Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

According to this article - https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-japan-usa-idUSKCN1TD0RJ - Japan wants to keep buying Iranian oil, so it wouldn't make sense for Iran to attack these specific tankers. Wouldn't be surprised if any other nation engaged in a little tit-for-tat after the previous attacks which was widely attributed to Iran.
When the media reports on "torpedo attacks" you know they are just mindlessly repeating what some spin doctor spoon fed them. The spin by Pompeo is a bit blatant too. But anyone depending on main stream media for any sort of analysis, yeah right. "Why Japanese ships? "
You can't use logic and reason to explain terrorist acts. The evidence is overwhelming that it was in fact the Iranians who placed the mines on these ships. This is literally an act of war. 500 years of the law of the sea show this to be an act of war. A blatant and intentional act of war. What do you think will happen next??? "You were supposed to target anything BUT Japanese tankers! It said so in the instructions!"
"I have them right here! LOOK FOR YOURSELF!" Reads.... "Well, damn. How'd THAT mistake get by?" It is always nice to notice that the other side has their share of incompetents as well.
Enjoyed the Haidt video- first time I'd heard of him. Good data. Scary but hopeful data. Good Gravy we are turning our kids into veal. I think Gen X might be the first generation where men "suddenly and unexpectedly" suffer significantly from osteoporosis. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20190610-how-modern-life-is-transforming-the-human-skeleton Already they can't open jars.
Oberlin news - so much winning! Haidt has become every conservative's favorite liberal. His social psychology research is increasingly unwelcome among liberals, but conservatives get what he is driving at immediately. We have great hopes he will come around, but even if not - he's an honest man.
I recommend his work on moral foundations. Thanks AVI, will look into that. I don't believe he's an independent. He was still clearly rooting / signaling for team liberal. It won't save him if they decide to blackball him. I noticed he referenced Taleb a few times. I was aware of Black Swan but sounds like there's more goodies to check out.
Wow. I did watch a 2008 Ted Talk for a summary of his 5 moral foundations and found it illuminating. It seems to me he's missing what's really fascinating but maybe 10 years later he's picked up on it. Liberals may not think Purity, Authority and In Group matter to them and that fairness and harm matter more, but it's obvious the former 3 matter to them tremendously. Are we not in a punishment/ shaming cycle to drive all of this "new morality" in a coup by the new rival for dominant in group? What's really going on is an epic fight for a transition of who is the authority, who is the dominant in group and what is dictated as pure .. religious. Liberals are not scattered heretics, they are a cohesive and sizable group. How radical change in norms is done and whether it will be at all successful in the long term, if the new norms win out, is much more interesting. I suspect what he really measured was liberals dissatisfaction with norms of the dominant culture - in other words driving force. Conservatives are in balance with the 5 primal forces of cohesive civilization and liberals are out of balance with all 5. I think he hasn't gone deep enough although he talks about stepping out of the moral matrix, he has some clear blind spots for his team. He reminds me of American white liberals that claim they have "no culture at all". Shockingly unobservant. We are so steeped in our culture, such auto pilot experts that we might only recognize by encountering someone from a different culture and seeing the deltas. Unless the observation is interpreted as "they have a culture and I don't" (sigh). That said, would like to see his definition of morality. He assumed we were all on the same page in the TED talk. I agree he's found some of what JP would call "religious level" or pre-verbal drivers but is it morality? Maybe, maybe not. He has found some driving forces for societal cohesion when in balance and change / chaos when out of balance. Would like to see his definition and reasoning process for calling it morality. That would be interesting, and maybe ring true. If he drilled that deep. Drilling into that level isn't easy and it probably requires visual metaphor interpretation. JP could do it. I suspect comic books and Marvel movies have a lot of that info as low hanging fruit. As an aside, Trump seems to understand the punishment for cooperation thing innately. Good lead. Expect Haidt will be a good read. Thanks again. Ted talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs41JrnGaxc
Do Gibson's employees have a case to sue Oberlin? They lost their jobs and income. IF not, why not?
Bill Nye the Science Guy sez:
1) Gender is all in your mind. 2) Race is all in your mind. 3) Kids should totally be exposed to group sex. Oberlin College Anyone notice the involvement of faculty in organizing and directing these protests against the bakery? Are these really of 'student' origination?
