We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Part 1 of Kenneth Clark's BBC Civilization series. My favorite line: "These buildings are not wigwams." This series was a big hit when I was young.
Included in this section are Vikings, Celts, Christian history, how the cross became a Christian symbol around the year 1000, the Moslem invasions of Europe, Charlemagne, and art. Years ago, we traveled to Skellig Michael partly inspired by Clark.
A commenter says "I shudder to imagine what a 2017 remake of a series about Western Civilisation would be like."
"Civilization" couldn't be made today, except to celebrate Incas (without mentioning the blood sacrifices), Islam (without mentioning aggression against Christians and lack of any significant contributions to the world since about the time Columbus discovered America, ect. It would unintentionally a farce.
Climbing Skellig Michael will always be one of the high lights of my life. I just wish we were able to spend more time at the top. My cardiologist was hesitant about my trying to climb all those steps but I was determined to complete the trek. My spouse is afraid of heights so that was an interesting part of the climb and descent. Going down many steps on you fanny is not an easy task according to my spouse.
Great stuff, thanks for posting. 9 minutes in he talks about civilization having confidence. Our elites do not have that anymore and they are upset that middle America still does.
