We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Good point, feeblemind, and I think it has to do with different values for the word "believe." It has been noted for years - decades, even - that liberals define morality much more in terms of community action (or even just posturing) versus individual integrity. Hence their outrage at Donald Trump, who is only slightly below the average* for a Democratic politician in terms of personal behavior - and better recently - being a Republican candidate. Ignoring sexual coarseness and sweetheart deals is supposed to be their territory, and how dare we? So they were already divided in mind between what one actually does in life - flying in jets, having affairs, leaking information to our enemies and overlooking their stealing our stuff - versus what one adopts as a political branding. The divide has increased over the years. You might think it should be impossible to be that thoroughly hypocritical. It is at first, sure. But you get used to it, and eventually one's personal life and political life are countries that no longer even have direct flights between them. They rail against the rich even as they become wealthy and are now the party of the rich.
*For liberals reading, I mostly mean the most prominent Democrats. Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank. Chris Dodd. Kamala Harris, Bill Clinton - probably Hillary too, John Edwards.
