Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Something going on with the site this morning. It won't load all the way and when it does it opens a page called Spreadly.com which states that the domain name is for sale. Clicking any of the links gets me a 429 error.
I was only able to get to the comments by quickly clicking before I could be redirected. Spread.ly (( supposedly, the .ly ending is for Libya ))
So it's not MY browser that's the problem. Have been trying to cure this for two days. Only happens on my machine with Firefox, not with Chrome > Yeah, I've had problems on my desktop for about 10 days now but I could get by. This morning I'm redirected on Firefox and I.E. so it's not on my end. IPad is the only thing that will load the site.
I'm having this trouble too. IPad with Chrome gives the page for a few seconds then goes to Spread.ly. Been like this for a couple days. BUT, just tried with Bravo browser and it works fine. For now anyway.
read history, all railroads used to be private, saw a need and figured it out, it's called capitalism. railroads paid property tax on every mile of rail right of way and on all terminal property plus uncle sucker levied huge taxes on top of that. Airports and roads are built with tax money and pay no property taxes, Ever wonder what killed passenger rail service, government, who then worked to put them out of business too boot. So government took it over and ran it into the ground like usual. Ayn Rand at its best
My impression was that the Federal government, working at first through various states, both provided the vast bulk of the lands used for the railroad right-of-way (plus lands adjacent that could be sold off) and that the government issued bonds to fund the construction.
There were bits and extensions that were fully privately funded, but as i recall none of the 4 transcontinental railroads was without large sections built with federal aid. Don't miss the point. There was vast tracts of land given to the railroads. The land was essentially worthless and the federal government owned a crap ton of this worthless land. What made it valuable was the presence of the railroad. So what the government gave the builders of the railroad was an incentive not funding. It only gained value once the builders built the railroad. The point that the government is unable to run a railroad is true and important to understanding how we have succeeded and become the largest economy in the world.
QUOTE: So what the government gave the builders of the railroad was an incentive not funding. Plus tons of money up front that wouldn't need to be fully repaid until the 20th century, at below-market interest rates -- and government guarantee of interest payments on the private bonds issued by the Union and Central pacific railroads. The Union Pacific alone was funded by the federal government to the tune of $100 million 1862 dollars, about $2.5 billion in today's dollars. Note that I am not arguing for-or-against anyone's argument, I'm just pointing out that a detail in a comment was not actually true. I don't doubt that the government put some cash/dollars into the pot to get the railroads built. I do doubt it was $100 million. Do you have a citation for this? I'm not being argumentative I would like to learn the facts.

It seems that I misinterpreted the wikipedia article on the Credit Mobilier scandal where it said "The federal government in 1864–1868 had authorized and chartered the Union Pacific Railroad and provided it with capital of $100 million to complete a transcontinental line west from the Missouri River to the Pacific coast."
They allowed the company to issue stock shares "valued" in sum at $100 million (100,000 shares of $1000 each), the actual cash from bonds provided to UPRR is a bit hard to pin down. In 1897 it was reported that the total owed to the federal government by UP for then outstanding 1st mortgage bonds was $54,731,000 (https://www.jstor.org/stable/1883646 p 436) and if you add up just the "per mile" issuance of the government bonds accounting for terrain you get a little more then $28 million.

As an FYI, worth noting the story about the student expelled for saying "I disagree" is satire...
Types of Eclipses: VERY funny!
Harris's Apron: Been hanging in the closet. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Trump’s policies are doing the exact opposite of what Democrats warned : Why, that evil, EVIL MAN!!!!1111!!!!! (Dems are dumb.) Beast: Trump doesn't understand economics: So, how did he get so rich? Trump WANTS to be impeached: Dems Minds Messed BIG TIME. Democrats really don’t have any sense of irony, or shame. Here we just went through two years of investigating every molecule that could be linked to Trump, including his children, and now Schiff says an actual crooked deal involving Biden and his son, is off limits? Schiff is only confirming what many of us already know, there are two sets of rules in this country, one for Republicans and one for Democrats. Justice isn’t blind, it is heavily weighted based on your power, influence, and how much gold you have.
Pretty funny tweet storm about Kamala Harris's Big Cooking Adventure! Surprised no one tweeted back that for Mother's Day her husband and kids ought to be treating her by doing the cooking - unless, of course, that is the normal way of things in their house.
Just wanted to say thank you for the link to IMAO.US
It's an honor to be included. Bird Dog - out of curiosity, how did you come across my article?
