Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sexist air conditioning
I would argue that it is sexist against men to require them to wear ties and suits, when women can wear far more comfortable items. Fortunately my employer long moved on the more comfortable standards (for both genders). Dignitary safety--I guess that's a danger to one's dignity? We have an old term for that: lèse-majesté.
As for the age of majority, we're really getting confused about when kids are kids. We're treating them randomly as fully adult or permanently childish, depending on the circumstances. We want 13-year-olds to have access to abortions, and we're a little wobbly on when adults can have sex with them. They should be able to vote as soon as they're legally protected against being aborted themselves, which happens at some age between birth and puberty, who knows when. But they can't smoke or bear arms until they're 35, if ever. Apparently there's no age at which they're responsible for guarding their own dignity without help from the nanny state. Williams College rejects free-speech principles to protect ‘dignitary safety’ of students..."Dignitary safety"? That's a good one. Have you seen dignity?
One of my favorite "dignity" examples comes from Hugo Chávez. Chávez:"Vayanse al carajo, yanquis de mierda" Aquí hay un pueblo digno. Tr.: "Go to hell, shitty Yankees. Here we have people with dignity." Hugo Chávez, in this rant, doesn't quite exude dignity, doesn't he? While Chávez wasn't very dignified, he was an outstanding improvisational speaker who could hold the attention of his supporters. Though I suspect that after the first hour, a lot turned him off , out of exhaustion. I get bored with any speaker after an hour. I also appreciated that he didn't speak in a Maracaibo/Maracucho accent, so that I could understand him. AOC is news, just like any train wreck, forest fire. earthquake, car wreck. It is unusual, extra-ordinary, weird. So we slow down to gawk and stare wondering how THAT happened.

Police state Yes. And there is nothing we can do about it. As the cliche goes, the genie is out of the bottle. Blind fold goats airdropped..... Shades of WKRP Thanksgiving turkeys.
QUOTE: "The relocations began last year, following a years-long stretch of planning and public comment, with 115 of the roughly 725 mountain goats in the Olympics being moved to the Cascades." Your tax dollars at work. Years of planning and a personal airlift after careful sedation by a team of biologists. All for 700 aggressive-nuisance goats, one of which killed a hiker. Have they addressed goat reparations yet? Or the permanent improvement of goat sanctuary parklands? Free health care and winter feeding for life? Noticeably absent: The unit cost per goat of this fiasco. Juxtaposed against the cost of 725 high velocity bullets or better yet, the revenue generated from 725 special hunting licenses. Not to mention The Goats can't just walk across I-5 back to where they were? Wouldn't be surprised to hear they shoot ones that try to be repeat return.
I hiked up Mt. Ellinor back in late 80's, early 90's. My companion said we might see mountain goats. Near the summit, they were everywhere, and quite aggressive. A big male stood right in front of us, I asked my friend what he wants, He said, " Trail Mix". I didn't have any. A friend of mine had almost died after being gorged in the femoral artery by a domestic male goat. Beautiful animals, and amazingly sure footed on anything, but from a distance. Hikers beware. My friend was gorged in Ybor city, almost next to an emergency room. I was hours from any medical help. Nature ain't a Theme Park.
There was a time in human history when children who hit puberty were considered adults who were expected to pull their weight. The "teens" were a 20th century invention. I don't recommend going back to the old ways, especially given the emotional and mental maturity of today's teens, but this business of treating them like children until they're in their twenties is ridiculous, and frankly dangerous. When I had to deal with graduate students in college, I was amazed at how many of them (even into their thirties) who were still dependent on Mama.

We've entered the Age of Kakistocracy, rule by the worst. New Orleans rebuilt after Katrina. Billions and billions of our tax dollars spent on that. Why didn't they move to higher ground?? Anyway a little tropical storm has put over a foot of water in the streets, state of emergency is declared. Why? Because of the $$
It was a stupid decision to rebuild (most of) New Orleans. They should have moved it. Having children and grand children I recognize the problem of setting the age of maturity. I am in favor of age 18 except for alcohol at age 21. The problem is we coddle our kids and many are simply unprepared to be adults. Conversely even before age 18 most children have decided to stop obeying their parent's rules anyway and an argument could be made that even 18 is too late and 16 might be better. Perhaps a compromise might be that a child reaches the age of majority at age 18 but if they exercise any of those rights before 18 but from age 16 on that they child has legally assumed that responsibility with no recourse.
