Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

It's not that my folks didn't care whether I got into a good college. They always encouraged me, including making it clear they'd find some way to pay for room and board, however difficult that would be for them. They scraped up the money to help me pay for application fees and travel when I applied to half a dozen graduate schools. But I really can't imagine them editing my entrance application essay, hiring someone to impersonate me during an interview, or bribing anyone to get me in. It would never have occurred to them to do my work for me, let alone bribe anyone for anything whatsoever, in any context. I'm beginning to realize how lucky I was.
If you can sue Remington for crimes committed by their product why can't you sue auto makers for crimes committed with cars?
And it is only a matter of time before Planned Parenthood is sued for ending a life that a biological dad wanted to be a part of. I know that very few judges would allow that court case to be heard. But precedent is precedent. And I would argue that Planned Parenthood is much more effective in killing than Remington has ever been in peacetime. PP has certainly benefited from it financially, too.

QUOTE: Brexit’s in trouble because Britain’s political class never wanted it Brexit's in trouble because the facile promises made by Brexiteers are impossible to implement. One economic problem is that UK is small compared to EU-UK (European Union minus United Kingdom). If the EU-UK decides that all widgets should be green, due to the size of the EU-UK market, manufacturers all over the world will convert to green widgets. UK may produce blue widgets, but not have a ready market or the scale of production to compete with green widgets. UK will have to convert to green widgets just to sell to EU-UK and quite possibly to compete in global markets. In other words, EU-UK will make economic decisions that affect UK, but UK will no longer have a say in those decisions. UK will be just another small country among many. Another economic problem is that UK's largest export is services, and it turns out that services means people. Currently people can move freely between UK and EU-UK. They just hop on rail or plane and set up shop in Italy or France, and start providing IT or financial or other services. The whole point of Brexit is to limit the movement of people across UK borders, so that will stifle the export of services. The primary political problem is Ireland, which is divided between the Republic of Ireland and UK Northern Ireland. Currently, because UK and the Republic are part of the EU, people and goods can move freely between them. With Brexit, there would be a hard border limiting the flow of people within Ireland. But an open border was essential in the peace agreement which ended the violent period of "troubles" in Ireland. Creating a hard border would renege on the peace agreement, and possibly lead to a return of sectarian violence. I think Roger Daltrey says it best, “As if we didn’t tour Europe before the f***ing EU.”
Is there any subject that you clowns don’t think you have all the answers to? Widgets, really? Blue and green even. "Problems", translated:
Them no stifle France make impossible possibly problem size. The to would set implement be possibly implement over With may If promises compared rail world part renege decides because small made border between EU export promises an violent Union UK set of sectarian will ready widgets financial words say largest across start people But blue would IT over promises limit possibly One. You're welcome. This is the greatest (GREATEST) batch of bafflegab that I have ever seen!
Dad prefers to call it we're happy to answer your questions, you're welcome which I guess is because there's such tremendous demand for such a service, offered freely, you're welcome.
Dad has yet to explain to me how that works or anything else, come to think of it. In any case, it must be some valuable stuff, all that problem-solving. You're welcome too, sure, notably. B. Hammer: I think Roger Daltrey says it best, “As if we didn’t tour Europe before the f***ing EU.”
Sure, but it is much easier to move a service crew from, say, Germany to Greece, than it is from a country outside the EU. The latter requires not just a passport, but work permits, and guarantees to conform to EU rules by the outside party. UK will still do business with EU-UK, but will be at a significant disadvantage in terms of access and cost. The other economic problem, about having to conform with EU standards to continue to do business with the EU, while having no say in those rules, is still applicable. The EU-UK is a much larger economic power than UK standing alone. Who do you think other countries will prefer in trade negotiations? Furthermore, the UK is at a disadvantage in negotiations because there is an impending date for departure. UK can't easily walk away from some sort of deal with the EU, any deal being better than no deal — and the EU knows this. That's why they wouldn't negotiate until UK made withdrawal official, setting the date putting the onus on UK. The economic problems will have to be weathered, but the political problem with Ireland remains intractable. Jim: There will always be an England. Sure. But UK? Not necessarily. "any deal being better than no deal "
Absolutely not. Any deal will work in the EU's favor and will harm Britain and British citizens. The best thing they could do is terminate it with prejudice. Ditto for most of their parliment. Zbot: The EU-UK is a much larger economic power than UK standing alone. Who do you think other countries will prefer in trade negotiations?
Notice how the prog always sees power as the ultimate goal. The idea that countries will buy British products simply on merit never occurs to them. The idea that self-governance is preferable to economic enslavement is a non-starter for them. For the prog, it's all about currying favor with the elites in power. It's all about who can play by the rules of the plutocracy. Be a good little vassal, hold your nose and eat whatever shit Brussels dishes out. We must have progress, above all. Anon: Absolutely not.
Agreed. We meant most any reasonable deal. Anon: Any deal will work in the EU's favor and will harm Britain and British citizens. That's not necessarily the case, but depends on the specifics. Anon: The best thing they could do is terminate it with prejudice. A hard Brexit is certainly a possibility. Without a deal, there is no protection for UK citizens living elsewhere in the EU. Without a deal, UK would be subject to non-EU member tariffs. Without a deal, there will be a hard border between the Republican of Ireland and UK Northern Ireland. As with global warming and presidential elections we can predict the future with almost 97% certainty.
Unless we're wrong of course. Then there's tap dancing. You're welcome. I like hard borders. I think all borders should be hard borders. You missed the most important thing about hard borders if there is a hard Brixit, and that is a hard border to stop the invasion of Britain from Africa and Asia via the EU.
Having said that I truly believe it is too little and too late. Unless they follow up the hard border with a massive and aggressive drive to deport Britain is toast (as is the rest of the EU). It's just a matter of time now. As a student of history I am intrigued with the simple question will each of these formerly European countries go to war to save their country? Not today or tomorrow but in a few years when the invaders begin to be more violent. I predict half of them won't. Belgium and Sweden are toast for sure. Germany may fight... not really sure. France will give up and all their women will be wearing burqas in 10 years. I think Italy will fight but they will all disagree on what should be done and while they fight amongst themselves the invaders will finish them off. Greece will disappear perhaps absorbed by Turkey Which by the way Turkey may be the big winner in all this. Bulgaria and Romania will fight but I think they will become part of the new Turkey too. Serbia will fight as will Bosnia and Croatia but I think they have lost too many of their fighters to win. Spain is a toss up, Austria too. Switzerland will become an island nation. It's gonna be messier than during WW II. Anon: I like hard borders.
UK has always had a great deal of immigration due to their history of empire. A hard border entails a significant economic prices, especially in a trading and banking nations, such as Britain. Nor have you address the Irish problem.

