Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: NYC educators pensions
I'm sure many counterarguments will be made that teachers deserve their high pay based on how hard they work and how important their jobs are - classic labor theory of value that had Medieval Scholastics arguing over the "just price" that free market capitalism should have put to rest with the idea that something is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. It's hardly "progressive" to revert to pre-Enlightenment ideas about the way the world works. "the State of Illegalia"
This is your future. Ever increasing taxes. More communicable diseases, increasing crime rates and less representation by your elected politicians. They are replacing you with more manageable voters. America as we knew it is ending. We will continue to decline until either Russia or China picks us off. Wake up America. Your party has turned communist on you. It will be China. It is already working hard on that goal.
Russia is a total red herring. They don't have the inclination or the resources. re: Harrison Ford,

Ford might at least want to consider walking the talk like Ed Begley, Jr. JJM: It's certainly hypocritical to take a private jet though.
While it's nice when people try to reduce their personal carbon footprints, ultimately, market forces will determine the amount of carbon emissions. Only concerted action will change that equation, as it did with air and water pollution. "Only concerted action will change that equation, as it did with air and water pollution."
If those who bloviate about climate change aren't prepared to take "concerted action" themselves, then they shouldn't be surprised that people ignore their (and your) posturing.

From a 2015 Daily Mail article on Ford....
'I'm so passionate about flying, I often fly up the coast for a cheeseburger,' he said in 2010." Yeah, that sounds like your basic environmentalist whackjob elitist.

It's hardly handwaving to point out that market forces will determine carbon emissions, absent concerted action.

It was directly relevant to the point about markets. People do what people do. Rich people do what rich people do. Greenhouse gas emissions are currently a tragedy of the commons.

In fact, ABBA has been active in cow fart reduction for years. It has been scientifically proven that cows eat less when forced to listen to "Mamma Mia" on an endless loop. (see Berthol, Larch et.al. 2019) Notably, Harrison Ford has not farted in 17 years in an effort to reduce his own carbon footprint.

Hank_M: That explains everything.
For a person of Ford's wealth, flying airplanes is much like driving a less expensive vehicle is for someone of lesser means. Market forces may not explain everything, but they are certainly relevant. People will continue to spend according to their means, but the actual cost to the environment, the externalities, have to be accounted for in those transactions. Otherwise, you have the tragedy of the commons.

Half a dozen foundational questions have been lodged with the Gasbot and gotten many eternal silences in reply. I myself have been gifted one bald-faced lie.
This then constitutes the playbook and the philosophical plank of the forgotten Chinese Sea data center-grade-like leftist troll community, from which it finds itself more than intellectually qualified to act like, well, a forgotten Chinese Sea data center-grade-like leftist troll. Probably running on decrepit Russian radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Or you could insert progressive and it'd read the same way. Because, you know, progressing like they are takes buckets of oozing moralistic claptrap without an ounce of meaning. Meaning is right out when re-engineering your neighbor's life against his will and against reason and right. You're on a holy quest after all; a sacred mission. Heads shall roll.

California to pull plug on billion-dollar bullet train, cites ballooning costs =
Sacramento Socialists finally run out of OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY! More like Governor Newsom realized that all the graft money had been sucked dry already by the previous administration.
Without another bond initiative to milk the citizenry again, there is not much political gain to be had from the current project. re the valentine picture.
Yep. That was me yesterday at the Wal-Mart. So I walk up to the rack and pick one. When I check out I am absolutely stunned to find it cost SEVEN FRIGGIN' DOLLARS!!!!! What a ripoff! I hope there is a special place in hell for the Valentine Day card profiteers. Grrrrrrrrrr . . . . Arghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! I mean, c'mon . . . I am buying a card in the friickin' Wal-Mart for crryng out loud, not Sak's.
Sheeesh . . . I cannot lie. I create my own on the computer and print them off myself.
Once the card business started getting up into the stratosphere in terms of price, it was an obvious solution. What a romantic, going to Walmart for a card. What, you were too cheap to buy your wife something luxurious, like a new blender? or a weed-whacker?
LOL
Ummmm. . . . . I got her a weed whacker for her birthday a few years ago. My wife once wanted a chainsaw for Christmas (true). I didn't get it for her:
1. It was too dangerous. 2. I wasn't sure what (or who) she might use it on. Aren't they interchangeable...I mean they roughly do the same job.
QUOTE: Is it time to change our thinking on fraternities? No need to take action, it's being changed for you. QUOTE: California to pull plug on billion-dollar bullet train, cites ballooning costs I'm looking forward to Coyote's Blog on this, whenever he gets ready. What I have read is that the Governor has scaled back the project instead of eliminating it. So apparently there is still money lying around to be squandered on lining the pockets of the Well-Connected Incapable. Compared to Venezuela, California still has plenty of juice. yep, they still want to build the segment connecting someplace nobody lives with the other place nobody goes. But spending money creates jobs, and that's good, right?
Dave Burge (Iowahawk) calculated that at present rates and volumes air travel between LA and SF can carry on for four thousand years on the cost to build rail between them.
Fortunately for CA residents, that's Iowa math. California is on the hook to repay the Feds for 3.5 billion if the current construction is not completed.
It is interesting that California use eminent domain to acquire land for their high speed rail but don't think it is right to use to acquire land to build the border wall.
Funny you mention the Hi Speed Rail in reference to The Wall.
Money spent so far: $4 billion Miles completed so far: 0 Estimated Budget so far: $77 billion Our Wall, in its current incomplete state has cost far less and yet has been utilized by far more customers! Harrison Ford ain't no Han Solo.
