We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
That's exactly right: The Ramones tapped into the same silliness of the simple early Beach Boys songs, the aggressively dumb lyrics, the 1-4-5 structure, the relentless beat. I still love them.
I like music. I sometimes pay attention to the lyrics. But for the most part it is just sound that is pleasant and I could care less who sings/plays it or what they think or do. Often when I like a song I tend to like most of the songs that singer/group does. I don't go to concerts or venues for music. I have a couple of times and they are expensive uncomfortable disappointments. I can appreciate a great voice, like Whitney Houston or Elvis Pressley but I don't honor or respect them simply because they can sing. It's just music.
I’m a lurker here and at other, select sites. I rarely comment but have to jump in on this one.
The Beach Boys were symbolic of a time and place, kinda like “old” Jimmy Buffett was/is for where I grew up.
They hit a nerve that’s long gone but still remembered.
FYI-the intro to fly casting here at Maggie’s Farm was better than what Orvis has to offer and that’s impressive.
Back to dodging hurricanes on the upper Gulf Coast.

Nice to see another Gulf Coaster around these parts. Sometimes you need something light, and dare I say, silly. Shoot, there's enough heaviness and artists who take themselves serious as it is.
Last thing I remember listening to at a beach was Hand of Doom by Black Sabbath.
I like the Beach Boys too though. Good Vibrations is brilliant. My hipster friends always loved Pet Sounds. Very good too, but I get a bit bored with it after a while.
If liking lyrics makes me an elitist in this populist age, so be it. I don't ask for much, but they were below any reasonable standard 9 songs out of 10. "Kokomo" may be their second-worst song, BTW.
I owned a "best of" Beach Boys album and played it occasionally, as part of my children's cultural education. My oldest son, about to turn 40, is a fan. It's my fault. I also bought "Wild Honey," because of Good Vibrations, which was a mistake, because that album is just plain terrible.
Stunning harmonies, tinny, thin voices, teenage lyrics. The rest of you contributed to our cultural deterioration by encouraging California culture in this way. I'm blaming the Bill Clinton election on you directly.

I'm guessing you didn't enjoy "Gidget Goes Hawaii" either. But I agree with you about the straight line to Bill Clinton.
Never been a huge fan, but there are 3 or 4 Beach Boys songs that I really like and I do appreciate their place in history and the genius of Brian Wilson.
By far my favorite songs are Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Surfer Girl, and God Only Knows.
