Exactly so. The "gains" were, for the most part, smoke and mirrors. Consider health care. The "misiones" were, with the assistance of Cuban "physicians," supposed to bring health care to the under-served. Or at least Chavista propaganda told us so.

The gold standards for assessing health care systems are Infant Mortality Rate and Life Expectancy. If there were great improvements in health care during Chavismo, one would expect those improvements to show in Life Expectancy and Infant Mortality.

They don't. While there were improvements in Venezuela's Infant Mortality Rate and Life Expectancy from 1998-2013, those improvements lagged behind other countries in Latin America. When Chavez was elected in 1998, Venezuela ranked 6th in Latin America in both Infant Mortality Rate and Life Expectancy. When Chavez died in 2013, Venezuela ranked 12th out of 20. In percentage reduction of Infant Mortality Rate from 1998-2013, Venezuela ranked 19th out of 20 in Latin America.

Similarly, Venezuela went from ranking 9th in Life Expectancy in Latin America in 1998, to 12th in 2013.

And now Cuba is rationing food, ostensibly because the U.S. resumed economic sanctions (and therefore hoarders!), but actually because Cuba never recovered from the shock of losing its fix of massively subsidized oil from Venezuela. I guess it's important to consolidate the gains in Cuba, too.

When Chávez was elected in 1998, Venezuelan oil was selling for about $11/BBL. When he died in 2013, Venezuelan oil was selling for about $100/BBL. Even with the oil export revenue bonanza from 1999-2013 of around $750 billion in current dollars, Chavismo’s record on economic growth is pathetic- anemic- near the bottom of the barrel. From 1998-2013, Venezuela’s increase in per capita income was 15%, compared to 44% for the World at this time. See the table below.

South Africa will end up in a vicious and racist war and become the classic shithole country it was always destined to become. It is like Detroit on steroids but without the rich federal government to bail them out. Between the two problems of ultra low IQ and tribal cultural tendencies it is impossible for them to survive. The ONLY thing that has been holding them together since the end of apartheid has been the whites who remained there and now it would appear that we are about to see full scale genocide of those whites (because of the tribal culture thing which for shorthand we will simply call racism). Those blacks remaining do not between them all have enough intelligence/knowledge to keep even the basic systems running. They won't even be able to grow enough food to keep from starving. When TSHTF and it becomes total chaos I fully expect our leaders and talking heads to blame this too on white South Africans (who by then will be dead, enslaved or have moved to Australia).

By the way Nelson Mandela was no hero, he was a murderer and a terrorist who killed blacks and whites indiscriminately and NOT because of apartheid but because of tribal cultural reasons. And his wife was worse then him. They killed because they hated, simple as that. Not to make their nation better and not to counter racism but because they were racists.
