Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I think Zack is one of the few who is crying that a mugger with a gun died in the act of committing his crime.
It is a shame that anyone died. But of the two, I think all reasonable people would pick him to be the one. Why did one have to die? He put a gun in the face of an innocent woman who happened to be legally carrying concealed. Lesson: don't rob people, especially with a gun. You might die. Dangerous Dan: I think Zack is one of the few who is crying that a mugger with a gun died in the act of committing his crime.
The woman had every right to defend herself. The mugger made the choices that led to his death. I am stunned we agree on something. For the record, the Zack I referenced was the one from the story, a social justice warrior to tweeted that she should have handed over her money and NOT shot him.
I also agree with Zachriel (at least this particular Zachriel) that the bad guy had what was coming to him. A question that might be more important is should everybody (criminals and mentally ill excepted) have that capability that the woman had.
Dangerous Dean: a social justice warrior to tweeted that she should have handed over her money and NOT shot him.
When someone uses a gun, you are at their mercy. If the opportunity arises to extricate yourself from the danger, of course you should do so, using the minimum force necessary. I do not advocate shooting someone when it's unnecessary, but that's a pretty complicated calculation when you're in the middle of a situation that could be life or death.

World council of churches
Despite frequent use of the term 'Jude-Christian', it is opportunistic sugar coating at best. It seems that a very large number of Christians have little solidarity with Jews. (I am neither Christian nor Jewish, watching this as an outsider) I disagree. I think that Christians mostly look at Jews and the Jewish religion as co-equals in many ways. There are some political and religious differences that some people who also happen to be Christian (or Jewish) choose to exploit. But that is a minority. I suspect that what we are seeing here is an effort to put a wedge in this long and strong "partnership" in beliefs and morals.
Christianity has almost nothing in common with Judaism.
"Judeo-Christian" was a 20th century psy-op invention to combat anti-semitic sentiment in America. Judaism has much more in common with Islam. Yet we never hear much about that "Judeo-Islamic" heritage. "Judaism has much more in common with Islam."
I completely disagree.. Judaism and Christianity share Biblical scriptures; the New Testament is grafted on the Jewish Bible. The theological difference (if you like) between Jews and Christians is over the question of the Messiah: to Jews he is yet to come, to Christians he has come. But no Christian disputes the authenticity and authority of the Jewish Bible - quite the opposite, it has been incorporated whole into the Christian Bible as the Old Testament. The Quran is another matter completely. It is not a further addition to the Bible (Jewish or Christian). If you are Muslim, you believe it to be the word of God directly revealed to Mohammed through the Angel Gabriel. It is neither a "companion volume" to the Bible nor a "new covenant" in the manner of the New Testament; it replaces the Bible entirely with a separate account free of previous "human error". All three religions profess believe in God. But where Christianity was built upon the foundation of Judaism, Islam was built by knocking that foundation down and rebuilding it in an entirely different way. Judaism and Islam are more similar religions. Dietary laws, circumcision, ritual slaughter of animals, similar burial customs - all rejected by Christianity.
Judaism and Islam are religions of works, whereas Christianity is a religion of unmerited grace. Salvation comes through substitutionary atonement rather than good works. Judaism and Islam share the concept of tikkun olam - the perfection of the world through their people. Christianity preaches utter depravity of humanity. Islam and Judaism are both religions of law. Christianity is based primarily on faith. Justification by law vs. justification by faith. In general, if an alien visited earth and investigated the three religions, the unmistakable conclusion would be that Islam and Judaism seem to be quite similar while Christianity is a vast departure from both.

Agreed. The kernel of Christianity is the relationship of the human mind to accountability as a path to awareness, hence to G-d. It is the purest concept the mind is capable of and thus of some enormous significance.
The sermon below our comments regards abstract or archaic elements, and has a mechanical, even psuedo-intellectual competitiveness to it, the most eyebrow-raising of which being that commandments exceed the doctrine of salvation by grace which somehow "lowers the status of Man in the cosmos". It has precisely the opposite effect.

Christianity takes the chassis of Jewish philosophy and morality and bolts on pagan tailfins and running boards.
Western democracy springs from Jewish ideas, developed by Christianity to their modern political conclusions. the big thress are: Engaged Monotheism + Man as child of God with free will + stable revealed morality ----------------------------------- Leading to: Transcendent individual human worth and freedom. + Fundamental equality (even brotherhood) of mankind + Personal responsibility. ------------------------------------ Leading to: Limitation of government's power over the individual. + Respect for individual person and property. ------------------------------------- The Jewish Bible kicks this project off by limiting slavery and eliminating concubinage, and by dividing power between sovereign, priest, and scholars/prophets. ----------------------------- The pagan influences that caused Christianity to break with the mother religion include: the Jesus story - a demigod-hero story obviously borrowed from tales of gods swooping down on nymphs, and a severe break with the incorporeal One of Jewish monotheism. A pantheon of patron saints (=minor deities) snuck into the Church through this same philosophical breach. + The replacement of most commandments with the doctrine of salvation by grace alone - which allowed Christianity to spread, but lowered the status of Man in the cosmos. + The addition of a realm of evil goverened by Satan - another pagan introduction that replaces Jewish monotheism with a binary system. It also reduces the status of Man and tends towards the pagan idea of a world governed by chaotic forces. -------------------------- BUT the Western world is based on Jewish teaching, expanded upon by Christians. The architecture in Washington is Roman by the Constitution is Jewish through and through. Nice screed.

