We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Good news for those who like vigorous hiking in the northeastern US

Breakneck Ridge is open again after a year of trail repairs. Stunning views, sore legs maybe. Definitely worth a drive. On weekends, go early in the morning to avoid the crowds of Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.  BTW, there is a Dunkin about a mile from the parking, and a great pizza joint in Cromwell.


Mount Washington (Tuckerman's) is great too, but Breakneck is a much shorter hike, just a few hours up to the old fire tower and back down.  Mt. W is far more demanding of stamina.

Also, on weekends, Metro North Railroad (Hudson Line) has a "whistle stop" between the regular stations of Cold Spring and Beacon for Breakneck Ridge hikers:

If one does take the train; be sure to ask the conductor which car you have to ride in because only one car opens its doors at this stop.

Mt Washington trails really require a full day of reasonable weather because of all the hiking time above the tree line. Of all the hikes in New England I don't recall any with markers of the dead vs so many on Mt Washington. It does seem like a constant of New England hiking to pass the rescue team going to get someone with a sprained ankle though. Rocks and roots require a certain amount of ankle strength and flexibility. Washington, Mt Mansfield and Camel's hump are my 3 favorites among so many gems. Lots of view due to lots of time above the tree line.

Fire towers are usually a sign of short (though possibly steep) hikes with wide views. Because fire tower. The tallest mountains also don't usually have the best views, because of the visual flattening effect looking down. Slightly-shorter mountains have the bigger mountains nicely in view. Better photographs, generally.
