Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Democrats Claim ‘Constitutional Crisis,’ Media Repeat It 386 Times
Isn't this the definition of the "echo chamber" the Gang of Z used to accuse us of listening to? Has the Gang of Z committed mass suicide, or just crawled back under their rock? Haven't seen any postings by them for some time.

The Z-Team has done some commenting in recent weeks at
Bookworm Room, though her new Moderation Policy may have done away with the Z-Team- though her new policy was primarily done to get rid of a commenter more toxic than the Z-Team. Some years ago, Book blocked the Z-Team, but years later he came back. mudbug: Isn't this the definition of the "echo chamber" the Gang of Z used to accuse us of listening to?
It's an echo, but an echo chamber implies a closed system. People become so used to only hearing certain views, they consider contrary voices to be extraordinary and extremist, even when quite ordinary, reacting accordingly. Good luck in the echochamber. Sam L: Haven't seen any postings by them for some time. Excessive trolling was reducing the value of the forum. Even though we could block most trolls, it wasn't fair to other readers. Finally, they misappropriated our nick, which our scribes had trouble blocking. It seems to be stuck on auto-repeat. Isn't that the exact wording we saw last week? Max Headroom comes to mind.
In the early 60s our English teacher required us to read books like 1984 and Animal Farm. We were all appalled at the thought of a society living under those conditions, although those living in the Soviet Union were probably living in somewhat similar conditions and we didn't realize it. Now the Democrat party is pushing it on the American people and many seem to think it is a good idea. How twisted things have become in this country.
Back when I was in school, the most obvious thing to us was the government surveillance, but there were other, more dangerous things that were missed..notably Newspeak
Words were controlled, meanings changed so that forbidden ideas were removed from the language. "Free speech" has become equated to Nazi propaganda so that if you publicly defend free speech, you are by definition a Nazi. Supporting color blind racial equality is now the 'mark of the racist'. Using the words normal, or family, or man or woman is now suspect. Meanwhile segregated 'safe spaces' are the new thing, even preferring classic art or literature has become a mark of the 'extreme right' These new speak definitions are quickly becoming the norm. If you use the words by their normal historic meaning, you are outcast. There is an enemy upon the land. The enemy repeats falsehoods, uses deception and out right lies, for the purpose of turning the people against the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It masks itself as news. It is broadcast 24 hours a day in every major airport of the country and into millions of homes. This is CNN.
There was/is a constitutional crisis. The Obama administration weaponized our federal departments to try to reverse a election and install a failed presidential candidate. It went on for over two years and today the entire Democrat party is in full aggressive coverup mode and in fact trying to reboot the coup. The only thing that can correct this is a full investigation, jail time for the perps and throwing the worst of the Democrats out of office. Honestly I do not think we will do that and that bodes ill for our future.
Ref Coup & constitutional crisis
This is not over. Notice the extreme vehemence and denial when the great 'hope' Mueller failed to deliver what they wanted. Wait till top Dems are caught in indictments or convictions.... The result will be complete defiance, descending possibly into violence. The worst is yet to come,. re Trapped Nebraska farmer cuts off leg with pen knife
It wasn't me. Augers are incredibly dangerous. Limbs fingers, feet and hands have been lost in them for decades. Augers are now fitted with safety guards but these cause trash (pieces of cornstalks and corncobs) or lumps of spoiled grain to bridge over the auger and impede/stop the flow of grain. Thus they are often removed. One should never enter a bin with moving grain, all alone. To do so invites what happened to this unfortunate farmer. My grandad told the story of a relative who was up working on top of a windmill and got his arm caught in the gears of the mill. He had to cut his arm off as it was only attached by the tendons and then climb down the windmill tower. Those are horrific stories. I’ve worked around machine tools all my life, always worry about losing a finger. Worst I have done is run my finger into a grinder wheel, just lost skin. Be carful out there!
A guy at my HS cut his arm off at the elbow after being trapped in a car wreck.
High School Shop, I guess you might call it welding 101. I didn’t witness it, but the whole school knew about it: Kid was cleaning up his welding space. He used the oxygen to blow off the workbench, and himself. He went outside and lit up his cigarette, (days when you could smoke right outside certain areas) well he burnt himself pretty badly.
Around '69, a fellow wrapped his foot up in a PTO shaft at our farm. Protective shields were just coming into use. Maybe he was one of the reasons.
Somehow he got free, minus his foot, and crawled to his pickup (good thing it was an automatic), to drive up to the house. He's still around today. Any time he stops in, we talk about it with the current younger people in the workforce. It started out below the knee, but over the years infection took the knee too. It was bad enough, but what he says is worse was becoming a junkie for painkillers. We can call them accidents, but actually their more acts of inattention. As I like to say This isn't broken because you were doing your job well. re 1984 Turns 70-Years-Old In A World That Looks A Lot Like The Book
One wonders what Orwell would think? Would he be surprised at what has happened to the West or did he expect it? ‘This Came Very Close to Being the First Successful Coup’ in U.S. History
What part of 'Kennedy Assassination' does he not understand? Are you suggesting LBJ wanted power so desperately, that he would set in motion events to take out a president? I wouldn’t put it past him.
I think it unlikely - but if it hadn't been for Kennedy's assassination, I doubt we would have made it to the Moon. The plans would have been quietly shelved, with the money needed for 'more pressing matters here on Earth.'
While studying economics, I remember the multiplier effect; a dollar of government spending multiples its effect on the economy. I don’t always think that is true, but the endeavor to reach the moon, certainly did. The technology advances alone could fill a book. Then we can discuss the material advances. So many things had to be invented to reach the moon. What a marvelous achievement!

Now we are talking alternate timelines if Kennedy lives, and you can make an alternate time line do what you want. I think we still would have gone to the moon because we had to beat the Russians. The nation was behind the space program and it was a source of national pride.
What I wonder is if we would have had all the Great Society legislation had Kennedy lived and LBJ never become president?

I'm thinking it would have been severely reduced, if not eliminated outright.
Whether that's for good or ill depends on your perspective...
