We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Modern medical care

One of my daughters Ubered to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center yesterday afternoon with sharp abdominal pain and a mild fever. Appendicitis, unless ruled out.


Of course, it was appendicitis. Three or four hours later they took the disgusting thing out laparoscopically and sent her home in an Uber a couple of hours later.  No stitches, just a couple of steri-strips.


Amazing world we live in.

And, a very good thing that they got her out of there ASAP - hospitals are loaded with disgusting germs, that can KILL you.
The sooner you can leave, the better.

"Lap Appy's" are fun. I've been blessed to have been able to experience the move from the 5 inch McBurney Incision and a week in the hospital...to the one inch "mini" incision and a couple of days in the hospital... to the laparoscopic appendectomy and - usually - an overnight stay to shake off the anesthesia and be sure the patient is eating. Your daughter must be made of the right stuff!!

I started doing lap appys about 1992 and had one kid take his video to kindergarten to share, I video taped all my laparoscopy cases. I kept the tapes for a month to be sure no problems arose and then offered the tapes to the patients. The lap appy tape created a bit of a sensation in the Laguna Beach community. About a third of the patients wanted the tape.

I had a ruptured appendix in 1965. Emergency surgery, 3 days in intensive care, another 2 weeks in the hospital and my summer ruined. I wasn’t allowed to do anything other than sit on the beach and wade in the water while all the other guys made sure to let me know how much fun they were having.

Ruptured is another matter. Best to get it out before that catstrophe occurs.