[i]"Christianity takes the chassis of Jewish philosophy and morality and bolts on pagan tailfins and running boards."[/]
The bulk of jewish philosophy was not compiled until long after Jesus' resurrection. Talmudic Judaism is a mishmash of human ideas that bears little resemblance to the Hebrew worship of Yahweh in the bible. As far as Western Civ being based on Judaism....Greco-Roman Culture shaped Judaism, while Christianity reshaped Greco-Roman culture, and in doing so built Western Civilization.

The WCC is a churchian group that has little in common with Christianity and more in common with post Christian paganism. They are globalist in nature and function much like the dysfunctional UN.
I was raised Lutheran and am Baptist now, so I have covered the ends of the protestant spectrum. I have never heard ANY condemnation of Jews or modern Israel in any of the churches I have attended.
I have personally always seen Israel as the spiritual homeland of all Christians. Yes, some Christians are hostile to Jews, but if you are looking for the new Nazis the Muslim hotbeds are a far more likely place. The academics and administrators in denominations - those people at the seminaries and in the home office - are much more likely to have pro-Palestinian, "antizionist" views than the people in the pews, who are as you describe. This is because their religion is essentially liberalism in Christian costume, in contrast to the liberals you know in your congregation, who are more likely to be Christians in liberal costume. Reflecting on the type of person who goes into denominational seminaries and headquarters, as opposed to those who go into parish ministries and hands-on work, makes this clear in an instant.
Considering the two established orders that put Jesus to death - among the many other negative aspects of this issue to date - conflating Israel with Christian trajectories borders on unthought instinct.
If I'm remembering my pre-millennialist eschatology correctly, The belief is that when Jesus returns at the Second Coming, he will take his throne in Jerusalem, and the remnant of the Jewish people in Israel will finally accept him as the Messiah. It is thus mandatory that the Jewish peoples have a nation in Israel. Other denominations center on the end of the Trial before Pilate, where members of the crowd shouted "His blood be on our hands" in response to Pilates washing of his, thus the Jews are regarded of having cursed themselves with the Deicide.
R.I.P., Mr. Bogle. When I finally made enough weekly to spare few dollars, I opened a money market at Vanguard to accumulate the minimum for an index stock fund, which charged about 1% in fees. Peter Lynch's Fidelity Fund, one of the most popular at that time, was charging 9.5%.
While Lynch wrote some enlightening books and articles about investing, no way the average guy on the street benefited 8.5% more from investing in his fund. Mr. Bogle brought investing education into mainstream America, especially the fact that the Big Boyz govern the ups and downs of the market, so slow, steady and diversified is the best road for the Little Guy. A License To Hate
VDH gives examples of those on the Left dehumanizing Trump supporters. He does not invoke Godwin but it is very similar to the way the Nazis dehumanized Poles and Jews. And we all know what happened to them. What does all this hate speech signify? . . . we are learning that the entire idea of political correctness was never much about universal ideas of tolerance of the other, or insistence that language and protocols must not stigmatize individuals by lumping them into stereotyped and dehumanized collective groups. What we are witnessing, instead, is that it is fine to demonize millions, from their appearance to their purported hygiene and smell to affinities with feces and apes—if it serves political or cultural agendas. In sum, cultural progressivism is about raw power, not principle. https://www.hoover.org/research/license-hate-0 "... a woman defending herself from an armed male mugger is, it turns out, terribly problematic." Zach, who thinks this is terrible, was not the one accosted by the gunman. I'm sure Zach would have given him all his money, and likely all his credit cards as well. And be proud of himself for doing so.
Trump's Burger Banquet: OOOOOHHHHHHHH, he makes the Dems so MAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDD. Brexit: Ms. May is NO Maggie Thatcher. No, our Zach did fine on this. Credit where credit is due. Read above.
I had to read it several times to let it sink in that he and I agreed on SOMETHING so basic
When the Mueller investigation ends, the investigation of Mueller will begin. And it appears he is as dirty as they come.
So probably the Mueller investigation will not end any time soon. Right on. When Mueller's investigation ends then the deep state players wind up in jail. The investigation will not end. The threat of obstruction of justice is launched at anyone that even remotely trespasses on any part or parcel of Mueller's wandering eye. None of the other appointed investigators can investigate anything until Mueller is gone. He will not go...he is there to protect the deep state Obama regime. Rosenstein is part of the Mueller protection racket.
REMINDER: twin studies conclusively, repeatedly indicated little to no genetic/biological causation for homosexuality. The "born that way" slogan is a myth.
