We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
On a related, but different topic. A B-24 bomber named "Lady Be Good" went missing for 15 years after its first and only mission 4 April 1943. In 1958, an oil search team found the wreckage in the Libyan Desert. Tragically, the inexperienced crew missed the African coast on their return from their unsuccessful bombing mission, and flew on, in the dark, into the desert.
Thinking they were still over water, the crew bailed out and landed, instead of into the Mediterranean Sea, in the desert. The survivors joined up, and with little more than a canteen of water, headed north, thinking their base and safety were about 100 miles away. Instead they were 400 miles south of safety. Remarkably, despite the extremely harsh conditions, five crew members made it 80 miles (the experts thought they'd make it only 30 miles), and one intrepid gunner treked 109 miles. Eight of the nine man crew's remains were located.
A made for TV movie (with a B-25 filling in for the B-24) called "Sole Survivor" aired during the 60's. I believe there was also a "Twilight Zone" episode based on this tragedy.
