Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re the left vs Christians and Jews. If you are worried about the future of Christianity and Jewry it's time to give up NRO type "conservatives," Hugh Hewitt, Shapiro et al.
Help all our frozen feathery friends, put out some suet on cold days.
What a strange Guardian story about the indigenous Central Americans and the conquistadors. There are many contemporaneous accounts of the Spanish Conquest, far too numerous and particular and internally consistent to be disregarded, that have made it plain from the outset that the indigenous people sacrificed and ate their enemies regularly. They made no exception for the Spanish invaders.
It's also been clear from the earliest reports that Cortes's army contained a very small minority of Spanish soldiers. Although the Spanish enjoyed a huge advantage from their weapons, armor, and horses as well as from Cortes's own extraordinary military and general leadership abilities, the bulk of the army in every battle after the very first few skirmishes after landing was composed of indigenous allies who hated the domineering Aztecs. Cortes's army was nearly wiped out in the Night of Sorrows, when it escaped from Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) after Moctezuma was killed. They were exhausted, wounded, and starving. After neighboring allies took them in, they recuperated in the mountains for months, then gathered allies again and besieged Tenochtitlan. This time their conquest was successful and permanent, though only after a long and grueling campaign in which the residents of the city slowly starved and succumbed to epidemics. During the siege, the indigenous defenders routinely sacrificed and ate their captured enemies, sometimes in full view and hearing of their countrymen. The Spanish ultimately turned the tide by building ships to fight on the lake, a tribute to their superior technology and tactics, but they were outnumbered by their own allies at every point during the campaign. Their technology alone could not have done the job, even with the aid of disease. Cortes had a phenomenal ability to gather allies. When his deadly enemy the governor of Cuba sent a force to discipline him, he skillfully suborned most of them to come over to his side and join the Conquest under his leadership. Indigenous leaders who suspected what was going to come of all this tried in vain to get their comrades to resist Cortes's charisma, only to be executed for treason. A good read at American Greatness positing that the USA will never break apart from the culture war because the Left won't allow it to happen.
An excerpt: QUOTE: The Left Is Totalitarian By Nature Leftism is not simply one opinion among many. For the Left’s votaries, it’s closer to a religion. It’s not enough that one is himself a vegan, drives a Prius, doesn’t own guns, rejects the traditional family, or anything else that goes with the lifestyle. It is essential that everyone else does so. Any deviations are “backwardness” and “divisive” or worse. Leftism has evolved to to a point where it is totalitarian and intolerant. This is why the Left finds it unacceptable that a company—a type of private property—would refuse to provide contraceptives to its employees because of its owners’ religious views. This is why it matters to them that some obscure baker does not want to bake a cake. When their rigid and expansive notion of progress is at stake, all deviation is an affront, all other sources of authority, including religion, are secondary, and all people and institutions are enlisted to enforce uniform social standards. This is why “political correctness” is best understood not as some amusing or annoying novelty, but simply as applied leftism. But for the same reason they won’t relent against private businesses, private schools, small town bakers, and mischievous high school kids, there is little reason to think they would allow the resources, wealth, and people of the “red states” to leave peacefully. After all, if the departing group were seeking to build a country to preserve its traditional notions of government and culture, it would be a regressive force, undoubtedly labeled hateful and racist simply for wanting to keep things the way they are. For the Left, like the Puritans of Salem, it would be better if we burned at the stake. https://www.amgreatness.com/2019/01/21/the-left-wont-allow-a-peaceful-separation/ The Covington students were targeted that day because of their MAGA hats, because of their white skin and because they were male youths and would act exactly as they did. The black racist group was responsible for most of the racism and hatred but the native American racist quickly picked up on the camera opportunity and tried to create a physical confrontation. Thank god the kids were so easy going and laid back that they never even thought about pushing back against this racist attack. Had they acted to defend themselves from this threat it is likely that they would be facing criminal charges. It isn't safe to protect yourself from "protected" groups when they attack.
I was not surprised by the vitriol from the left, their knee jerks constantly and their hate for Trump and country is palpable. But the many attacks from neutral and right leaning pundits and organizations was despicable. This could have ended badly for those kids who were entirely innocent in this display of hatred. It may still end badly considering the death threats and the vast array of nutcases on the left. Wake up Democrats! Your party has turned communist on you. They hate the country, they hate borders and they hate you. NFL officiating is imperfect to be sure. Yes, the officials blew the pass interference call at the end of the game. However, in the first half, I felt the officiating was biased towards the Saints. I counted at least 3 face masks that should have gone against the Saints. Could those blown calls have changed the outcome game? Perhaps. I dislike instant replay. Sure it overturns bad calls, but the fact remains that the camera angles are such that usually it is not definitive what happened. As cheap, for the big money of professional sports, as cameras are, they should be placed so that every angle is reduced so as to get a clear view of what happened. RFD tags should be used, bring all technology in that would make the reviewed conclusion absolute. What kind of game would we have then? A game that is unwatchable because after every play, there would be a five minute timeout so that every camera could be reviewed for a blown call. No one would watch that. After all, it is just a game.