"UK has always had a great deal of immigration due to their history of empire."
True. Probably a mistake but at least over the years it was controlled immigration. "A hard border entails a significant economic prices" All borders have consequences but no borders have disastrous consequences. "Nor have you address the Irish problem." Ireland has a choice too. Half of that problem is a result of their choice. I am confident that if Ireland and England wanted to address it they could fix it. I am equally confident that they won't because it benefits someone politically to allow it to be a problem. THAT is where the guillotine should come into play.

Anon: All borders have consequences but no borders have disastrous consequences.
Much of UK's wealth is due to their extensive trading networks, including the export of financial and technology services. When UK leaves EU, they will lose the leverage the EU exerts in trade, and new deals will have to be put in place from a much weaker position. A hard border will have a significant impact on UK's economy. Anon: I am confident that if Ireland and England wanted to address it they could fix it. The Republic of Ireland is part of the EU, and there is strong majority support for continued participation in the EU. A hard border seems inevitable, but the Irish border is important for trade and for the Irish people who have relations on both sides of the border. The peace there was contingent on an open border. Reneging on this commitment could lead to political instability with possibly disastrous consequences.

Also, the MPs are stiffing their voters. This will not end well.
The primary political problem is not Ireland...it is the British elite that insist it be done their way...which likely is not done at all.
indyjonesouthere: The primary political problem is not Ireland...
Unless you're Irish. Courts ruling on the side of students accused of sexual assault. If the universities were not built on the foundations of rotting administrators that have more in common with banana republics than American jurisprudence they would not have the problems they are suffering today. Fake admissions, fake climate science, fake justice, fake grading, fake education...and we wonder why we have fake news on the networks permeated with borg journalists.
Zbot: UK will be just another small country among many.
And what is wrong with that? Zachriel's only utility is that he offers a glimpse into the workings of the progressive mind. It's kind of like getting to interview the Pillowcase Rapist 6 days a week to learn what makes this particular kind of psycopath tick. Notice how the Prog sneers at the idea of smaller government. Notice how the Prog is disgusted by the very notion that a people might desire to control their own destiny. The Prog thinks that allowing a conglomerate of foreign nations to dictate affairs is superior to self determination. The Prog prefers that an elite group of monied foreign interests should make decisions without allowing the people a vote. Or at the very least, allowing them to vote over and over until the "correct" decision is made. Progressives are a pathological mindset. A minority, they overcome through aggression, deception, and thinly veiled contempt for the masses they desire to control. Orwell nailed the emotionally deficient character perfectly. "We would love for you to make decisions for yourself. But what if you made the wrong decisions? Where would we be then?" Well put - you noticed the initial canard, the problem.
See, we need progress to solve problems, which because none of either are soundly or mutually or reasonably enumerated only starts out sounding vaguely logical, immediately to expose itself as a great, running fraud on reason, logic, truth, and ultimately life. Philosophical foundation? Human respect? Tolerance? None exist and therefore none can be itemized. It is an instinct, and an unbridled one at that, the phenomenon of sheer force. Saving humanity by force against its will, secproggs squandered the centuries of civilization to support it. There is no lie or deception too far when you're on that mission. Well put. Trump is not in Soros' pocket, so of course he has to be eliminated. I really pray that President Trump has forced Soros to show his Coup hand too soon. And this forced mistake will cause the destruction of the entire operation..soon.

I accept a lot of the blame for not liking it. I did not understand it at all. I watched it all and when it was done I knew nothing about it. I still am not sure what I saw. It was highly recommended to me by a man who grew up in rural Idaho in the 50's. He thought it was great. Other than that he was a perfectly normal man so I remain clueless to what he saw in it and what I missed.
If you never watched it you wouldn't have missed anything.
re Brexit’s in trouble because Britain’s political class never wanted it
Precisely. A long time ago I commented here that I would have to see the Brexit become reality to believe it would ever happen. This is the Ruling Class giving a giant middle finger to the Little People in the UK. It was to be expected. I fully suspect they will get away with it too. |
