We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Whoopi Goldberg on the media smearing the Covington Catholic boys: "So many people admitted they made snap judgments before all these other facts came in. ... Why is that? Why do we keep making the same mistake?"
Joy Behar: "Because we’re desperate to get Trump out of office."
Why? Partly, because people's initial reactions to events and other people are the revelation of the state of their emotional hearts. They hate because that is their knee-jerk emotional reaction to points of stress, dislike, and disagreement. Usually there is a pattern of behavior no matter the circumstance. There is not much thinking, rational, logical, intentional that goes into much of the reactions to President Trump.
I think it's the most remarkable, and maybe also the most unremarked aspect of the Trump presidency. I think it's because he doesn't owe anybody anything. He has managed to attain the highest and most powerful political office in the land without owing any political favors to the Machine. It's unprecedented; the Machine does not recognize this condition and cannot process its implications. Trump has devalued the political currency and created an impregnable position, where the levers of power cannot be manipulated or influenced in the normal way. It cannot be allowed to continue existing. Maybe this is why only outrageous, seemingly desperate gambits are on display, every day.
That's a good analysis. Trump DOESN'T owe any favors, so they don't have any handles they can pull. They've tried all the usual ones - 'racist', 'sexist', nonstop media criticism by 'all the right people' - and he just ignores them.
How DARE he?! doesn't he know how the game's supposed to be played?! He's an R (nominally) so he should be shrinking and cringing from criticism, seeking ways to garner their approval! But... he just goes on like the MEDIA doesn't matter!
And honestly, they don't. Which a lot of people have come to realize, which only increases their fury more.
I don't understand why anybody watches "The View" much less quotes from it, but then I have the same feeling about CNN and MSNBC (for that matter any NBC station) and especially "Morning Joe."
On the other hand, maybe that makes sense and maybe in spite of our hopes and expectations of what kind of country we live in, we really live in a country where there are a significant number of people who believe those shows actually perform reasoned political dialog. A terribly scary thought. At least we got some honesty and accuracy from Joy Behar for a change.
Fifty percent of the country is beside itself because the other 50 percent voted for someone they loath. I wasn't happy with a number of actions Obama took, while in office, but I never came close to hating his supporters, simply for supporting him. And I never saw any of the hatred for even H Clinton that I've seen against Trump and his supporters (or those who don't "properly" loath him. That said, I think Lincoln (and I read this recently, so I can't take credit) saw the same type of loathing that Trump is enduring. So, it's not unprecedented.
Why? Because President Trump plays for the 'other team' the team that wants to stop progressive fundamental transformation and this desire is 'anti-democratic,' immoral and not legitimate. In other words we having nothing in common with our 'progressive' fellow citizens.
I agree, with a bit different slant. People have a primitive response to wanting to see their tribe rule. If some other tribe rules, there will be less food for them, fewer jobs, fewer mates, they fear. The objective evidence that "But Gerald, you've never been richer, better fed, more popular" is hazy and fuzzy to people. Red Hat. Different tribe. POWERLESSNESS. Must resist. The difficulty is that it's never enough. In the years that Democrats controlled the White House, both houses, and the courts, they were still paranoid and wild-eyed, needing to get 60 in the Senate, no conservative justices, etc. The endgame is the dictatorships where even 99% of the vote is considered too precarious.
