Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

After reading about AOC's Green New Deal I can't get Donald Fagan's song IGY out of my head.
If you are looking for an earworm.... Not familiar with it. Why would I have the urge to look it up for a listen, though?
You can give it a whirl in a post, above!
If you would like. Pretty good music. The lyrics are abouy the International Geophysical Year (he ce "IGY"). IGY was a Kennedy era effort. "ELIZABETH WARREN MAY HAVE $10 MIL, WANTS TO TAX "SUPER-RICH" WHO HAVE $50 MIL"
In tax the rich schemes - rich is always defined as someone who makes about $100 more than the person who is proposing it. Make no mistake the effort to tax millionaires will trickle down to the middle class. The left wants your money and not only isn't there enough money taxing millionaires but also millionaires will do what is necessary to remove their wealth from the grasp of politicians. Taxes must be raised on the middle class and the left knows that they way to do that is with the bait and switch meme of tax millionaires.
PETA beclowns itself. Again.
Colorado is being Californicated. Virginia Dems: Hoist on their OWN petard!! Loose the lions, so that they may feed. Californian's have been moving, in massive numbers, to Colorado since the early 90's. Bringing all of the politics, that they ignorantly fled, with them. Liberals have the mentality of six year olds. They seem to be incapable of any rational thought. Not only is the new governor following California's lead on car emission standards, he is going to follow the green energy standard. All energy must come from renewable - windmills and solar. Just don't mention the N word - as it relates to energy production, not race. Colorado will run out of energy just like California. How many windmill does it take to build an electric car?
Boy the Occasional Cortex has sure had a meteoric rise from a bartender (with a degree in ECONOMICS!) to the darling of the media and left (but I repeat myself)!
I guess we can't really blame her for not really caring how we're going to pay for here Green New Deal since we've been running deficits for generations (save a couple of years in the '90s) and it hasn't hurt us so far. If you've read This Time It's Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly (I wouldn't blame you if you hadn't. I started it and got about a third through it. it's a heavy slog but even that third was very illuminating. It's a book economics majors should be required to read), you find that all of the huge financial disasters have their roots in debt. At some point, enough people say there is too much and stop buying the bonds. You also find that that point is not the same for every economy but about the time people start saying, "This time it's different" it's time to head for the hills. Cortex's GND will surely hasten that time for us (and then it's time to buy puts). But there's a silver lining - enough of the people who are generally reasonable yet for some reason have staunchly voted Demonrat will see that these people are just not serious and change their habit. It wouldn't take much - say 10%. Given the state of education in this country though, that is still a chance with substantial risk. Even if it should actually become law, there is still a silver lining. That annoying gasbag senator from Hawaii, Mazie Hirono, would have to stay in Hawaii till an electrically powered boat could bring her to the mainland. It will probably take more than twelve years to figure out how to build a boat that has enough solar panel acreage to power it for a reasonable distance. Bad news is that transit by sailing vessel would only be 30 days or so...
Bad news for whom? Thirty days without hearing from Ms. Hirono would be thirty days of heavenly bliss.
Part of her proposal is to gut, and or tear down, all existing buildings, and replace them with green buildings. These dingbats really have no idea about how things get manufactured. They certainly have no clue on how much petroleum is used in the manufacturing of just about every product. This is crazy on steroids!
How do you run cranes, bulldozers, concrete trucks, dump trucks, steel smelting plants, lathes, mills, etc. etc. ad infinitum on batteries, windmills and solar panels? How do you build batteries, windmills and solar panels without petroleum? One of my favorite memories of unrealistic progressive legislation was when the City and County of Honolulu was proposing requiring "undergrounding" of all overhead utility lines on the island of Oahu in order to make the island more attractive.
A representative of the electrical utility was testifying before the City Council: "As you know, as a public utility our costs of operation, including this project, would be passed on to all our customers according to their usage. To demonstrate the impact we have done the calculations for one of our largest customers. That customer is the City and County of Honolulu. We estimate that the City and County's proportionate share of the costs of undergrounding would be about $100 million in the first year." This was a few years ago when $100 million was real money. The bill was shelved not long after that. How did the US lose in VN...that's easy, they cut off all material support to the south Vietnamese while the north Vietnamese gained considerable material from china and the ussr. The treasonous bastards in congress stabbed the south in the back.
The US did not lose a single battle during the Vietnam War. The military engagements were incredibly lopsided, even moreso because of the operational constraints the US was forced to adhere to.
How did the US lose in VN. Excellent answer! If the US had bombed in 1965 like they did in 72 there would had been a different outcome. Never start a war without an absolute determination to win quickly and decisively .
