damages ecosystems.

I can think of two examples of trees/shrubs damaging ecosystems, but they are NOT examples of deliberate tree planting. Rather, they are spontaneous nature reactions to human use of agricultural land.

The Texas hill country was overgrazed in the 19th century. Result: filled with shrubs and trees- basically mesquite and cedar. Meet the visionary who restored 5,500 acres of wrecked Texas land to paradise.

In Cuba, the shrub marabú took over about a fifth of Cuban agricultural land- land that had once produced sugar, but had been abandoned. Some of marabú is now being sold as charcoal, but I doubt that constitutes much of that land now infested with marabú.

In the 40s and 50s, the USDA decided it would be a good idea to plant cedars on the plains for windbreaks. Trouble was, the birds scattered the seeds, and now they grow like weeds everywhere. Some pastures have been pretty much rendered useless by the multitude of trees growing on the property.

Our government masters . . . sigh . . .

Or the attempts to stop forest fires which, by resulting in the accumulation of undergrowth, resulted in much larger forest fires when they occurred.

Note that the AEI list doesn't just include economics, but also attempts at government applications of science, such as cobras in Delhi pollution abatement in Mexico City, and fishing quotas.
A further example would be Mao's campaign to kill sparrows, because they ate grain. Turned out that as sparrows also ate insects, grain production went down. This jumped out at me from why the left hates Trump:

He declined a formal contest of the election, even though President Eisenhower urged him to do it and promised Nixon that Ike’s wealthy friend would pay for it.

As you all know, Eisenhower's last speech was about the Military industrial Complex and why it was a problem. What is not so well-known is that Eisenhower really did try to counter JFK's "missel-gap" hype. But the media refused to cover it. I suspect this is the reason why Eisenhower wanted Nixon to formally contest the election.

Trump got these Democrat and media idiots to defend RATS.

Medicare for all:
I have Medicare. I paid into it for 43 years before I became eligible to use it. Once I became eligible to use it they began deducting about 10% of my retirement income to pay for it. When I actually use it I must pay 20% of all charges for medical services. I suspect that when Bernie or Kamala push for Medicare for all that what they really mean is to destroy the existing Medicare and replace it with a single payer plan. Somehow I doubt that any of the new beneficiaries will be required to contribute for 43 before they can use it, have 10% of their income deducted to pay for it or even pay 20% of the actual bills.
