I think the Cambodian people were sold down the river by their own King Sihanouk, who aligned himself with Pol Pot. The people thought if the king was joining the side of the Khmer Rouge, they must be ok. But to this day you won't hear criticism of the former king (and you would be stupid to open your mouth and do that), because of the respected place the royal family still has.

Although the Vietnamese and Khmer (and the Thais) have been rivals and enemies for centuries, I don't fault Vietnam on this one. Pol Pot in his delusions of grandeur had already announced he was going to invade Vietnam and had already made incursions; Vietnam was fully justified in initiating a counter-strike. Invading Cambodia in response also got Vietnam in an extremely nasty short war with China. Vietnam did Cambodia a big favor by removing Pol Pot; the paranoid Rouge were on the way to killing off the country's entire population. Remember that the median age in Cambodia today is something like 35, because many of the older people have been killed. The Cambodian people in general are very nice; I like them.