If you remember the infamous Packers-Seahawks replacement refs game of a few years ago (and as a Packers fan I'll never forget it), you'll remember that the NFL explicitly made the policy statement that a single bad call would never constitute the "manifest unfairness" that the rule in question envisioned.
That said, whether a receiver was hit before the ball arrives or whether a hit was helmet-to-helmet should be as amenable to a replay review as whether the ball carrier's knee was down before reaching the goal line (or line-to-gain) or whether a receiver maintained control all the way to the ground. That roughing the passer call was a spectacularly correct call based on a spectacularly bad rule, that penalizes any contact to the quarterbacks throwing arm or shoulder after the ball is released. Fans always say "That was the worst call I've ever seen," but that really was the worst call I've ever seen. He'd had another pass-interference non-call earlier as well.
New Orleans still could have won the game, with better play-calling and clock management. But fans will remember this one forever. I watched both of the playoff games Sunday and I saw bad calls against all teams not just one team.
As for that particular call of roughing the passer, I felt it was unnecessary, I did not see "roughing". BUT having said that the reason they have that rule is that teams target the quarterback with intent to injure him and take him out of the game. IMHO that is a terrible and unsportsman like conduct that is so bad I would prefer that when a team does this that they call the game and award it to the team whose quarterback is targeted. It won't happen because the game isn't about sportsmanship or fairness it is about billions for the teams and TV. Regarding replays; As long as the TV replays it I believe that the refs MUST review it. THAT is the problem because we see those egregious bad calls on TV and because of that the refs MUST see it too and be given a chance to change their call. "the reason they have that rule is that teams target the quarterback with intent to injure him and take him out of the game"
One team in particular is notorious for paying bonuses for this. Karma, perhaps? Covington
I hope everyone takes a step back and realizes how lucky those kids were that the unedited video was located and recovered. That tells the tale. It was a very close call. You can be sure without that video evidence those kids would be persecuted indefinitely and their town turned into Ferguson MO. The media would have scuttled any exculpatory evidence and vilified any eye witnesses who did not corroborate the narrative. I don't know the details of how the original video was recovered; I'd like to, if anyone comes across the story. Though he/she is a hero it is probably better to be anonymous; I would guess a whole lot of malicious people have zero interest in the truth and would have disappeared the video if they could have.
Additional information. As you probably know, there was a two hour video of the Lincoln Memorial hacktivist. The two hour video was shot by one of the Black Hebrew Israelites. This is what blew the first narrative out of the water.
https://www.thenewneo.com/2019/01/22/the-covington-incident-activism-and-how-to-provoke-and-shape-a-story/ Again, I point out how lucky those kids are. To quote NEO: "That was the video that proved Phillips was lying. And that was the video he never thought would exist. And if that longer video hadn’t existed, Phillips would have succeeded in the technique that Professor Jacobson has described, because no one would have believed the students against the word of this righteous Native American elderly guy." Bull. The American media love Jews and Muslims. Jews overwhelmingly fund and vote for far-Left Democrats. Muslims subvert Western norms better than even the Left. The press merely represents the secular, crypto-Marxist Left.
Christianity is hated by all those groups: press, Jews, and Muslims. They all want to live in societies created by Christians, but they also seem hell bent on subverting the very things that make Christian societies work so well. If you doubt Jews detest Christians, just read the Talmud. Only secular Jews, cultural Jews, and in Western countries. Much of the press - not all - hates Israel, and does not engage with religious thinkers of any type.
They like for you to be an nonobservant Jew, telling others what to do on the basis of your grandparents being actual religious people. The totalitarian meme continues to infiltrate every niche, crevice and hairline crack in our lives. We were watching a history of WWII on PBS as one of our youngsters has been studying that era. True to form, the narrative was "...the CONSERVATIVE Fascists supporting Franco against the progressive liberals backing DEMOCRACY..."!
Gimme a break. the only accurate way to describe the Spanish Civil War is as the Loathsome versus the Detestable. The fact that you're fighting against a bad guy doesn't make you a good guy.
Yes, the romanticizing over the International Brigades always seems to avoid the obvious: they were all communists, and not the touchy-feely, modern variety but the good old-fashioned hardline Stalinist Comintern kind.
Spain had the misfortune to be the victim of the two worst -isms of the 20th Century: fascism and communism. The latter has been thoroughly discredited (by the comprehensive destruction of Nazi Germany); the latter still skulks around in various forms, but remains odious. A pox on them all. Oops!
I meant the "former [fascism] has been thoroughly discredited (by the comprehensive destruction of Nazi Germany)". Mea culpa! The closing irony in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," a terrific movie and the first I ever saw Maggie Smith act in, was that one of the impressionable young students, who was killed after she was inspired by Smith's character to run off and join the war in Spain, got mixed up and fought on the "wrong" side. And I can't even remember for sure which side that was in the story--presumably the less fashionable Fascists.