The college administration argued hard, particularly in press releases, that it was all the students, and they couldn't be held responsible to control the kids, and so on. Unfortunately for them, there was lots of evidence of direct involvement by school officials and faculty. Whether admin likes it or not, the jury believed that evidence. And the jury was furious.
Did anyone notice? The jury awarded 50% over the maximum punitive damages allowed by law. I feel sure they are aware that this can be reduced by the judge back to its maximum amount as legally prescribed (i.e. double the compensatory damages). I think it's safe to say they noticed Oberlin's disgraceful participation in the matter. And they were also made aware of the mass email that Oberlin sent out to their alumni after the first judgment, which was criticized the jury for their ruling. Hooray for the normal people sitting on juries. Now let's see how many normal people Oberlin has in their governance and alumni donor class. There are a few deans and professors who shouldn't let the door hit them in the ass, because a boot is already there.
From what I read, the 200% cap is not absolute, but it's also rarely escaped. So the jury expressed its very strong judgment, perhaps knowing that anything above $22MM was likely to get shaved down, but hedging its bets anyway. Just to make the message a little more emphatic.
I've also read that the $11MM in financial damages to the bakery for lost profits might rest on slightly shaky evidence. If Oberlin managed to preserve error on that evidentiary issue, it will be trying to whittle down the core $11MM damages, which will have the automatic effect of reducing the cap on punitive damages. Here's hoping Oberlin's tone-deaf, arrogant defense failed to preserve error and will crash and burn on appeal. Everyone knows that Stephanopoulos is a political hack, hit man for the left. Anyone giving him an interview knows that he will set them up with a question that no matter how they answer it the left wing talking heads will use it to attack them. True to form he did and Trump gave him an honest answer rather than a typical duplicitous left wing politician answer. Within hours all the MSM left wing stooges were saying the same thing ands accusing Trump of Treason. But as anyone could have predicted, now examples of literally all left wing politicians doing exactly what they believe amounted to treason when Trump said he would do it are surfacing. Trump literally said he would listen to a Norwegian if they had something to tell them while all the left wing politicians are being outed for actually colluding with communists. But... neither of these acts is illegal ! It is likely that before this is over every left wing politician will be shown to have colluded with foreign powers and yet the Trump team has been proven to not have colluded. The irony!
I thought the Clinton campaign - foreign agent link was going to be just another conservative journalist keeping the fire alive by repeating the obvious, and was pleased to see that it was Lindsay Graham instead. He played this well, and including the video from the confirmation hearing was a nice touch. It is the necessary evidence that he is not just being partisan, but recognizes this as a serious issue that should not be ignored.
Why aren't MSM reps outraged that Clinton bought oppo research from foreign agents? Why are they now outraged that Trump suggested he'd take oppo dirt from foreigners? Why don't the press appear to see any parallel between the two cases?
Is this a trick question? I just did a search on ABC News(?) “DNC hired Steele” Not one story showed. It is more than likely that people who get their ‘news’ from the MSN, have know idea about the truth of this. If they know anything at all about it, they probably believe it is deplorable propaganda, made up by Trump and his brain dead, racist, followers.
Before the 2016 election, my sister managed to remain completely unaware of any investigations into Clinton's transgressions. The most she would say was that she'd heard someone out there was trying to investigate Clinton, again, same old same old, and she couldn't be bothered to find out what it was about--Benghazi? emails? Whatever. The news sources she deigns to read wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole; she occasionally hears a rumor from a source that's already sneering at is as debunked. It's not so much a story about anything Clinton did wrong as one more story about what delusion those crazy conservatives are on about this month.
Have you noticed that the journalists will change what you said i.e. lie, and then attack you for what you never said?
QUOTE: THR states that Zendaya (Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman) had “been searching for a reputation-busting role that would signal her transition from Disney Channel to adult actress.” Well, she seems to be rushing right past mainstream/mature actress. I suppose no one told her what "adult actress" implies. Why Japanese ships? Because the Japanese Prime Minister is in Tehran trying to get the Iranians to play nice with the U.S.
WHERE IS THE STORY? HELLO? Where is the ongoing story about the murders (assassinations?) of two state politicians--one in ARKANSAS the other right next door in OK? WHERE IS THE MEDIA ON THIS?