Mary wants to join her brother, who she thinks is fighting in Spain for the fascists, but is actually fighting for the Republicans. Mary is killed shortly after crossing into Spain.

It was fascists (national socialists) vs communists (international socialists) much like the future battle for power in Germany which was between fascists (Nazis) and Antifa (communists). The shame is that they couldn't all lose.
jma: "...the CONSERVATIVE Fascists supporting Franco against the progressive liberals backing DEMOCRACY..."!
Conservatism reasonably describes Franco, who had strong support from conservatives in business and the Church. The Republicans were not universally liberal, however, but a disparate group of liberals, intellectuals, and leftist revolutionaries. Many scholars see the Spanish Civil War as the first battle in the fight against fascism in Europe. Much of the hatred I have been personally subjected to from the women's maoist revolution thugs stems from the fact that I am a straight white female happily married to a straight white male and have been married for a long time.
When DH was a department chair in the country's "most liberal" university he had a Lesbian office manager for many years. She was smart, efficient, gracious and perfect member of the team. Her female "partner" was given spousal benefits from the university. That is to say she was given money to study certain courses at outside universities. When I asked for the same "spousal benefits" the response was very loud, physical and clear--"NO DEALS FOR WOMEN LIKE YOU!" In other words no deals for "MARRIED HETEROSEXUAL FEMALES". Later after we had left the school some of the female managers chose to stalk us, illegally search our home, and blacklist my husband in an effort to get him to continue working for them (sheesh! the logic of that "shock and awe" strategy still amazes me). HOWEVER, the one who was targeted the hardest was ME--MARRIED FEMALE. We lived in a 6 unit condo building, five of those units were owned and occupied by single women. After we left that university the management women so ignited the fire of "women's revolution" in their little souls that we had to move out. These were women with whom we had a cordial neighborly relationship for 10 years. One day I came home and found that my front door was left ajar and my DH's desk was ransacked. When I asked the HOA president if she had had to use the master key to open my apartment for any reason (electrical, plumbing, etc.) Her response should stun even the most hardened MF'er: "I let some of the gals from the university in--they NEEDED to see what your husband was working on. YOU JUST HAVE TO SUPPORT SINGLE WOMEN". Make no mistake--the women's movement is the WOMEN"S MAOIST REVOLUTION and they CANNOT TOLERATE MARRIED WOMEN-- First they destroyed the education system, then they destroyed the Protestant church, and our system of ethics, then they destroyed the purpose of fact finding for the journalism profession, they are in the process of destroying our history. They only thing left for them to destroy and take complete control of the masses is our system of family. The family structure of one man one woman gives them the gags at every juncture of their revolution. I love the watch commercial guy who had the courage to stand up to the Gillette ad--it's going to take a lot more men like that to help save this country. There is no institution in this country that has not been converged by the SJW communists. The institutions are in the gutter and sinking deeper.
"Conquistadors sacrificed and eaten by Aztec-era people, archaeologists say"
Cultural diversity. Love mockingbirds! My state's state bird. Don't understand elites who disparage them because they have no distinct, original call. That's like disparaging a famous conductor because his orchestra plays other peoples music. I once listened to a mockingbird sing a five minute long beautiful song without ever repeating. Truly, "God saw everything that He had made, and it was very good."
Once, one winter, while I was living up in near Tusayan, Arizona (Sunset Zone 2), for as long as two weeks the evening sky was speckled with thousands and thousands of thrushes drifting onto the Pinyon And Juniper scrub like locusts.
I'd never seen anything like it. They were fleeing, I guessed, the continental cold mass descending from Colorado at the time. I never identified the species. Suffice it to say it resembled an American Robin, but slightly smaller, and not as vividly colored. But in ferocity and vigor it matched old Red Breast to the quill. One of the mob, a male thrush, drifted into a One-seed Juniper over my house and, judging by his territorial displays, I assumed he was building a home there. He nourished himself on the plant's sweet berries. And he settled in. His defense of his larder was ferocious for the next week. The drift of competitors continued to fall like shabby snow for days. And every intrusion he met with the desperate fury and rush of a soul living on the edge of death. Two days later the cold Arctic air licked the Devonian crumble north of Williams where Juniperus monosperma makes its home. It was minus-9 degrees Fahrenheit two nights in a row-you could smell Saskatchewan on the wind. And on the next morning I found little Richard the Third, frozen stiff and dead, at the base of his accidental stronghold. All the fret and fuss's for naught. The flight and fight and spree's for glee. The tale of the Winter Thrush is thus! Varied thrush? https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/varied_thrush
Could also have been a yearling robin-- some of the Rocky Mountain populations are surprisingly dull/pale. |
